Let's see, your outside at the park with kids and you video them. Unknowing to you someone is playing a FM station of a game and/or of music. You upload your video to FB. Now you and FB have committed a crime. You go to jail and fight in the courts and FB is shut down and goes to the courts.

Last time I checked, a bill has to pass BOTH the House and the Senate. Since the House already shot down their own version, coupled with the WH threatening a VETO, I'd say this is a non-issue.

Granted, they could pass PIPA on the sly, seeing as it is less known, but, I doubt that'll happen.

I agree, but I think it would be better to send a clear unequivacable message that both of these bills are unacceptable.

    This should be interesting:

Wikipedia to black out Wednesday in protest
    The Associated Press
    From Associated Press
    January 16, 2012 5:13 PM EST
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales says the online encyclopedia will black out its website Wednesday to protest anti-piracy legislation under consideration in Congress.

Wales announced the move on Twitter Monday. The popular online community-sourced information site will shut down its English versions for 24 hours in protest of the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect Intellectual Property Act pending in Congress.

The legislation is designed to crack down on sales of pirated U.S. products overseas. Critics say it could hurt the technology industry and infringes on free-speech rights.

Wikipedia is not the first website to announce plans to shut down but is the most well-known, with an estimated 25 million visitors a day. Reddit, Boing Boing and other online sites also have plans to go dark.

What's the issue? Uncle Sam can't seem to stop anything else, what makes them think
that they will any real effect on the internet other than a PITA for normal run of the mill users.
The real pirates will do just fine before and after this goes into action.

Cathy, glad to see you bent out of shape over this, doesn't happen too often.

The free flow of information is not condusive to an entity that wishes to control a population. If you think back, look up history, you'll find all the tyranical regimes first order of buisness was to control the press, control the flow of information. The internet is somewhat of a last man standing. They already control a good portion of the press, control what your kids are taught in school, it's only logical for them to want to control what the grown ups see and hear.

Would it be safe to say that those controlling the money also controll the policy makeing ? If so, and in light of the recent quick organizeing of the OWS, Tea Party, the middle east upriseings, the anger against bailouts of banks, why would a policy to control the flow of information come as a surprise to anyone ?

I use to be one of those people who would say " Not here...not in this country ", but I was proven wrong. Once you break it all done and understand how things work, it comes down to money, regardless of what the constitution says. The whole IRS rule book has been bought and payed for....which is why it needs to go.

Don't you guys ever wonder how some nice guy/lady from your state works hard, gathers donations to run for office, has a average net worth, wins a seat in the house or senate.....and by the time they leave they are worth tens of millions of dollars on a 175 grand salary ? I know we all passed 5th grade math here, so I'll leave it at that.

Well, at least we can read these bills prior to passing (or not passing!) them

Some of the issues these bills attempt to resolve are real, and we have to figure out how to solve them without undue government control. The loss of control and potential tax revenue the internet represents to those who make it their career to "govern" is like having a Christmas present you're not allowed to open. Stricter governmental control, regulation, and taxation of the internet is going to come at some point, hopefully these bills become mere first attempts and not actual laws.

So all this talk about the internetfreedom, not one mention that uncle Sam can now jail
people without trial for as long as they want. The National Defense Authorization Act
that just got signed into law includes American citizens. Sorry, I don't care if
they are flaming crazies with a bomb. They go to trial. Sooner or later someone
will expand the scope of the original bill to include anyone they want.
The US was based on this crap NEVER being allowed. Yet there it is.

Good links there Mike in post#50. With everything else going on, the pieces to the puzzle are comming together. You won't see it on the mainstream news outlets or the 5 o'clock news. People think your nuts when you tell them about this stuff but it's real. Also when things like this won't stand up to scrutiny in the light of day, it gets buried into some other 2000 page piece of legislation that nobody will read.

    Absolutely.....great video.

Whats interesting is that it fits the pattern, create the crisis then provide the solution.

SOPA isn't dead. Some dude on a judiciary committee announced the other day that he was going to reintroduce the bill when they reached a consensus. So basically, after he can schmooze some dudes and get them back over to his side, he'll reintroduce.

But the White House has already promised to veto the bill if it passes.

Do you think that would still hold true if they were to be re-elected ? It is an election year after all and lame duck presidents have nothing to lose.

This kind of stuff never goes away, it always comes back in a different shape or form under a new catchy name. There is always an opposite position to everything no matter the importance to gain money from lobbyist. Create the crisis, provide the solution, they get richer, you get poorer. Never ends.

Different animal entirely. There he had to chose between funding the military and the requested amendment. There's no real loss for him if no action happens on SOPA/PIPA.

It's also of note that the amendment he requested was voted on and failed prior to the bill passing:
    https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=112&session=1&vote=00210

A "Yea" vote there is a vote AGAINST detention of American citizens and much more clear cut than the overall vote (again, fund the military or fight over this for months...) So if you're still pissed about the NDAA, those "Nay's" are your list of senators to send nasty letters to.

Wikipedia and Craigslist have begun their blackout, with the option to enter your zip code for your local Representative contact list. I started a thread this morning about it but didn't realize you already had this one going. Today is the day to use the zip code option to get your representative's attention.

    Got this email today:

    "Hi everyone!

A big hurrah to you!!!!! We’ve won for now -- SOPA and PIPA were dropped by Congress today -- the votes we’ve been scrambling to mobilize against have been cancelled.

The largest online protest in history has fundamentally changed the game. You were heard.

On January 18th, 13 million of us took the time to tell Congress to protect free speech rights on the internet. Hundreds of millions, maybe a billion, people all around the world saw what we did on Wednesday. See the amazing numbers here and tell everyone what you did.

This was unprecedented. Your activism may have changed the way people fight for the public interest and basic rights forever.

The MPAA (the lobby for big movie studios which created these terrible bills) was shocked and seemingly humbled. “‘This was a whole new different game all of a sudden,’ MPAA Chairman and former Senator Chris Dodd told the New York Times. ‘[PIPA and SOPA were] considered by many to be a slam dunk.’”

“'This is altogether a new effect,' Mr. Dodd said, comparing the online movement to the Arab Spring. He could not remember seeing 'an effort that was moving with this degree of support change this dramatically' in the last four decades, he added." "

    Sweet deal.
