Little advice, please.

I've got a piece of vintage stereo equipment that my parents had when I was growing up. I've waffled back and forth about selling vs refurbishing the piece. IF I decided to sell, does anyone have a ballpark value? I had considered using it to stack my 2 channel stuff on, but there are too many pieces. I'd have a Belkin power supply, receiver, preamp, CD and TT. Starting to sound messy, right? What do y'all think about the attached console and it's potential use or value?

    That thing is SWEET. I'd keep it. Put it in the mancave.

    That's always been my intention; however, it needs some work. For instance, when volume is adjusted, static is present. Sounds like some Deoxit spray at it's simplest, but until I dive in I will not know. Time is precious as we remodel an older home. That's why I'm second-guessing this thing.

    Is this a tube or SS console? If it is a SS console it isnt worth fixing and the value for selling it will be minimal $10-$20 bucks if your lucky.

    Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

    K, now something to consider. I don't know yet...having not popped the lid. It does have the warm tube-type sound, but until proven, I will reserve comment. Thanks!

    Check the back, it's probably thin plywood held on by 6-8 screws. Take them out and look - if you see tubes it might be worth keeping. If you have room and it reminds you of good family memories, I'd find a place to keep it.

    I think your console's cousin is sitting in my dad's house. It probably hasn't been powered up for 20 years and I believe it was a tube amped unit.

    I'll try to get over there to pull a model number off of it.

    They don't seem to sell for very much when I've seen them listed.

    My father has one too. He bought it in the mid-70's. Can't remember the brand. It's quadraphonic. Also has an 8 track in it. He uses it just as a piece of furniture. I think it still works. Not sure if SS or tubes.

    If this console has happy memorys attached to it it is worth saving irregardless of whether it is tube or SS or if you simply like it as a piece of furniture. As far as the static while adjusting the volume is concerned most likely a good cleaning with deoxit on the various pots will most likely clear this issue up.

    We've moved and been remodeling. My stuff has been packed away in a corner for way too long. This weekend I got to some of it and put the old Magnavox to use. Whaddaya think?

    What (if any) maintenance/repair have you had to do to your's? Had some lights replaced in mine, but have an annoying, albeit slight 'pop' when powered up that I know can't be good for the speakers.

    I've got a light out that I've never fixed. Scratchy pots are the only things I've had to deal with

    That Marantz is sweet. Looks identical to the one I owned when I was young (Around 15 years ago). It was a damn nice unit. I didnt know any better at the time when I owned it as to what a nice piece of equipment it was. My mother picking it up for $20 at a garage sale with a pair of speakers.

    I ended up unhooking a pair of speakers but forgot the unit was on and the wires touched...long story short, the left channel was crackly and shot. :(

    It's worth keeping even if nothing worked. It looks mancave worthy for sure.

    I googled it and there were several sites suggesting fixing them up for the mancave.

    That is a nice piece of furniture (like they use to make in the old days) and worth keeping as is, also looks good with the remainder of your gear.
