My LG tromm died, possible BEARING cause. May DIY but too much hassle so in the market of purchasing a good build one there. Guys got any 2cents?

Miele is a good brand out there per my research but I have to sell my liver for that...:frown:

Typical brands out there right now will only last ~5yrish unlike our POLKsystem :)

I've been with my washing machine for 8 years....she even feeds me!....HEYO!
    If she died, i'd be sad...then i'd hit the Wendy's drive-thru

I'm in the same market and am just looking at the usual culprits Whirlpool (Amana/Whirlpool/Maytag) & GE although i've read that Maytag is having some troubles with their units.
Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!!

doggie, I bought LG Tromm in 2004, bought 5 years extended warranty, and died this year (after 7 years). The bearing is designed to go out after 5 years under normal to heavy usage. It will started shredding the plastic outer ring and you will noticed that. In fact, most washers will do that, I think it is due to design. We bought another LG Tromm, knowing that it will be another 6-7 years before we have to buy another one, sort of fact of life that no washers will last beyond that.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Is this short life span just on the front loaders? we bought out Maytag washer and dryer in 1989. Had to replace dryer after 16 years, but the washer is still churning away.

I've been looking at washers and dryers too.

I've been reading up on this one from Maytag with it's associated dryer and looking for reviews:

    http://www.hhgregg.com/maytag-3-5-cu-ft-washer/item/MHWE250XL

    Dryer:
    http://www.hhgregg.com/maytag-6-7-cu-ft-gas-dryer/item/MGDE250XL

They seem to be fairly new so the reviews aren't very numerous. But I haven't seen anything very disparaging at all.

Then again, I might not be looking in the right spots.

But hhgregg had the best prices and they did say they'd price match a sale price too. But they had this pair on sale on Black Friday for about $900 for the pair and limited to in-store stock only. I didn't go and get it 'cause I wasn't dealing with that BS. But I was tempted.

From my online research, and talking to friends, it appears that way with the front loading. We got young kids in the house so the washer gone through its spinning twice a week regularly, if not more.

Head straight to Sears Outlet & pick up the cheapest they have on the floor. No need to spend a lot of $$$$ on them. All those bells & whistles are nothing but BS. My last purchase was a Kenmore washer (12/04 for $266.00) & a Kenmore dryer (12/04 for $285.00). Nothing fancy but still going strong after all these years. I'll be damned if I'll drop some serious coin on a washer & dryer.

Yeah but if you're looking for high capacity, you ain't gettin' anything for sub $300 like that.

Those Maytags I posted, I'm looking at because they are massive and the same size as the laundromat machines. I can probably get a commercial sized machine set for like $2600 that will last me until I die. But I can't afford that.

However, unlike companies like LG and Samsung, Maytag actually has a commercial division so they know how to build a commercial sized machine. So service and parts are available. Alot of people I know with the LG units are complaining that parts are expensive and hard to find.

Take a look at Speedqueen. They just re-entered the consumer market due to the downfall of Maytag. I just picked up one of their dryers. They are using the commercial technology and build, and while they may only have 80% of the features of other brands, they are built like the proverbial tank.

Yeah, I was looking at them too.

Expensive though. The washer/dryer set runs about $2K for the pair and there aren't any incentives like you see on the consumer brands.

But Speedqueen is 100% USA Made and they are in every laundromat out there.

Jstas - the local appliance store in IL had some nice discounts on the Speedqueen washers and dryers. I paid right at $629 for the gas dryer, which seemed competitive based on other brands I was looking at. It's probably the smoothest and quitest running gas dryer I've owned, and the air throughput is really high. No worries about clogged dryer vents with that unit!

It's probably no longer the case for the brand, but we have a Sears "Lady Kenmore Ultra Fabric Care" 82791100 that we purchased in 1987 that is still going strong.

I believe I might have replaced the timer, but am not sure I'm not thinking of the matching dryer (86692100)purchased the same day and still going strong with only a roller or two replaced. I am sure that only 1 timer between the 2 appliances was replaced about 10 years ago. But as for everything else; original.

Almost 25 years out that pair (doing laundry for SIX of us since 1994 with lots of extra sports uniform loads and king and queen size bedding) and still going strong.

I will check Sears out first when these finally bite the dust!

Who says you need kids for high capacity?

I have a queen sized bed and no time to go to laundromats to wash comforters and fleece blankets for it. I also have furniture with washable cushion covers. They don't fit in my current washer from 1987 and barely in my dryer from 1994. But what's the point if I have to wash them somewhere else?

I do laundry once a week right now because the old units capacities are low. If I have a high capacity washer/dryer I have enough clothes between work and casual to be able to do laundry once every two weeks. Plus, I'd only have to do one load vs 3 or 4 right now.

That Maytag would more than double my current capacity.

So I would most definitely use a high capacity washer and dryer. In the long run, with a gas dryer, my electric bill and water bill would drop significantly because the larger machine does more work with less resources.

Don't get all Internetty "lol, OMG! your an idiot!" attitude on me. You should know by now my response to such things is not very good.

Yeah, others are telling me they got crazy deals on them too. But I only have two shops, both mom and pop deals, that carry Speedqueen. That makes it hard to strike a bargain when they are the only game in town. Right now, last i saw the washer was $1099 and the dryer was $1299 for the gas model and $1199 for the electric. I'd love to get a Speedqueen set. But I can't bargain for a price when right now, I'm low of cash due to medical bills. So i gotta wait until I'm ready to buy to have any kind of bargaining chip.

I have a Lady Kenmore dryer from the early '90's. It'll be 20 years old next year and it still works, it's just electric and it costs a fortune. I know when I'm on vacation 'cause I can let laundry slide a few days and my weekly electric bill drops 20% when I'm not running the dryer. My washer is a MagicChef from 1987 and the steel box that hides all the guts is actually rusting from the floor up. I'm afraid it's going to break one of these days and like flood my basement.

A quick DIY, well not really quick but easier than the other cost effective option, replace the tub bearing ~$200ish
A cost effective fix, replace the bearing from the tub bearing housing, labor intensive.

    ~ cost $300ish

Might jump on the new buying bandwagon... i think.

Not quite liking the front load coz I'll rather have my white clothes soaked w/ bleach overnight after a washed. Unsure if front load has this feature since they're all energy efficient designed.

if anyone buys a front loader, make sure you leave the door open after use so the water inside can dry out. Otherwise, you are going to have a major issue with mold buildup. You also have to run a self cleaning mode once a month as well (no load, with bleach as directed if any).

Ok-3th machine in 14 months. Samsung front-7 days, basic top loader from sears,
filled with water-died on 1st load, got a high end elite model from sears- made
it 13 months. No power, it's going to take a week for sears to show up.
Good thing i got extended warranty. I don't think any of them are long term.
Last machine was 12 years old and worked fine-wife just wanted to update.
Big mistake. None of them are going to last and are going to cost $$$.

There are a lot of small rehab places around that sell old rebuilt machines.
I almost went that route. Either way, Sears is footing the bill on this repair.
It's just sad that over $3k in a washer/dryer pair doesn't mean it's going to last.

Got this combo for the wife the other day she picked it out I was hesitant about a front loader but so far so good the steam option with the dryer is pretty slick hope it lasts a long time for what it costs. I could of bought some LSIM's instesd but that would not of gone over well.
