Anyone downloaded iOS 5 yet?

It's running on my iPad and my wife's iPhone, downloaded earlier today, here are a few notes and first impressions:

1 - It's unbelievable how well the full device mirroring works. My entire screen is mirrored, wireless to the router and then wireless to the apple tv on the other side of the condo. The lag is basically non-existant, I'm able to play a racing game on the iPad viewing on the TV and not have any issues due to lag. I knew it would work, but am shocked at how well it works.
2 - The new notification system is a huge improvement, long overdue but I actually prefer it over the Gingerbread system on my Atrix
3 - The find my friends and Find my phone apps are useful
4 - The location based reminders are cool, already tested it out and works great
5 - Safari is much better, nice to finally have real tabbed browsing on the iPad
6 - The new camera app is cool, having zoom right there in the app is nice, should be even more beneficial with the faster camera of the 4S.
7 - I could care less about iMessage, Newstand, Twitter, not being tied to a PC or most of the other features...
8 - iCloud...

I'm not sure how I feel about iCloud yet. I think I like the idea in theory, but have already found 2 major issues. On the photoStream thing, you CANNOT delete pictures out of the cloud, you have to wait until the 30 day mark then they get deleted automatically, I'm not a big fan of that AT ALL. The other issue is that push with the iCloud email doesn't appear to be working, hopefully they'll get that fixed.

Overall it's a very good OS and rounds out some of the features I've been wanting on the iPad, but it's not perfect.

Waiting a few days, both to let their servers settle (A lot of people are having problems activating and whatnot right now) and also to see how the jailbreak stuff shakes out.

One thing I'll warn that I've heard about the location-based reminders is that they kill your battery - it basically keeps your GPS on full-time. Just an FYI. Definitely looking forward to the upgrade.

man, it took 45 minutes for that...android slackers.

I'm anxious to play with one of the new iphones. Benchmarks have been impressive, to say the least. I wonder how the 'Amaze' will compare in side by side tests.

I was always a big advocate of jail breaking when I had my iPhone, I believe even before you got on board bob. My reason back then was being able to tether the phone, which I believe is now possible, I'm curious if there are other specific reason people are still jailbreaking...

I'm stuck waiting for the download... to make matters worse itunes said it has to update first before it can even begin the update on my ipod touch. Looks like I may not be testing out the new features until tomorrow... guess the SDA's will get a workout!

My list of tweaks right now is pretty long (~65 or so). iOS5 addresses a handful of them, for sure -- the notification system / lockscreen being by far the most obvious -- but there are other things that I'm.... hesitant to try and live without :

    - FolderEnhancer - lets me nest folders and put more than 12 icons in a folder
    - various phone tweaks, some as simple as being able to easily decline a call, but one that automatically switches to the last app i was using after receiving a phone call (rather than staying in the phone app, which is stupid)
    - 5 row keyboard (keep the numbers at the top of the standard keyboard all the time)
    - Google Voice integration (both for text and voice)
    - SMS quickreply (don't have to go to the SMS app to reply to texts)
    - 3G Unrestrictor (or My3G) - ability to download apps bigger than 20MB over 3G, and things like that.

Ther'es dozens more, some more important than others, but those are the ones that jumped out from my list of apps / tweaks.

No, because it would require me to get an iSomething, which I have no desire to do.

There is no way I will be switching over to an iPhone since Android much more open; iOS is too closed in my opinion. I don't like having to jailbreak a phone just to customize it or install a third-party app. I would also have to give up Verizon's 4G LTE service if I switched to an iPhone, and that is not going to happen.

As for tablets, I have no real use for them, but there are plenty of good alternatives to the iPad. I do kind of wish I had gotten in on the HP Touchpad fire sale if simply to play around with one.

Doing the Ipad2 right now, probably update the wife's 4 tonight and I've got a 4S coming tomorrow. Anyone tried it out on a 3gs? debating whether it'll be too slow.

Everything I've read says the 3GS is noticably FASTER with iOS5 compared to iOS4.

No... BECAUSE IT SUCKS AND WINDOWS PHONE 7.5 RULES. (Hey, I had to do it.)

Of my 4 friends who updated, 2 had their iPhones bricked. When are people gonna learn to let a few days pass before they update an Apple product?
    Equipment list:

Agreed on the waiting, though I doubt the phones were completely bricked (DFU mode is always an option except in the most rare of cases)

I used to think the same way, and even switched from an iPhone to Android. I'm on my third Android phone in 2 years (Samsung Craptivate, HTC Incredible, and now Motorola Atrix) and none of them has performed as well as my wife's iPhone 4. The Atrix is the most solid of the 3 and is overall a great phone, but I'm on my third Atrix, had to go through 2 of them before I got one that worked.

I'm a tinkerer by nature (always upgrading, overclocking my gaming PC, etc) and Apple produucts have never suited that side of me and as a result I've spent the majority of my adult life hating on and bashing Apple (there's plenty of evidence of that right here on the forum).

