Burn in

We all need to live together in a house for a month. Then we can actually compare what we hear as we all hear it together!!
Reality show!!
Lol. That would make a very boring show for some and a very entertaining show for some others.
All kidding aside I do feel that I need to hear some other systems. The one in my house is the only one I have heard and I would love to hear some others so that I could compare.SDA2BTL

Where are you located?
Also, what's your source? This harshness isn't what anybody has experienced with their SDA mods.
About resistors, I'm using .47ohm Mundorfs and they're perfect! -

I am in TN.
My gear is:
Adcom GFA-555; New caps on the PCB
Adcom GFP-565; All new Elna Silmic II caps
Marantz CD5004
Blue Jean Cable LC-1 cables
Belden 10awg speaker cable with banana plugs
That harshness is not there with all recordings but some frequencies drive the tweeters nuts. Does anyone have John Hiatt: The Open Road. That cd is one of the problems. Brother says his sounds good on his system. Steely Dan Aja give some harshness. High pitched voice and piano does it most times.
Hey I am just waiting until the burn-in is closer and then we will talk about it. I don't think I need to get alarmed until that is completed.SDA2BTL

Again, I had another set of caps in there that had around 200 hours on them. Changed to the new caps, same harshness. I did not notice that harshness until I had installed the .5 Mills with the old cap setup replacing a jumper I had installed to replace the poly switch.
I'll say it again, that defies logic, if nothing else.My gear is:

You may very well be experiencing the discovery of other weak links in your system now that your speakers are capable of revealing them. It's the curse of climbing the ladder. I've found Adcom gear a bit grainy on the top end, YMMV. Your cable selection is also suspect.Political Correctness'.........defined

F1 is dead on here, the more you improve/upgrade the more weak links will shine in your system. I have tried many pieces of Adcom gear and the best gear they have is the GFA 5802- GFP-750 ,and the GCD-750. I like the GFP-715 but I hate tone controls on the plus side it has a phono input, but the 715 would be leaps and bounds over the 565.
IMO the first thing in your rig I would upgrade is the pre-amp then cables, that would be a great start.Polk Audio SDA 2.3tl Fully Hot Rodded. 😎

Would not disagree that I could be finding weak links in my system. That very well could be the thing. I have a friend who has a very good system across town that I am going to visit soon. Maybe we can interchange some gear and see whats what.
Which cable selection is suspect?SDA2BTL

I would like to upgrade sometime early next year to a tube preamp. Any opinions on that or is that a trick question? :biggrin:SDA2BTL

It's hard to beat the Dared SL2000A for the money but the Belles 21A is great if you can find one as well as the Dodd ELP is a great start but hard to find as well. Just keep in mind you will have a cost in upgrading tubes as well. I have over $500 in tubes just for the Dared alone..Polk Audio SDA 2.3tl Fully Hot Rodded. 😎

Ok. Thanks.
We better get back to burn in. I have been able to sit down tonight and listen to the speakers again closely. I have to say they are sounding very good. I am about 24 hours out from the 200 mark and I am seeing large improvements. I do not believe that there is any doubt that burn-in is real. I hear it. The Dire Straits, Brothers In Arms is on now and the highs are smoothing out. Burn Sonicaps burn.SDA2BTL

That's a solid plan.Which cable selection is suspect?

I have not heard the Dared, but the Belles 21A is very very good. That is a solid recommendation from Larry. Also, Larry is correct about tubes and the money required for them to put into tubed gear. I have spent over $800.00 in tubes (in the past week and a half) for my DAC to swap them out and hear the differences to try to find the "right one". Luckily I am getting close.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion."
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Ok I am right about the 200hr mark on the caps. I have listened to them for the whole 200hrs. (no turn on and let play for a week at low level etc).
Anyway it seems that it is like watching your child grow. You dont really notice it because you see them everyday. Since I have been listening to them along the way I really cant say that I can tell any marked difference from like day 2 or 3 to now. I noticed a difference from brand new to about 10hrs but that is about it. Unfortunately my mind wont allow me to "remember" what they sounded like when new.
Anyway I am very happy with the sound but I cant say that I am really hearing this burn in phenomenon.I got static in my head

Thats because it's a gradual thing. I'll bet if you had a new one and burned in one right next to each other it would be more apparent.HT SYSTEM-
