Pink Floyd 2011 Remasters

It looks like these came out on Tuesday, at least the base level Discovery package. Anyone listen to these yet, or read reviews anywhere online? The couple reviews I've seen on the box set actually don't look so good, so I'm hoping someone here has heard better.

I didn't order the box set, because there's so much of the older Pink Floyd I just don't like. Amazon should be delivering my selections of the albums I like. Most of what I have read indicates these are pretty much slight improvements over the 1990 CD mastering and much improved over my current set of Pink Floyd CD's which is the Shine On box set. I'm optomistic that maybe music company greed and my needs for a nicely mastered set of CD's are aligned for once!

There are some reviews over on bluray.com and the Steve Hoffman Music Forums.

Most excitement seems to be over the concert discs and esp. the Alan Parsons quad mix for the DSTOM Immersion set (not on the Experience set).

The sheer number of variations of DSTOM available on the Immersion set makes my head hurt - others will probably get a chubby

I'll wait for the fan fireworks to settle a bit - see how things sort themselves out for how these discs sound before getting any of them.

I will pick up WYWH on SACD but out side of that I'm out!! Not releasing Animals on vinyl or SACD = Fail IMHO.. DSOTM has been over played and I already own three versions of it..

I'll pick up WYWH on SACD when that comes out - might splurge and get the remastered CD of Animals - some threads give it a thumbs up and for about $10 at WM or Target - what the heck...

I may double dip and get WYWH on vinyl - I'm waffling on this.

i picked up the trilogy last night...dsom, wywh and animals....so far, dsom has more little details, snares sound like they're in the room, cymbals sound so sweet on my 198s, the soundstage is much wider, i'd say...the dynamics, from silence to full-tilt have alot more range..

wywh....jury is out on this so far...maybe i need the weekend

animals...just what we've been aching for...the veil has been lifted! details, layers, little tiny nuances...and i'm sober!

Just wondering what you're comparing this to. MSFL? 2003 Remaster?

    Thanks!

Just did a side by side comparison of The New Remastered Animals and the 1st Japanese Pressing of Animals.

Only listened to Pigs on the Wing pt 1

Japanese Pressing is the winner. IMO

I have most of Floyds output on LP, Remastered CD, and on Cassette multiple copies of each once Gilmour joined the band, are these remasters much better than previous remasters? I cant imagine shelling out any more $$$ for another Remaster, unless there is a difference, if so then I would have to have Obscured by Clouds, Meddle, DSOTM, and Animals, which is probably pretty pricey, and would give me a forth copy of each of those. I guess if they sounded better then its money well spent.

Ive listened to them all, and although they sound fantastic, i believe the 2007 "Oh By The Way" set is less trebly than these gems.
Again , i think they are very nice but still give upper hand to the 2007 remasters. Oh by the way (har-har) Ive just converted all of the new 2011 remasters to Audio-DVD PCM Stereo 48 kHz 16 bit. Sounds very very nice. I will do the same for the 2007 remasters and let you know how that went overall.

last week i picked up: DSotM, WYWH and Animals...This week: Atom Heart Mother, Obscured By Clouds, The Wall and Momentary Lapse of Reason...gave them some quick run throughs so far..i've never owned The Wall...thought it was too muddy...on the remaster i can hear snares! i'll give it a better listen this weekend....The title track to Obscured By Clouds: always one of my favorites..I played it tonight..my first thought? for a brief moment i thought to myself, 'that was a good idea to put that speaker right behind my head"! then i came to my senses...why it was the sda of course! the speaker stayed there...i even turned around..the cat might have to...mind you, i'm 100% sober..although i do have some brain cells that remember...the song featured all the sda dancing bears well off to the side..i know that's grateful dead stuff...i'm having a ball..a lot of it is my speakers have been very active recently with sda'ing...

    sorry for the ramble

I'm with you Mike on the sda'ing. SDA dancing bears ha ha! I'll have to spring that on the wife tonight with some copenhagen tracks I found. Last night was a late nighter me listening til 4:30am all Pink Floyd. Best SDA material for testing and relaxing. I streamed from my ps3 with the Earth screesaver on my 11' screen. If you have a ps3 that screensaver is awesome perfect for Floyd. If you need help finding it let me know.

You guys essentially convinced me to get this on vinyl. I'll have to order because we don't have a store that would carry it.

Same here. It is a great sounding CD. All of the SBM 20 bit super bit mapping CD's I've heard by Sony have been great. Another good one is the Blood, Sweat and Tears-Child Is Father To The Man Gold SBM 20 bit CD.

i picked up: animals, dark side, wywh, obscured by clouds, the wall and momentary lapse...i'll probably add a few to that...very much worth it...i picked up from that auction site, the live discs for dark side and wywh...the songs they were playing in 74 that would become pigs, dogs and sheep are worth the price of admission...if you've suffered thru bootlegs, these are a revelation!

Thanks for the opinions, guys. I'm a big Floyd fan, so I already have most of the albums in the Discovery set (except for a couple). I figured it was worth asking before I dropped that kind of cash on the whole set. But since I basically have the original versions of all the albums, I think I'll get it. It will be great to hear a better quality Animals mix!

I'm tempted to get some of the Immersion sets for some the Quad and Live stuff too. But man, it's going to get expensive quick!

BTW, thanks for the tip on that "auction site". It looks like you can get the Discovery set new for about $30 cheaper than through that "jungle" site.

So, I received the Discovery box set yesterday. I only had the time to sit down and listen to Animals, so keep in mind that I'm just talking about that one album in this post. I'll try to come back and update as I have time to compare the other alblums in the coming days/weeks...

I got out my original Animals CD, listened to a couple songs, then popped in the new remastered one. I went back and forth a couple times to verify what I thought I was hearing was true. Some of my observations include...

    1) MUCH better imaging on the 2011 remaster. On several parts of the original CD, the sounds just kind of mushed together. Not on the new remaster! There were still a couple parts where I thought they could have spread out the instruments a bit more, but they might have tried to be mostly faithful to the original positioning, which in understandable.

    2) The drums on the remaster are much sharper, with more impact. The cymbals sound great compared to the original also. The last minute of Dogs has some great tom rolls, but on the original it was fairly buried in the mix, so it never really grabbed me. Now they stand out and make you sit up and take notice - Nice!

    3) Some of the muddy parts have really been cleaned up on the remastered version. I think this kind of goes hand in hand with the better imaging, but I think it's also probably due to better EQing and not letting all the instruments sum in the mid-range as much. The bloated parts just seem cleaner...

    4) Roger Waters' bass can be more easily heard now, which is also a welcomed improvement.

If Animals is any indication of what I'll find on the entire collection of remasters, it was WELL worth the price of admission. So far, I give it a thumbs up!

A word on the actual package: The box is nice, but the cardboard sleeves for the albums leave a little to be desired. I wish they were in regular jewel cases, or even digipaks. I understand they are trying to save space, but I'd rather a slightly larger box with better quality cases for another buck or two than those cardboard things. I'll probably just rip them to FLACs, and maybe make some CD copies (for backup purposes only!), just so I'm not always taking the originals in and out of those sleeves. Then there is the 60-page color book... hardly looked at it. I bought it for the music!

(P.S. Note that my comparisons will be to the original CD versions. I have heard some people say that the latest remaster isn't much different than the previous "Oh, by the Way" remaster boxed set. Since I don't have that version, I can't comment on that. I also used a decible meter, to make sure that one wasn't louder than the other, which would skew my bass observations.)