At some point though I realized that I just want some things to work, things like a phone and a tablet these days I don't want to spend time tweaking, I just want to pick it up and have it work. My days of spending hours on XDA forums and 'hacking' my Android phone to get the latest version cyagenmod 7.1 installed are over, I've got a wife and hobbies and other things to get done (like posting here).

The 'closed' system you mentioned is a correct assessment, and it's also the reason that my wife's iPhone 4 which is a year older and way underpowered when compared to my Atrix is still a better phone in terms of performance. There are advantages to open and closed systems, and i appreciate both, but for something like a phone I just want it to work, even if it doesn't handle flash.

I'm not an Apple fanboy either. I've gone from swearing I'd never buy an Apple product to buying an iPhone then switching to Android so I could tinker with it more then buying an iPad and am now considering ditching the Atrix and going with another iPhone just to simplify things again.

I downloaded the new iOS the morning it was available (I know, you should wait!) & have had zero problems. & I'm enjoying the new features very much! Nothing life changing, but just better & more useful.

Android is a buggy mess IMO. I appreciate the philosophy behind Android, but I too owned several Android devices (even bought the G1 at launch), and while the 'open' nature of them really does offer a lot of potential, the execution of the features they bake into Android is pretty sub-par. Openness is great, but not at the expense of stability, battery life, and overal polish. Hell, iOS hacked to hell with tweaks via jailbreaking is a lot more stable than android.

I much prefer iOS, WP7, and WebOS.

I too spent a lot of time on XDA forums...have frequented that place many times since my old T-Mobile MDA (long live WM6.5!). Up until I recently had an HTC HD2, which I hacked to dual-boot Android and WP7. Very fun device to tinker with, though WP7, suprisingly, was my OS of choice on it.

I've never had an issue with my android being 'buggy'. Once a month I might have to turn the screen on/off if the touch screen isn't perfect, but thats about it.

Actually, I do have a problem with my work email from time to time. It'll randomly stop getting emails and I'll have to turn the phone on/off, but thats it. You're supposed to turn these phones off once a day (or so ive heard) and that would probably stop that...but that's annoying. Happens once or twice a month i suppose.

I've had no issues with the android OS. Right now my complaint is the battery life for my charge. I do want to buy an ipad soon mirroring with the appletv will be nice. Does it automatically adjust to the correct resolution on the tv?

No, the iPad is a 4:3 ratio and displays that way on your TV, at least based on my limited use so far.

I've had some time to play with the Iphone 4 and iPad 2 after upgrading. I have to say, I'm liking IOS5 alot! Just updated my Macbook Pro to Lion and will do some testing with all the software I have (the same as on my iMac) just to be sure there's no compatibility issues.

Oh, anyone that has upgraded their iPhone, have you noticed an increase in battery life? I've noticed quite a good jump! Went to bed last night with it 100% charged. Woke up 6 hours later and checked...battery at 99%. Even sitting in my car all day for about 8 hours yielded only a 10-12% loss.
    No excuses!

I just updated my iPad2 to iOS5 tonight. WHAT AN EFFING NIGHTMARE!!

I'd provide more details but it took me all night to get this far and I am tired.

Long story short, I connected to my Windows laptop after updating iTunes. Took forever to download the iOS, then took even longer to install.

It performed the backup but what happened to it?? When it finally finished the update I had a look at the iPad and I lost just about everything. Most of my photos, all my music, all my apps, all my videos. Gone.

So I try to connect to iTunes again and get these friggin "cant connect because services not started" crap. I have to quit, go to the services and start it. WTF.

So I get them to talk again and it starts an auto restore or something. I'm looking at the iPad and start seeing all of my apps popping back in, as well as my music and vids. Cool, I say. When this finishes it then does another sync or something and wipes out my apps again!! Now it only kept 4 of my apps. So now I have to go to the app store and download all of my apps again.

To top it all off I am looking at the iPad and I do not see any difference the new OS has made. I have not had much time to really explore but first impression is unimpressive. And I am an Apple fan. Disappointment.

Oh, and does anyone else hate the sync feature of iTunes more than me? I doubt it. I don't even want to start about this because I will be up all night.

Anyway, after all this frustration I am still out most of my photos. This seems to be one of the things I cannot recover.

I wish I waited before I updated. Next time for sure.

@mudwrx, this is why you backup beforehand. You should always be able to restore from backup when things go wrong. Plug in your iPhone, right click on the iPhone name on the left-hand sidebar in iTunes, and "Restore From Backup."

Slight issues. First was all 3rd party apps did not work until I downloaded a free one. Understand deleting and reinstalling one would also work. Quirky, right?

Biggest complaint is that the appleid I've used since I bought my MacBook over 3 yrs ago doesn't work on the iPhone any longer. The id must be an email addy for icloud I suppose.

Still getting used to the istuff after trying a Moto Droid X. Actually had 4 of em and they all had show-stopping issues. Really liked the Android OS, but the hardware kept failing. Work with a bunch of iguys and it's contagious :).

Well, seems to be running great on the 3GS.... except that it lost my contacts. I turned on Facebook contact syncing for **** & giggles and ALL my contacts reappeared- including the ones not in FB. Seems to be picking up my itunes purchases pretty nicely as well.
