brand new out of box- loud "hum" or "buzz" coming through sub

Just bought a PSW110- connected it to a Yamaha receiver (rxv571) via a monaural pin (LFE in). As soon as I plug it in it starts making loud buzzing sounds. The sound gets louder when you touch/move the LFE pin on either side.

Is there some setting that I haven't properly set? or is this thing just blown before I even get to use it? Thanks in advance-

Wade

oh yeah- I've got the volume at about 50% and Low Pass set to LFE. I have to turn volume down all the way OR set the Low pass all the way down for it to go away.

    Hello,
Thanks for posting on the forum. Is there any humming when the sub-cable is removed? Also, what kind of connecting cable are you using? Shielded coaxial? Speaker wire?

No hum at all when the cable is removed.

I'm using a long (about 12 foot) simple RCA cable (you know, the red, white, and yellow ones- but of course, just using the red one).

There are lots of other cables in the area as well that it comes in contact with, including speaker cables and coax. for cable TV.

I have it plugged into a power strip coming from wall.

In all likelihood the humming can be attributed to the RCA cable being close to an AC source. Maybe the back of the TV or other electrical device. The "red, white and yellow" cable usually are not shielded and whenever there is a fairly strong AC nearby humming can result.
Try moving the cable away from anything that is carrying electricity and see if the humming can be reduced. Or, go to a sub-cable that is better shielded.

I had humming in my subs as well, try changing the RCA cable to a shielded RCA cable and it should definately help your problem. I picked up a nice set of Monster RCA's and they were beautifully.

If you are using Cable for TV and have the cablebox or TV hooked up to your system you could be getting a ground loop. Is your sub plugged into the same receptacle as the rest of your gear?

Also, make sure all of your components are on the same circuit. This will help with ground loop noise.

The OP first step should definitely be to acquire the appropriate shielded cable for the LFE signal. You do not have to pay an arm or leg for a decent LFE cable, just check Blue jeans cables or even Monoprice.

What happens if you try a different cable?
