Chicken prices seem reasonably stable. Usually can get thighs or drum sticks for a $1.00 and breast for about $2.00.

Beef prices are reasonable considering they cut the fat content in hamburger. Can usually get hamburger between $2.00 and $3.00 on sale.

But what gets me is that beef dogs contain mostly scrap meat and the price has exploded.

that's the best place to get your meat... the local butcher shop/meat market.
we have one here (not in the best part of town) but they cut their own meat and it's some of the best... certainly beats the big chain grocery store meats.

they also make their own hot dogs.. where are wonderful.. and cheap. I highly suggest you try your local butcher shop next time you want hot dogs.

Not me, but will buy stuff on sale all the time. Just this weekend I was at the butcher, he had Fillet's wrapped in bacon for 1.99 each....not by the lb....each. 2 inches thick too.

Went in there to pick up some Venison for chili, football, cool weather, chili....I'm in heaven. He also had Bison on sale, they make great burgers if you guys haven't tried it yet.

Prices here are going north rather quickly, and the products that aren't,are shrinking the sizes to keep prices down. Just look at ice cream, pretty soon a half gallon will look like a quart. This is the result of devalueing the dollar, and excessive regulations. Maybe some will actually wake up and start giving a crap again.

have you all priced chicken wings???

used to almost give them away. I'd go to Costco a few years back and they would be like .99 cents per pound... now they are close to $4.00 pound. and there is almost no meat on them.. but they became trendy.. and prices jumped up.

chicken thighs are prob the best deal in chicken right now.. but wait a year or two and they'll become trendy too.. and the price will jump. it always does.

I think we are all missing the point here...

They're effin' HOT DOGS for god's sakes! It's not like they're made with the colonel's 11 secret herbs and spices out of filet mignon.

The price of groceries in general have been going up for some time, especially since we started sticking government mandated ethanol (corn) in our engines.

Plus...if I'm not mistaken, doesn't ethynol lower the mpg ? Then at the same time we regulate car makers to get the most out of a gallon of gas ? Sounds logical.

Since there is a shortage of corn this year due to the hot climate on top of everything else, you can expect everything with corn in it to go upwards. Thats a hell of alot of stuff, gas, high fructose corn syrup...alot of products have that in it. Livestock feed....thus meat/poultry will go up too.

I don't think we offer Hot Dogs 101 in our Economics Department but you guys are making me hungry. I may have to fire up the grill tomorrow evening one last time before it gets too cold under Canuck land!

Anyone have any 'good' topping ideas?

As long as you don't put ketchup on it, your good to go.

I told my wife years ago, Clint Eastwood says nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog. She called B.S.....until I showed her the clip. She still called B.S. So the other day we were out and about, stopped at a Hot Dog joint for a quick bite. She orders up 2 dogs with everything. You know....those dogs came she opened them up and sure as sh$t, no ketchup. You had to sand blast the smerk off my face as she quietly said to herself, " Son of a ....."

Some interesting ideas above. Ketchup? Are you kidding? I spent over a decade in NYC, if I ever put ketchup on a dog they'd probably never let me back into Manhattan, ever!

The mere thought makes me shudder. "Oh, the horror...the horror!"

I prefer the classic New York style - mustard and sauerkraut. However, I've been known to mix it up and put either swiss or cheddar cheese on it as well.

I've had my fare share of the NY Style. Have any of you ever been to Gray's Papaya in NYC. An interesting concept: Papaya juice and the classic NY dog--as described above!

My first experience of the Chicago Dog was at the Taste of Chicago fest..many years ago. Eat till you drop!

I have to remember to pick up some Hebrew Nationals on my way home today!

No ketchup or catsup should ever touch a hot dog, even the tofu or chicken bits dogs.

I had a relative in N.C. who used to have this Hot Dog stand where he sold his famous 'foot long' chili dogs! Man those were good!

As for ketchup. Well, I don't use it, but my daughter dumps tons of it on hers...in the interest of household civility, I turn my head away. lol
