There's many factors that come in to play. Music, HT, room size. ID or DIY is very popular right now. the JTR
Capivator and Submersive is very popular for Home Theater. TC Sound subs are great for a nice DIY project.

Deftech just released a new line of subs, Super Cube 2000, 4000, & 6000. Forward firing, with 2 passives on either side, remote controlled, with an LED read out in the upper left corner. The wattage ranges are 650, 1200, 1500.
Here's a vid from DT on the 6000 and 4000's

Trend is Stealth. Basically getting away from in room subs and going in wall , in ceiling , in floor. Using 2 or more subs in a system is ideal. 2 seems to get the job done in most cases.
I really like the in wall designs. Years ago they where ok at best but now they perform like free standing woofers and take no room. cake and eat it is applied here.

Companies like James , Paradigm , Def Tech , Velodyne all make incredible versions. Worth checking out.

I'd say the trend towards tiny subs -- Velodyne, Mirage, Def Tech -- is increasing. Most are single real woofer, dual passive woofer designs with mad amounts of power driving the tiny speakers, trying to get as much bass as possible out of a tiny cube. Sounds from them are very impressive -- tight, clean, powerful... they just get stopped by physics from producing ultra low frequencies... Def Tech claims 14Hz from their Supercube 6000 (9" woofer), but reviews routinely debunk the claims Def Tech makes on their subs. Good speakers, but their PR departments lie like crazy.

I haven't heard one of the tiny subs yet that has solid bass below ~30Hz, though I haven't heard a 6000 yet.

The other trend is towards wireless modules to make it easier to put subs anywhere in the room. Similar to the tiny cube trend -- manufacturers are looking for ways to help take as much bass as possible and hide it from view.

No mention of the MicroPro's here? Design is nice, small even. Gobs of power on spec sheet. Are these no good?

Argh! My bad. Polk Micropros, too, of course. I haven't listened to a MicroPro yet, and they slipped my mind. The smaller two models would definitely fit into the "less is more" trend. The others, while larger than I was originally thinking (1 cubic foot, max), are still following the same basic ideology -- cramming as much sound as possible into as small a space as possible, and the larger Micropros definitely get lower than the 30Hz spec I originally mentioned. I think Polk specs the -3db on the Micropro 4000 as 21Hz; I haven't seen independent verification of that number, but with a 12" driver I could believe it is possible.

I think dual MP4k's would look sick sitting next to my A9's but gosh are they ever expensive. No one in Canada sells them either it seems. At least, not in the central part here.

Was running dual MP4k with my A9's up until a year or so ago and loved them. If WAF is an issue these are the subs to own if you can get them at a discount. In the $1500 range there's a ton of excellent subs to choose from but might be on the bigger side if going ID.

What did you cross them at?

Honestly, it's size that's the issue. I can't work with 15" design subs due to width constraints. The MP4K is about as wide as I'd like to go. I can't fit anything bigger really so the design and output outlined appealed to me but the price is way out of my league for now. This is why I stuck to a dual 12" setup of some kind.

I can;t stand using my Velodyne's because they just don't blend well at all. Do NOT like the sound they output with my A9's. But boy did they sound nice with the old Bose setup I had. That should speak for itself...

    Thanks leroy.

    Crossed them at 80hz.

If size is an issue also look into the TC Sounds LMS 12. It'll takes a smaller sealed enclosure and it's badass.

I just recently acquired Hsu VTF-3 MK4. Very versatile sub with 12 inch woofer. Loud enough to make you wonder if you're really in a movie. Haven't tried enough music to know if I like it or not, but my spouse is very impressed. Not bad for less than $800, including shipping :-)

I know the A9's will play low that's why I asked. I assume they could be crossed/blended at 50hz. Would love to hear a dual pair on my setup. Maybe someday. Many options to consider and it will be a while before I can take that plunge. Still trying to sell my Velo's...

I was looking at the TC Sounds 12" Epic drivers for a sealed design. So many options. I have no idea what route I want to go when its time.

The wife was tour guide at Gardner Cave while in college (Zag) I have built a couple canoe access only camp sites at NoName and Half Moon (chainsaws and weed whacker camp sites- borderline need a building permit lol). Another at Browns but you can walk into it. We are looking at some retirement property on the north side of Metaline Falls towards Lake Sullivan. If I had to guess at a number I would say better than 250 nights camping and trout fishing the lakes around Kings Lake road.

There's a little store there right next to the bridge. I remember before they remodeled it and had the second set of pumps. I love Spokane. We lived there for 5 years or so and have good friends there.

True but not me. I want the biggest sub possible that will move as much air as possible. I want to feel the 1st octave of bass, 16hz - 32hz when it is in the music/movie.

    Whats the trend ?

I guess some would have you putting subwoofers in every corner, under the couch, in the walls, behind the toilet, and out in the garage. Some like that boom boom you hear in the cars rockin' down your street at 2 am. But, if real bass is your game, if musical bass is your thing, one sub of good quality should suffice. Rel is a favorite among music listeners, and for budget minded folks, HSU has some decent offerings.
