He should focus on making sure he is getting all he can out of his current speakers rather than starting from scratch with new speakers. He needs a better receiver with a seperate amp to make sure that happens.
Decide on which bells and whistles you have to have then pick the receiver that fits those needs, just make sure it has preouts for a seperate amp.
My priority is and always will be music, so I couldn't care less about the latest & greatest hdmi this that and the other hookup. My prepro doesn't have them but it sounds great with music & does just fine with the hookups it does have for my connections.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
Cathy you forgot to say he needs 200 watts per channel.

A little bit more thatn you wanted to spend BUT it an awesome AVR. I have the below Adcom it it ran a full LSi set-up without breaking a sweat.
It has all the inputs and power you would need.

I am still waffling on the SC, it is a great price, but I might want to do a SC-55 for the new amp section to see how it works with my Mythos setup and use my current SC-35 as a pre for upstairs. If you are interested, I would snatch that puppy up before I make up my mind.

I have found something else that throws a wrench in the machine...
That area above the mantle is only about 16.5" deep which means that any of the nicer recievers would hang 2 inches or more over the mantle.. this will not do so I am going to have to figure out some kind of cabinet or something.Pioneer SC-25 | Adcom GFA-555 | KEF q900 Front | KEF q600 Center | Polk Monitor 30 Rear | Polk CS2 Rear Surround | Polk DSWPRO 660wi sub -

Agreed but in the OPs range XT32 isn't possible. XT is"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -

That is what they want you to think that is happening but your really taking 2 steps back. When you have them hooked up your not given the towers any more power, because the towers have been divided up in to 2 seperate ciruits. One for the mids, and highs, and the other one for the bass.
So on paper your sending 75w to the mids, and tweeter, and 75w to the woofers, not 150w to the whole speaker. When you run extra channels your drop the power rating per channel because your now driving more channels. Your Onkyo is rated at 75 watts per channel with only 2 channels driven. When your powering a 5 channel system the actual power drops, then when powering a 7 channel system it falls of even harder. The newer Onkyo's (TX-NRxx9's) hold their power ratings much better, and dont really fall off near as bad as the older ones.AVR: Onkyo Tx-NR808

Ok... I am super excited!! Found a local Pioneer SC-25 that I am picking up on Saturday...
Since I am going to have to move the reciever location due to its depth, what gauge (or any oter specs like material) speaker wire would you all recomend? I was thinking of doing 12 gauge with naner clipsPioneer SC-25 | Adcom GFA-555 | KEF q900 Front | KEF q600 Center | Polk Monitor 30 Rear | Polk CS2 Rear Surround | Polk DSWPRO 660wi sub -
