I wouldn't pay extra for an LCD on principle. I've heard the Anthem AVM20 is also a worthy competitor
-
Hell Yes! The AVM-20 kicks major A$$! Gonzo do yourself a favor and at the very least audition the Anthem. It's a great piece of equipment.
One of the really great features is the Room Resonance control that allows you to tailor the output of your sub to match your rooms resonance characteristics. -
If your in the market for a preamp thats around 3k then look into B&K.B&K is a bit finer then most or all in it's price class.
If your thinking Rotel check out the rsp1066,at 1499.99 it's a steal.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
i will have to check it out but the b&k has xlr outs and i dident get a amp with xlr ins. and it is around 3500. most placeses i go to will do a 10% off list so the adcom is around 2250 and the rotel is around 2700. i will have to check out the anthem. and i am looking at the 3 way swtching for the componet vid.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'll do the best I can to answer them. -
Since you were specific in your thread, Rotel would be my choice.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
-
my olny q is that how much more do xlr cost vs regular outs sence i dont have a amp with xlr?
-
Signal Cable would make this cost difference, nominal. Read into that, wouldn't make a difference....$50/ 2 Meter either way.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

again, I wouldn't pay more for balanced inputs if i wasn't going to use them. I am assuming you are using this in a traditional HT and the amp shouldnt be more than 2m away. I was under the impression balanced inputs only provided a worthwhile benefit over long cable runs or in areas with interference problems
-
Gonzo,
I wouldn't worry too much about XLR cables, unless you plan on putting the amp and preamp far away from each other. -
Gonzo,
If you are looking at the B&K Ref 50, it has both xlr and rca preamp outputs. My two channel B&K ST5 has the same thing. I use the rca connections since my interconnects are only 1 m long and shield noise very well.
Wow. You have a tough choice here. Rotel 1098, over at Club Rotel, a lot of members are ditching their 1066 preamps for the 1098 newer one. It sounds "musically" better according to the many favorable reviews. Then again you can get a good deal on a RSP 1066 at half the cost of B&K and / or Anthem and it may just suit your needs for now.
Anthem makes excellent gear and is definitely more musical than Rotel that I own or the RSP 1066. My Rotel dealer wants me to listen because he sells Anthem as well as Rotel. He also sells a brand called Audio Refinement which he says is the musical "almost equivalent" to Anthem but at a lower cost. Audio Refinement Pre-2dsp is what I'm talking about here with a Multi-5 Audio Refinement 5 channel amp. I've been wanting to go listen but haven't had the time.
Myryad MDP500 preamp at $2,600 is also a Stereophile "class A" rating.
You really can't go wrong with any of the choices that you have listed. -
the anthem 20 has some very nice specks. it has alot of feachers and the pocs of it look very good. i cant seme to find a dealer with the dealer locater.
the rotel has the usless tft disp on it at least i think. but has nice feachers.
adcom nice specks good looks bult in tuner and 3 composit vid switchng. also the cheapest of the bunch
anthem sh$t load of features upgradeable. bult in tuner. alittle more expencive. but cant find a dealer and dont have a amp with balanced imputs. but i do have a sub amp and my sub cabble is a very long distance.
b&k the most expencive. nice features. can find dealers. not as prety and not as many features. also furture upgradeable even more than the athem.
note also i am going to be bulding new set of ht speakers using a ribbon tweeter -
i sent cs at anthem a email back and they sent me 2 dealers but they were far from my house so i went to the anthem site agin. they changed their dealer locater to do 20 miles insetad of 2. and i found 2 more. now i can have a few to chose from. the anthem player is looking sweeter and sweeter i hope it demos as well as it looks on paper.

ok here we go cant wait till tomarrow going to demo the unit. i am reading the oweners manuel so i can get a heads up on the unit. i am going to bring my own dvd and cd to play so i have a referance point with my system.
i have herd the ref 50 and the rotel 1066 and now the anthem 20 i was sent a good price that i can get the b&k for.
if the anthem as good as it looks i will be weeling and dealing i am trying for a out door price of 2300-2400.
also it says not to plug the anthem 20 into a line conditishoner? is this true of olny cheap nes or good ones too? -
well guys and gals i have done it gone out and got a sunfire cima grand III it is a rela nice unit and has great sound. you cant twek as much as you can with anthem but has more inputs and was a bit more expencive. but talked them down to the same price as the anthem.

Congrats on the upgrade!! The TGIII was on my short list as well. Looking forward to your review! -
hook up was a brese it is a big unit as big as my onkyo787 not as deep and not as heavey but still heavey. the constructon is top notch heavy gague case with a cool lokig finish it is allmost like brushed black alumin. hook ups glore i have my x box and cabble hooked up and still have 1 componet vid hookup and also has dual vid outs for composet. it has enough digital ins to strangle a horse. 6 coxal and 4 optical ins balanced outs osd is prety strait forward and easy to use. it will even turn on the sorce that is playing like if youturn on your dvd player it will switch to dvd if you turn auto on.
i have most everything hooked up and it sounds awsome. i put in atlantis and the thx came up wow even with out calabrateing the channels are prety even and i for got to plug in my sub and i got awsome bass. get this it even has front effect channels..... i might have to find me some old rt35i and a 2 channel to drive them.
one other nice feature i like is the enhanced bass for when listning to music it will use the sub but still send the bass to the mains as if they were large and also send the bass to the sub.
now my systems weakest link is the cd player and the interconects. more revews tomarrow and pics
o yah i for got to label my rear surounds so i am haveing trubble getting all 4 in the corect spot. -
ok here we go i got the surounds fixed i messed with the dvd it came out of progresave scan when i had everything unpluged and it was also in 3-4 disp. this pre is great it has enough in and outs for now and in the futhure. there was 2 things that the onkyo was running short on was digital ins nd componet switching. let me just say that the picure is much sharper and looks better. also i can hook my comp into a digital in and the vid from the comp is looking great.
nw we will talk about the sound wow i mean wow it just brings out the sound of the movies and music. and now the sub sounds even better whit astounds me... monsters inc the sene where they explode the sock wow i am talking so real befor it was good but now.
well just to let you know this is my last upgrade till next year this time i spent a few extra bucks than i wanted to spend but it proabley saved me money i was going to get the rotl 1066 with was good but it was short on inputs that i needed.
