Flooding in Central PA

We've had 3 days of steady rain, and now the river in Bloomsburg is predicted to crest at 30ft. All the creeks and streams are already over their banks, but the river remains below flood stage. Flood stage begins at 19ft... at 30 ft (if it reaches it), 25% of the town is inundated.

You can see the hydro map here - http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=ctp&gage=bmbp1&view=1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1&toggles=10,7,8,2,9,15,6&type=0

Luckily, I don't have to worry about the river where I live, so everything is just soggy for me. I suspect I'll be part of a skeleton crew tomorrow, though.

We lost phone and internet service at work (5 total T1's) at 12:30pm today, with no ETA on getting service restored. The building our service is fed from is located right next to a creek that regularly floods. While we're supposed to have reduntant fiber service, this has never been the case... everything is fed from that building, with no loop.
Ludicrous gibs!

WOw - Best of luck. I'm in the Lehigh Valley, and it's been raining for about 3 1/2 days, pretty much straight. Just wet here - fortunately the Delaware River hasn't been a problem yet! Keep us posted.

DAmn, I was just in Bloomsburg a week and a half ago.

nadams, I had no idea I was in such close proximity to a Polkie, else you would have gotten a surprise (unwanted) visit!:eek:

I guess those signs posted on some of the trees at Knoebels weren't kidding about floodwater height, eh? Hope they stay dry.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

I think you're safe there. If I recall my history of that area correctly. The last real flood damage of the Delaware in the Lehigh Valley area, Easton, that is, was the result of the aftermath of two back to back hurricanes that flew up the coast in 1955? The flood took out the bridge to P'burg, N.J. and rose past the first floor level of houses on the banks of either side of the river.

Hope it stops raining soon, Noah. That doesn't sound good at all.

Knoebels is completely flooded at this point. I saw some pictures of the creeks on Facebook, and it looks like they'll be a few weeks before they open up.

If I'd known you were so close, you would've been more than welcome to stop in here on your way through. Always happy to host a polkie and/or their family.

But yeah, it's really bad over in Elysburg right now.

Some more, if you'd like. These are from Benton, PA... this is creek flooding, not river flooding (and yes, there's a big difference).

PS- In case you care, it's STILL f'ing raining here!

Local rain causes the creeks and streams to do what you see above... Rainfall upriver causes towns to drown, like what we will see on Friday. The water that will cover 25% of Bloomsburg will be sourced from as far as upstate NY. We've had floods here in Bloom where we didn't see a drop of rain. Just part of living downriver!

Wow, I had no idea. It's hard to imagine we were walking through that park only two weeks ago, all nice and dry.

We've been getting some pretty steady rain for the past 2 1/2 days here as well, but not to the point where we're getting washed out like you guys! Damn... hope that goes away soon.

Took me almost an hour to get to work, normally about 15-20 minute ride. The Loyalsock Creek visible from I-180 just outside of Williamsport looks like a raging river...and the view of the farm fields up a side highway from the interstate look like lakes...nuts!

Going further south down the Susquehanne River in Pa. it's going to be worse! Some around here saying it's worse than the flooding in '72 from Agnes...I wasn't here then but it was bad.

The problem is the precipitation has been a very concentrated streaming band south to north for several days and has been right over the Susquehanna River Basin. Water tables have come up to ground surface in a wide area and all sources that empty into the Susquehanna are at full bore. Further south you go the more water of course. Now the hydraulics of the water is taking out bridges that were built POST Agnes! My daughter told me that the access bridges to Three Mile Island are in jeopardy...just nuts! Near Harrisburg the river is not expected to crest until at least Friday morning.
