How do you store your cables?

So like most of us, I have a ridiculous number of cables that aren't in use. I won't get rid of any of them , ya know, just in case. So I normally store them in a big rubbermaid bin, but if I need one specific cable I end up making such a mess of it that the cables won't even fit back in the box. I was thinking of getting some way to hang them instead, like a tie rack. What do you guys do?

Pricey Cables and IC's are in their original plastic bags in their original boxes. Run of the mill stuff is draped over an old-school type gently curved hose holder nailed high on a wall in my shop.

I keep them in an old Sony Hi-Fi VCR box so they don't get dusty. Maybe 20 assorted rca, HDMI, optical, etc.

Apparently I have too many cables. My rubbermaid is actually filled. Maybe another rubbermaid so I can at least divide stuff...

Really good stuff in their original boxes/bags.

Less good stuff in tupperware bins, but the key is that they're rubber-banded in pairs or individually so there are no tangles.

I use my old cables like gun locks. Just thread them through the trigger guard and solder. That way I am not tempted to shoot myself when I find out the new cables I paid a buttload of money for are not any better than the old ones I have. Has not happened yet but I try and think ahead.

I have a rubbermaid as well in the basement.... however it's for the crap cables I don't need but don't want to throw out. My good spares are in the spare bedroom in a dresser drawer somewhat organized and close to the loft. Very easy to get to.

I weed thru my cables and goody box every year.

You should seriously sort thru them and keep what you need on a minimum level, as you're sure to accumulate more over the next year. Designate one box for cables. I would keep only what has original everything or is application specific. Don't get sentimental when it comes to cables.

Alex, if you sold all that stuff, you'd have some money to raise the bar and buy better cables.

Never been too crazy about keeping the cables in original boxes. I have dedicated canvas type bags (various pockets) and some are stacked in the proper entertainment unit. To avoid cables from damages and being tangled I use velcro straps on the better cables. Cables are loosely (no stress, pressure, kincks) coiled and then "velcro wrapped". I also favor "velcro wrapping" to "tie wrapping" when ever possible as it allows for ease of moving around without any potential cable damage.
