My wife and I, 3 friends and my wife's favorite Polkie Brett22(Brett) spent 7 days in sunny Key West. Brett's been a family friends for many years and we convinced him to take a well needed vacation. We flew into Ft. Lauderdale and rented a van to drive thru the Florida and the Keys, to our destination which was a whole house we rented on Southard Street.

It was a great trip and the capper was our deep sea fishing trip in which we caught 3 kinds of Snapper(Red/Mango/Grey), Dolphin, Yellowtail and a 7 ft.-70 lb. Sailfish that was just absolutely the most beautiful fish I've ever caught....or helped catch in this case. That's pretty close to as big as they get in that particular area and the next step up is Marlin or Swordfish which were farther out than we were. The length and weight were recorded for later mounting but I don't think our friend is going to do it.

Anyways, as much as I would have liked to stop by, the draw just wasn't enough for me guys. Looks like you had fun from a couple pictures

Looks like fun. When I was in the Navy I was stationed a few islands up on Boca Chica at the Key West Naval Air Station, and caught a sailfish just like yours. Good job. It was a beast reeling that sucker in.

    Very cool!

I've been to Key West twice and loved it. Both times we drove down from VA; it's a 20 somethin hour drove one way, and I drove the entire way there and back myslef, only stopping for gas and the bathroom.

Key West has a very cool, laid back vibe.

    Glad you had fun!

The ONLY reason I don't mind going to Florida with my extended family is that we always go deep sea fishing. If not for that and the truly fresh seafood, I wouldn't ever go.

Looks like you had a blast.

Nice catch Doro! A friend and I went fishing on the Jolly Roger II way back in 1999. We ran into a school of dolphin fish and had about 5 poles going at once between me, the first mate and my friend and all I can remember was Captin Joe yelling at us not to cross our lines. Great time! Sorry for the picture of a picture but from left to right is the first mate, my friend, me and Captin Joe. Looks like you had a great time also!

That's awesome, small world. Joe Mercurio was by far the best charter boat Captain I've dealt with. He was yelling but it was the helpful kind and was only so we'd catch more fish. Excellent.

Key West is a cool place with lots of eccentric locals. I can see Brett and Doro blending in quite nicely. I am actually going to be in Key West next Monday. No fishing for me though...mainly beach and bars.

Doro - Great pictures. Thnaks for sharing. Brought back memories when I was there a couple of years of ago. Was that the Hemingway house in one of your pictures? Also saw a picture of a rooster. I hope you got to eat at a place called Blue Heaven which has roosters running around the outdoor seating area - Great atmosphere and food.

Yes and yes we did. We've been there 3 times so far and have done all the customary things. We tried Pepe's for the first time for breakfast and it was excellent. My wife bought a large print of a very colorful rooster that was taken at Blue Heaven and they're all over the place. It's weird but I like it.

You were in my home territory! Next time let me know and I'll throw some good leads and comps your way. I do vacation rentals in the Truman annex right down the road on southard. Green parrot is my main bar along with schooner warf. Glad you had a good time. You hooked up a good charter. I usually use high class hookers and lucky strike, but they are all pretty good. Stone crab season just started, I might help out my buddy who does it professionally. Or I might go diving with my treasure finding friends with the mel fisher troupe. Google Truman Annex vacation rentals and you should find me, Everett smith. I'll give polkies 10% off. Otherwise just hook up and I'll buy you a beer!

I don't make commission, so I wasn't soliciting, just giving polkies a favor. Here's some fish we caught about the same time you caught yours. My wife fishes more than me but I was able to go this time. Mostly red grouper, but yellowtail, mutton, black grouper and some other fish. You don't get sailfish everyday, the one you guys caught is a beauty! The picture you took of the navy ship is the USS Spruance. I was there for the commissioning. The very next sunrise I took this shot: all right, let me just rub in my life As you can see there is a lot more than just bars for entertainment. If anyone needs some heads up or advice before coming down let me know. I'm going to tell my staff to make a new discount program. Just mention "Polk Audio Discount" and you'll get the 10% off even during peak weeks. Consider it a group buy for Polkies to get the musical mind right. Here's my office next to the Truman's Little White House Museum.
