Vintage Monitors always did play above their price point. Now on the used market some 20 years later, there isn't a better sounding speaker going in it's price range and several hundered dollars above.

I will probably never get rid of my 5B's.

Now add RD0's and some decent caps in the crossover and prepare to be WOW'ed again.

I love my 5Jr+ Series 2 (Piano Black), they were my first pair of Polks. I just recently loaned them to a friend of mine who has them hooked up to a Marantz 2238B. I helped her set it up and they sound great with the Marantz. I told her she can have them as long as she wants, as I have upgraded to 7C's & SDA II's, but that if she ever moves outta state or decides to get new speaker she'll give them back. Congrats on your 5jr+'s!!!!!

I would not consider them small.
These are pretty good size speakers.
I have the 5's (with SL2000) that are few inches larger than the 5Jr's and have amazing sound.
Currently using them as my surrounds in HT and I like the bright tweeters. They bring surround sounds like broken glasses, winds, explosions etc... very nicely.
On smoothing out the tweeters, I read somewhere that covering tweeters with fabric helps. You can try with different fabrics and see what works best.

The problem you have with adding fabrics, foam, attenution is it radically alters other frequencies outside the natural 5dB spike at about 13kHZ. SO you end up causing a different issue trying to fix the original issue.

There really isn't a fix that doesn't create other issues. Except getting the silk domed RD0 tweeters.

FIGURED AS MUCH! I downloaded the schematic and there isn't much to them ( compaired to the rta's ) might be a good learning exp. Moding them. Got to look close to the xovers as to disasembly. Cap's can't be too much. What would u recomend reguarding cap's? The rdo are a given I guess. I have them in my rta 12c's and like them a lot. I can switch them into the Jr's and see or hear the diff. Right away befor i buy but I think your right. With a little dynamat thrown in these might get stupid good, they are surprising just stock.

I used Clarity Cap PX for the high pass and Solen for the low pass and Mills resistors. I also splurged and bought a set of Larry's rings and tweeter brackets. And of course the RD0 tweets.

When you call Polk to order the RD0's be sure to tell them you're a member here. With the discount they are really not that bad price wise. I put a pair into my 5B's, used Clarity Cap PX caps and Mills resistors and love the sound.

Are you sure your 5jr+'s have SL2000's? Mine came from Polk with SL2500's.

EDIT: I just checked the schematics in the Vintage Speaker section and found mine are technically "5jr+s" where that "s" must mean it has SL2500's from the factory.

I guess we are creating a problem trying to show 5jr+ speakers in the plural form with an apostrophe s ('s). There is a 5jr+ with SL2000's and a 5jr+s with SL2500's.

Just noticing that the only difference from 5jr+ to 5jr+s is a 13.5uf cap for the SL2500 instead of a 12uf cap for the SL2000.

What is the RDO replacement for the SL2500 ???

    Just found this: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?121702-Differences-between-SL2000-and-SL2500&highlight=SL2500+replacement

If you decide to replace tweeters, and also decide to replace caps (caps are old and should probably be replaced either way) you can buy 13.5uf caps and "move up" to the RDO198-1. (Also remove and jumper the polyswitches).

You'll pay the same approx $50 each for the tweeters whether you go 194 or 198, and the bigger cap would only cost a couple bucks more than the 12uf.

For about $130 you can move those speakers to the top-shelf.

Inspired, have you priced caps lately? I was a little surprised when I was pricing out some caps and resistors for my newly aquired RT25i's (Dayton and Clarity). Almost $60 for pretty much the same values as in my 5B's. Although the RT25i's have an extra resistor so that's about $9 extra right there.

Well, you could have some 5As with a Peerless! I agree with Brock. What a value 5s are! In the collection permanently. In fact, I find myself listening to these more and more as time passes and there are a LOT of other "vintage" speakers in my room!

    Go for the RD's!

I haven't replaced the SL2500's (yet), but finished the caps, resistors and Dynamat Extreme today (this thread finally got me off of my butt to complete this "rainy day" project ). I also have TFLF rings and new BRGM gaskets for a future upgrade.

I upgraded the left crossover about 5 months ago to contrast and compare the sound in stages. The 13.5uf Sonicaps and 1 ohm Mills Resistors were purchase 14 months ago from Sonic Craft during one of their sales for not much over $30, but I see they are a bit higher now.

Don't forget, you can resell the removed SL2000's or SL2500's (depending upon your exact model) and recoup some value to defray the cost of the mods.

The improvement to the left speaker was noticeable and worth it. As you can imagine, the right speaker just completed today sounds like a fingernails on a chalkboard.
