I see what the op meant though. It would seem that there is an element to hifi shops pushing a stereotype that you must be into jazz or classical to be a true enjoyer of high end audio which is not the case.
Having never been to every high-end shop I can't say whether that is true or not. I suspect they cater to their average customer based on their demographic research. Even if that demographic research is a gut feeling based on people who bought gear in the past. As others have said, most likely they will play whatever you bring to the shop. Most businesses try to cater to their customer since it helps in making a sale.
Personally, I feel that whining about the music playing in a high-end store is more of an inferiority complex than a real issue.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

I've never been to one either, I was just going on the assumption that it was true.
With life experience a lot of inferiority complex disappears. Call it what you want, I have been told many times that I am Brutally honest at best. I have quite a bit of family members with a tremendous amount of money and I really don't care for the "I'm better than you" persona. I have a harsh sense of humor from my military background. The particular HI-Fi shop I'm basing my comment on is in Portland,Oregon. Typically people in that part of the country are very judgmental, and seemingly angry. I am from the northwest I should know. Truly any store is a business, but when you go to a place and they decide weather or not they want to take you seriously based on how you dress or whatever it may be is ridiculous. This store really did give off the vibe im talking about, but at the end of the day they are there to make money. -

I think I saw you at Best Buy last time I was there BlueFox!
Its ALL about the music!
Why waste it on something you don't personally like?

I listen to almost anything. At the time of getting into better sound I was transitioning from country into heavy/death metal and rock. I used to go through phases. You would be surprised at some of the classical out there. Some of it has more raw energy than metal. Big band is another one that can really get you into grovin'. You just have to listen. If you want to demo music one place you can go is beemp3.com. It's mp3 so it's not going to have the highest resolution, but you can at least get a good feel for different types of music before you go out and buy. There is nothing wrong with the music you listen to, I listen to it also. What most are saying is it just does not have that much dynamics to it. A lot of the younger generations confuse loud with dynamic which most stuff from around the mid '90s to present are, loud. There is no room for a big change, it just all loud.

Coming from key west where everyone looks the same, for the most part unpretentious I can feel the snot vibe when in south beach but I still enjoy both locations. In south beach people dress to be seen, in key west it doesn't matter. You can be as flaunting as a drag queen or as mundane as you can be and you won't get sized up and down. Here you can do what you want, look however you want and listen to whatever you want without worrying about what people think.
I agree with Pepster, it's about the music.Polk Audio SDA CRS+ crossover 4.1TL by Trey/VR3 (Rings and custom stand by Larry)-Polk Audio SDA SRS2 crossovers by Trey/VR3Parasound HCA1500aYamaha rxa-3070 with musicast-Celestion SL6S presence,- sl9 surround backNHTsuper1's surroundMagnepan SMGParasound 1500pre- Sofia "Baby" tube amp - Monitor Audio Silver RX2 Marantz 2230/B&Kst140Technics 1200mk2 Gamertag: IslandBerserker I am but a infinitesimally small point meeting the line of infinity in the SDA universe
