Yes I did notice. A drive I've been looking at that was 114 at amazon a month ago is at about 150 now. And newegg is having fewer discounted sales on drives as well. They used to have them every week.

I haven't been in the market for a hard drive recently, but went grocery shopping with my wife for the first time in a while today.

Food prices are waaaaaay up, so it makes sense everything else is (or will soon be) up also.

Seagate and western digital are built in Taiwan, with the horrific flooding has caused the shortage and price increase.

Thursday night, at our local Wal-Mart people were throwing punches over TV's and Paula Dean Cookware.
At least 3 fights in our local store, I didn't go but I ask a cashier the next day.

I sure hope we're not fighting over toilet paper like they did in Japan when they had a shortage years ago.

Yes, as the dollar gets weaker gold goes up. Takes more dollars to buy gold cause it's weaker.
That's why it's good fight for junk from China as the economy goes to hell.

No, it's a shortage due to flooding. Not only have prices gone up, but Newegg has been limiting the purchase of all drives to one each for over a month now, so they don't run out. A real pain when you need to build several computers. Things are supposed to return to normal in March or April.

There was a sign up at fry's saying drive shortages were because of Flooding.
Just buy one of those cheap USB external Black Friday dives and pull it out of the enclosure.

I buy exclusively Western Digital, and the prices have all but doubled over the last month or so. As stated before, it's because of the Thailand flooding. External drives are cheaper than internal, but are usually restricted by lower spindle speeds and reduced cache.

I got lucky as hell. My PC had the OS drive crash, so I decided it was an appropriate time for a rebuild. Decided to go with a RAID setup, and picked up (2) 500 gig WD Black drives for $49.99 on the egg. Literally a week later, they were $149, limit 1. Whew!

Now I'm waiting for them to come back to reality so I can pick one up for an external enclosure for the Dish receiver. Oh well, as long as my PC is up and running the rest can wait.

Thankfully I do not need to purchase any drives right now or I would be screwed. As sucks2beme mentioned, I noticed those signs in Fry's when I was there as well. Of course, with a B&M store there are easy ways around it. Go in, buy one, walk out and deposit in car, go in, buy another one, ad infinitum. The employees don't care enough to watch for that.

Yep and its bad too. Theyre saying its going to be well into next year before stock is back to something resembling normal. In the meantime prices are going to continue to be pretty high. On the plus side, if youre building a new rig, you might as well go with a SSD now that they cost about the same price as a 7200 RPM hard drive.

Hmmm, this actually has me thinking. I was considering purchasing myself a new laptop for Christmas, however, I'm wondering if this will affect prices. I suppose most large manufacturers would already have a good stock of HDD's, but I don't know. If it does affect the price, I wonder if they will let me order it without a drive since I'd be moving my SSD over to the new laptop anyway. Plus, I have spare 2.5" HDD's.

    Oh Christ.

    No.

Between the massive flooding in Southeast Asia and the nuke disasters in Japan, 2/3rds of the world's manufacturers in both hard drives and semi-conductors are not operational. You can expect prices to go up more on hard drives, memory, flash drives and even cellphones as well because demand is quickly out stripping supply.

Are the price inceases due to flooding in Thailand? I wasn't sure.

No, it's due to the U.S. Dollar not being worth the paper it's printed on.

It's all tied to downloaders and their "virtual" files, theft and money in their war on CD sales.

Wrong answer. Dig a bomb shelter, fill it full of canned food and water.
Then buy lots of goats. Why goats? I don't know, but all the stylin'
nut jobs are doing it, so it must be good, right?
I bet they leave the factories down until the end of next year.
$150 per drive sounds a lot better than making a whole bunch just for $49.
Welcome to the new game plan.

I think that you can substitute sheep for goats. Colbert gave the details on this a while back. Skip to 4:30 in the following video for the scoop.

    Seagate 2tb drive, today only - $99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148681&Tpk=N82E16822148681

Keeping in mind I don't usually recommend Seagate anymore, I'm actually thinking about buying one, as my current 1.5tb array is full. But I'm also considering waiting until the WD drives become available again.... HMMMM

I am with you. The Barracuda's series circa 2005 was bulletproof, not since then. I have one 1TB circa 2008 that was replaced (under warranty) and exhibited same issue. And it gets very hot. Samsung and WD are now my workhorses.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.
