Yeah, ice is a killer that's for sure. Some of our shrubs and trees don't look very happy right now:sad:

Yep, ice storm can be a real killer!
    January 5-10, 1998Location:
Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, Canada

Size of the Ice Storm of 1998:

?The water equivalent of freezing rain, ice pellets and a little snow was double previous major ice storms.

?The area covered was massive, extending from Kitchener, Ontario through Quebec to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and also covering parts of New York and New England.
?Most freezing rain lasts for a few hours. In the ice storm of 1998, there were more than 80 hours of freezing rain, nearly double the annual average.

Casualties and Damage from the Ice Storm of 1998:

?28 people died, many from hypothermia,

    ?945 people were injured.

?Over 4 million people in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick lost power.

?About 600,000 people had to leave their homes.

?130 power transmission towers were destroyed and more than 30,000 utility poles fell.

?Millions of trees fell, and more continued to break and fall for the rest of the winter.

?Estimated cost of the ice storm was $5,410,184,000.

?By June 1998, about 600,000 insurance claims totalling more than $1 billion were filed.

Summary of Ice Storm of 1998:

?Freezing rain started on Monday, January 5, 1998 as Canadians were starting back to work after the Christmas holidays.

?The storm coated everything in glassy ice, making all forms of transportation treacherous.

?As the storm continued, layers of ice built up, weighing down power lines and poles, and causing massive power outages.

?At the height of the ice storm, 57 communities in Ontario and 200 in Quebec declared a disaster. More than 3 million people were without power in Quebec and 1.5 million in Eastern Ontario. About 100,000 people went into shelters.

?By Thursday, January 8, the military was brought in to help clear debris, provide medical assistance, evacuate residents, and canvass door-to-door to make sure people were safe. They also worked to restore power.?Power was restored in most urban areas in a matter of days, but many rural communities suffered for much longer. Three weeks after the beginning of the storm, there were still 700,000 people without power.?Farmers were especially hard hit. Nearly a quarter of Canada's dairy cows, a third of the crop land in Quebec and a quarter in Ontario were in the affected areas.?Milk processing plants were shut, and about 10 million litres of milk had to be dumped.

?Much of the sugar bush used by Quebec maple syrup producers was permanently destroyed. It was estimated that it would take 30 to 40 years before syrup production could return to normal.

Luckily I lost power to my home only for the last few days during the last week of this tragic event. Luckily my wife's mom place was not affected so she was safe and wife and kids were securely moved to her place during that last week. Luckily my business work shop was not affected did a few days of camping at work hiding the foam mattresses during the business hours. No damage to my home as I secured it while in-habited and monitored daily. The outdoor was a total ice mess but fortunately a good samaritan neighbour used is plowing equipment to clear up the mess on many of the properties. My only loss was my front yard huge spruce three which I took down in the summer as many of the huge branches that broke under the ice weigth made the three and property look so hugly.

Many pictures in this link http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2007/10/ice-storms.html looks like art today but surely not so much at the time of occurence.

I remember that storm. We were in an apartment in central Maine, my daughter only a few months old, and we lost power for three days--some of my colleagues were without power for over a week and were living in their offices. Fortunately the pipes did not freeze and burst and we were able to go up to the college where I teach to use water and get a little heat. They had back up generators--reserve power in their power plant.

Nasty, nasty, nasty. Sheets of ice upon ice!

Wow, after the previous posts about the storms in Canada ours here in Washington pale in comparison. But, as mentioned before, folks here just aren't use to nor ready for stuff like this. Especially driving in it, that's why I was glad my courier stuff was canceled as I was not looking forward to going out there with folks that don't have any idea of how to drive in this stuff.

The pic is of our bird house's out front which our cat Chloe closely monitors to make sure that all of her birdy friends get lots and lots of seed:mrgreen: We have been throwing handfulls of seed on top of the snow as we can't get to the feeders since all our shoes are tennis and our only shovel, a dustpan, broke.

Your pic looks close to what's the past few days have been here the past few days. For us this is normal occurence on a few occasion during our winters. Nothing to declare emergency status but definitely a pain. The larger streets, boulevards, main streets are cleared and pretty safe but smaller streets are a mess, slippery and icy. Matter of fact, my van wouldn't turn at all at 2 street corners during my today's commute. One of them got me worried as the vehicule kept going straight with the wheeels all the way to the right and I saw the front end of a buss quite closely. The second one I was expecting it  so I kept the wheels straight until a dead stop and I could hear and feel the ABS working big time. I almost went by the intersection... While it's a mess, I have to admit threes look beautifull when there icy like that.

3 above -14 windchill and that west coast storm is pusing our way spose to reach here in Iowa by morning 6-8 inches of the white stuff on the way. Old Man winter has been around for a few days he just got off to a late start here in the upper midwest, and decided to rear his ugly head or whatever that saying is.

I took these after the first snowfall (First of the season and first storm) on November 16, 2005. Took me 3 1/2 hours to get home from work which was a 50 min drive mostly highway outside the city. A small convoy of us were travelling together on the highway. We'd come across someone stuck, free them and keep on going down the highway...that you couldn't see in front of you.

It snowed once in Miami, and never in Key West. Yesterday was 79, today 71.

It would be kind of nice to simply toss a few brews outside to get nice and cold. At 71 like today we southern cold pansies are drinking hot toddies and starting outside fire pits.
