2.3 Modification

Hey folks.
After a rather long "what would happen if I" tought process I went ahead and did it.
Due to the placement of the 2.3's not being the best acostical place to have my system, I took the "donut" driver, 6513, out in the hopes of increasing bass. I replaced them with the SDA 6511, the same as the other two SDA drivers in the array had . The reason I was told that Polk put the "donuts" in them was because they had too much midrange. Due to the driver having a weight on it it would produce less bass IMO.
After several hours of listening I am very pleased with the results. I don't think they are too strong in the mid's at all. As for the bass, it is hitting much harder and seems alot more linear. As for the increased mid's, well, I like the sound. IMO it sounds fuller and more spacial.
After all the 2.3 TL's don't have the "donuts".
I know that others have thoughy about doing this but I would like to hear if anyone has actually gone through with it and what there thoughts-reviews were after the swap was done.
Cheers,
Tony

Why did you use the mw6511 and not the mw6510's that the TL use? was there any reason for that?Absolute corruption empowers absolutely.

The array that has the 4 vertical speakers use the 6511 and the 6513's.
That is true. The TL's use all 6510. -
Very cool, Vette! I grew up with this model and still have them in storage ( room size does not permit me to use them ). I would like to try this just to see what it would sound like.

Mine use 6510 and 6513 for the array and the 6511's for the stereo drivers which is why I asked sense you are mixing 11's and 10's in the 4 driver array now.Absolute corruption empowers absolutely.

Now you have me thinking about using all 6510's Chandler. Oh well. I am happy with this mod. Best of all it's not permanent.
Doro said a while ago that he had a frequence chart with all of the 65XX's fequences. I would love to see this chart. Heck we have just about every spec on the SDA's except for that. -
Tony I think your good to go on using MW-6511's in place of the MW-6513's. If you look at the schematic for the 2.3's you'll see that originally Polk listed 2 MW-6510's for dimensional and 2 MW-6511's for Sub Bass but crossed out the MW-6511's and replaced them with MW-6513's. Now if your right about MW-6513's being the same as MW-6511's but with a doughnut your most likely good to go. One way to be sure is to measure the resistance of the MW-6513 if it's around 3.13 Ohms (Same as a MW-6511) your good and if this is the case you most certainly do not want to use MW-6510's as they measure 6.57 Ohms.“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” ~ Mark Twain

I will do that gimpod. Good looking out....Good info....

So I take it that the 6510's are 8 ohm and the 11'skid and 13'sI are 4 ohms then. That would make sense then thanks for that bit.Absolute corruption empowers absolutely.
