Help with sub selection

I recently received a hand down system from my father minus a subwoofer and surrounds. The setup is as follows denon avr 391, monitor 40s for the fronts and a cs1 for the center.

I am going to buy a sub and surround in steps with the sub being the first purchase. This will mainly be used for HT and occasional music. My room is 14x16. I have listened to the psw10 and psw110. I liked the psw110 but would like some input on what to get.

I think I have narrowed it down to the psw110, psw 125 and dsw440. Which one do you guys think will fit best with the setup and room size I have.

Thanks,

Stew

What's your budget? There are a lot of Internet direct companies that will offer some big bang for your dollar when it comes to subs. Welcome to CP.

I would like to stay around $300 or less. I saw the dsw 440 om polks eBay site refurbished for $269 which seems like a good deal.

    I'd look at these - http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-1.html - http://outlawaudio.com/products/m8.html

Just a few options, if you can stretch your budget a bit I'd look at the STF-2 from HSU. Stay away from the psw10, or look for a psw505. I think the 110 would be alright as well. Good luck, a sub purchase can be a difficult one.

Just reread your post, if your doing mostly ht, the psw505 may be a very good option.

I second the PSW 505 to round off your polk HT system

also, instead of buying surrounds, I would pickup Monitor 70's for the fronts and move your 40's to the rear.

I've listened to a few subs in my day and I must admit that I really like Velodyne subs. They're impactful and powerful and I tend to like the ported sound. I'd recommend you take a serious look at this 10" variant:

http://velodyne.com/shop/subwoofers/dls-3750r.html (Currently on promo for $299; new)

It offers quite a few features for the money, including DSP, remote control and a 375 watt dynamic amp.

Your other option is to buy used and get a better product, but possibly with markings / scratches and no warranty.

Thanks for all the input. I have certainly considered moving the 40's to the rear and getting some floor standing speakers. Only thing is I will have to convince the future wife (currently engaged, getting married in march) that speakers are a necessary part of a mans movie watching experience.

Well, all I can say to that is "good luck!"
there are two major obstructions in the audio/video hobby: money and wives.

You could do like I did and just buy 7 or 8 sets before she realizes whats happened, then she'll be thanking you when you sell them off and go down to on 5 speakers :D

I'd go for the sub now and do a 3.1 system, good luck with the future wife!

Great idea. She is a RN at one of the local hospitals and works nights, so I think my plan will be after we move in together to just set everything up one night when she is at work and when she gets home in the morning she will be too tired to even notice that I have added some "furniture" to the living room. Eventually she will notice and I will have to think of something else.

Newegg.com has them go on sale often and even at regular price they are decent.

New Egg sells the DSW Pro660WI for $349 free shipping on their weekend sales. It is a really good sub for the money.

Are you trying to get the best sub you can with in your budget or trying to skate by on as little as possible?

I have the 660 and it's not all that.

I recommend following this puppy for a few weeks. It goes on sale for 299

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882780078

it was available to hear at my best buy. Even though it was just hitting in the store and not in a closed room, it sounded so much crispier than my 660. I blame it on the ported enclosure. Ever since I tested ported subs in my car I've disliked them, and this one is no exception.

I'd go with a nice quality 10 inch. Velodyne is certainly a good brand. 12inch seems like overkill for your m40s setup.
