You have been mislead grasshopper. You have been lead to believe that for people to "think" it is of quality it must be made in the US, have a high price tag and be made by a company with a well known name. Who have you been listening to? You might want to part ways with them and learn the truth.

Everything matters and the OP's approach is skewed.

The MMG's are a truly terrific budget speaker, but they require proper amplifier matching to bring out their best, any Maggie owner will tell you that. A tripath chip amp just doesn't have the balls to deliver the punch to make any Maggies sing, their just isn't enough high current. My modified PS Audio Trio C-100 chip amp (100wpc) sounds lifeless even on easy listening music on my 1.6's. Most of the maggie owners I know combine a quality SS power amp with a tube preamp, I myself use the SimAudio i7 integrated with my 1.6's.

You mention pro amps, after having them in my own rig with a variety of speakers and being able to compare between them and a traditional home amp, they're like Happy Gilmore, lots of power but no touch, refinement, or resolution IMHO. They are designed to be handled roughly and get loud with fairly efficient concert speakers. Give them a difficult load and their ability to create a soundstage collapses into two-dimensional mush.

The Yacqin gear is an interesting thought, and may just be the happy medium you're looking for. BTW, tubes and Totem gear are a terrific match if you go away from the MMG's.

Thanks MM......that's good stuff you're giving me..I'm heading more and more toward tubes...I thru in the pro-amp rant, just to show it can be done....not as a practical alternative......Some of the "Golden BB" crowd, here, are starting to piss me off....I think some of them are putting Gull-Wing Spoilers on their $2000 flux-capacitor Nano-Amps.

The Yaquin looks good to me at that money....I've definately decided to go for at the least a tube pre-amp.....The better I can do on the amp,the more I can spend on the speakers.

I've heard great things about the Totems, but I wouldn't be able to audition them b-4 buying.

The mmg's I could listen to......they have a 30 day,no-like,return feature and I beleve you can upgrade within 1 year.....that is a value/option that I'm always after......I think when I see/hear the next Maggie up the line....I'll really start to lose my mind.....My Tube Dac should be here next week and I've already got a pair of upgraded tubes on ebay......I even remembered to buy white gloves!(lol)

BTW....What did you pay for your maggies?....if you don't mind me asking...thanks,peter

I bought my 1.6's a few months back with the modified Skiing Ninja x-over. I was able to land them for less than what they go for in stock condition on the used market.

The new 1.7's go for $1999pr and have been shown to be a bit easier to drive than the 1.6's though still needing some serious juice. Therefore, if you are thinking that you might upgrade from the MMG's, you'll need to rethink amplification.
