I am with you. The Barracuda's series circa 2005 was bulletproof, not since then. I have one 1TB circa 2008 that was replaced (under warranty) and exhibited same issue. And it gets very hot. Samsung and WD are now my workhorses.

...IN CASE anyone did NOT read the attached link in original post. THERE is a SHORTAGE due to the FLOODS in Taiwan. Taiwan produces about 60% (don't quote me) of all hard drives. Bummer on monopolies. Interesting on how even the used market has pounced on the price increases.

..Why is it so much $$$ for ole IDE drives??? Supply and demand???

The flooding is in Thailand, not Taiwan.

Wow, talk about a price hike. I have a Spinpoint and WD Caviar Black in my rig. The Spinpoint was 79.99 and the WD was around 90.00 , they are now twice that price range. That's insane. Perfect time to go SSD.

Not if you want 2tb of storage! I ordered the cheap Seagate, but I'm probably never going to have the feeling of trust with it. I'll still be using a 750gb WD Black for my primary drive and any important information.

    Seagate 2tb drive, today only - $99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148681&Tpk=N82E16822148681

Keeping in mind I don't usually recommend Seagate anymore, I'm actually thinking about buying one, as my current 1.5tb array is full. But I'm also considering waiting until the WD drives become available again.... HMMMM

I'm with you both as far as Seagate is concerned. I used to recommend them exclusively, whilst specifically recommending against WD. However, it seems the tables have turned - Seagates QC has gone downhill, while WD's QC has gone up considerably. I now recommend avoiding Seagate, and buying WD.

I've also had good luck with Hitachi, however, looking at reviews it seems to be a mixed bag. It seems that if you get a drive the works, it will last forever; but, there do seem to be an inordinate number of DOA's with them. Thankfully, all my Hitachi drives have arrived in working condition (5x 2TB and 5x 1TB).

Ive been using Western Digital since 2001 and Ive yet to have a problem. Havent really had a problem with a Seagate either so Id have no problem buying one especially if theyre $80 for a 1TB while WD is at $150.

Best Buy sometimes has some 1TB Seagate Barracudas for $70-80 but they go out of stock quick.

Ah, I was wanting to do a new build but I really should wait til Intel's new line of procs comes out in April anyway. Guess this is a good excuse no to upgrade just yet. Not sure if Ill heed it or not cause I have severe, chronic upgraditus and am just dying to slap a new motherboard at least in my rig.

I know what you mean, man. I'm trying to curb my upgraditus by getting this drive... but my last "small" upgrade (a new video card) only lasted me a month before I started getting the itch again. Unfortunately, the heating season is upon those of us in PA (though you wouldn't have known it today...), and ~$250/mo gas bills are fast approaching. Maybe in the spring... If my poor, old Athlon64 lasts that long.

I concurr... Seagate drives have gone down the tubes... I only buy Western Digitals right now... Regarding Hitachi, they no longer make drives, I think they sold their business to Seagate. If you get a Hitachi that works, good, but I have had a couple that were DOA.

I wasn't aware of that until now. However, a quick Google search tells me that it is actually WD who is buying Hitachi's storage division. In addition, Seagate is in the process of acquiring Samsung's HDD division. I'm not happy about this since it will stifle competition, which only serves to hurt the consumer. If these two purchases go through, there will only be three HDD manufacturers out there: WD, Seagate and Toshiba.

And yeah, my 10 Hitachi drives work fine, thanks.

Toshiba drives are and will always be garbage.

However, just to stir the pot a little. I was one of the first 5 people locally to acquire the new 500GB Momentus XT drive when Seagate launched them last year. It's been running strong with daily use on a MacBook Pro over the last year and a half. :)

Nuts... my drive didn't get delivered today. Two boxes, both coming from the same Newegg warehouse, following the same paths on the same days. The one with my hard drive in it got left at the depot this morning :(

On the other hand, I've had a few Toshiba 2.5" drives, and not had any problems with them. In fact, I have a Toshiba 500GB 2.5" drive in an external case right now that still works fine. This just goes to show how much individual experiences with products can differ, and why the experiences of a single person doesn't really mean all that much in the scheme of things. That's why you need reviews and experiences from a large group of people to be statistically relevant.

    Good to hear.

Arrgh, I hate when that happens! I remember about 6 years ago, my docking station and laptop were both sent the same day via the same service, yet the docking station arrived a day earlier. I remember thinking to myself: what the hell good is the docking station without the laptop?!

UPS likes an extra day to kick around the boxes with HD's in them.
