I would think your cell phone provider could track it?

You know, when I was a kid, our family had one cell phone, and it stayed in the shared vehicle that us kids drove. It was to be used for emergencies only. :p

The police may have to be involved to get the cell carrier to track it.

From what I have read - it doesn't sound like you will get much help on this. Do a google on this, and you will see that Apple's stance is not to get involved. It would be easy for them to track it being they control the syncing - but for some reason they choose not to. Sorry about your loss

Had a similar thing happen to my son in the spring with an i-pod touch. Stolen from the locker room while he was out on the field. I made sure to file a report with the school intervention officer. Basically if he didn't set-up the tracking there is nothing you can do. Very frustrating and I know how you feel.

Sorry, there are ways to track the phone but you won't get any help from your cell phone provider. There is no money in that.

Your cell service provider is hoping you will now buy another phone at full rate, at the minimum you'll get another phone. They also hope that the person that now has the phone will sign up for service and they will create another revenue stream.

Your best hope is file a police report and hopefully something will happen that you can get the phone back at a later time. (You might be able to get the phone ID from the cell provider if you didn't keep the paper work that came with the phone.)

Why does a kid need an iPhone?

Aside from that, file a police report....get a new phone.

Kid should never have taken it to school imo...we tell all the kids here "if you bring it, it's your fault if it gets stolen".

Now that I've got my "being an ****" out of the way...call the carrier and have them deactivate the phone. They have all the actual serial numbers and such, so if someone tried to reactivate it they should be able to find out and let you know.

I thought the newest iphones are unlocked meaning they can be activated under other plans, not just the provider you're currently on. At least that was what I was told when I looked into getting the newest one. Not sure if the phone is a 4S ect as it wasn't stated but if thats true it might be harder to track as if he was on AT&T and the person then puts its on Sprint ect.

While each provider has their own carrier-specific version of the iPhone, they all use the same identifying codes (IMEI, Serial, etc) and those codes are unique for each phone.

That's true though. It's not practical to trace each and every stolen phone. It's just a damn phone.

The problem with that being, if a phone gets stolen, ESPECIALLY at gun point, it's probably not the only crime they've committed.

For something like a phone stolen in school, getting caught now might help them make better decisions later in life...but it might not...so...

Wrong on that one. It's an armed and dangerous FELON with a stolen phone that can be used to apprehend them. For law enforcement to not use it to bring them to justice is derilection of duty, PERIOD, plain and simple on that one.

Thank you so much for this polite and civilized response.
    Just so I'm clear -
Questioning someone's parenting just because they bought their kid what is essentially an expensive toy - OK by you.
No, you just (wrongly) inferred that. However, I don't see TroyD or exalted512 constantly making judgements against others, so I felt no need to admonish either of them over a single incident.
Calling that person out - makes me a horrible egomaniac who thinks he's better than everyone and needs to be dressed down.
No, what makes you come off as an "egomaniac who thinks he's better than everyone" is that you are repeatedly judging and reprimanding others. I check this board daily, and I don't think I've witnessed a single day that you haven't managed to judge or belittle another member.
    Makes total sense.
In hindsight, I should not have made my previous post. I should not have participated in judging you or anyone else, and for that I apologize. Truthfully, I shouldn't even be attempting to defend and clarify myself here, however, it seems that I have somewhat sealed my fate with my initial post. This will be my last past on the subject.

considering you can get an iphone for free with a service contract, I'm not surprised the number of kids that have them. Especially with the advanced parental controls you can put on them.

If I had kids, they'd probably have one.

You ask what kid "needs" an iphone; The answer is the same as the number of adults that "need" them.

I have no qualms about my kids having cell phones. And really, I'd have no qualms about my kids having iphones since the price has dropped so significantly. And I do understand the upside of the parental controls, but I dont see a need for a kid to have a data plan unless of course they're paying for it them self. Am I crazy over the fact that a kid should have a cell phone at all? I'm 50/50 on it. I guess I'll make up my mind when I have kids that are of age. Definitely when they're of driving age, before that...I dunno. It would depend on your personal situation, of which I know none about Mantis'.

Do I think Mantis is less of a parent because of it? Obviously I do, according to Bobman.

To get back on track, Ryan mentioned some factual information earlier. Every phone has an MSN/EMEI/etc that is always transmitted as a part of the phone handshake with the network.

This is perfect for finding your phone and easy to do when you have access to the network. The problem is that you will not get any help from the provider in this case. It's not legal for one and as mentioned previously, they don't have a vested interest to help you anyways. It's better to sell you a new phone.

However, keep in mind that if you call and get this phone flagged, it's will be unuseable and the only thing they could do is resell it to someone who doesn't know any better. This has nothing to do with being locked or un-locked. That's different.

Personally I'd pimp slap your boy and then hug him laughing, with a whiskey bottle in the other hand....but that's just me.

Report the phone stolen, and move on.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
