I have been looking for a pair of SRS and primarily the 1.2's. I have a chance to purchase a pair of the SDA SRS models. I see that the crossover is different and I am sure it is improved but what are the differences? Are they tremendous? I know the 1.2's can be upgraded to the 1.2 tl's but am not sure of the SRS's. Please help quick. I need to make this decision fast. before they go away.

They cannot be upgraded to the 1.2tl status but some prefer them to the 1.2TL. If the price is right, I'd say snag them.

I don't really know what the right price is. He's asking $1600

are the drivers the same between these models so that (even though in depth and fairly expensive) the SRS's could be converted to 1.2's and essentially tl's if desired

are the 1.2's labeled clearly as 1.2's on the speaker itself or is the best way to determine this by inspecting the crossover?

Yes. Although you can determine it physically. There's a ton of information in here about all the SDA models.

The SDA-SRS's will have a blade/blade on the back for the interconnect cable, and all SRS's have thirteen screws on the crossover plate.

The 1.2's 90% of the time will only have 9 screws on the crossover plate and will have a pin/blade on the back for the interconnect cable.

The 1.2's can be tl'ed if you wanted to use the SL3000/RDO-198 tweeters..

That should get you by for now..

Just for the record the SDA-SRS's and the 1.2's are a fantastic speaker don't get so wraped up in they need to be tl's.I also woudn't pay $1600 for them..

In mint condition, I would go $1,200 because you are going to want to put new RDO 194's in them. The cost for the upgrade will be around $400, so that brings you to the original $1,600 price. I had the original SRS speakers and they will rock the house but you will also need a good 4 ohm amp to wake these speakers up. I have 1.2's and like them a little better plus they are 6 ohm speakers and are a little easier to drive. You can't lose on any of the big boys, just make sure you have a large enough room to open them up to appreciate them. Good luck.

does anyone know if there is a difference in drivers in the SRS and 1.2's? the crossovers are very similar with only the addition of 2 caps and 1 resistor, the removal of 3 caps and 1 resistor, and changing 1 inductor and 1 cap to go from the SRS to 1.2. (according to the schematics posted in the sticky). Naturally the interconnect wiring would need to be addressed but that is just correction of 2 wires. It also looks like to go from the SRS to the 1.2 or the TL is about the same amount of work (simply by looking at the schematics) as long as the driver compliment is the same, (except for the tweets of course in the TL's). These look to be fairly simple mods, but i am a newbie and could easily be missing something. I guess my main question in this particular reply (to help me with the other questions of value and difference in sound) is are the drivers the same or different. The schematics give the stereo drivers in the 1.2 and TL models to be 6503, and the dimensional drivers to be 6511, but does not say for the SRS. It also gives the tweets to be sl3000 in the TL's but does not say for the SRS or 1.2's.

The SRS only has the 6503 in both the stereo and dimensional sides.
The 1.2 and 1.2TL have the 6503 on the stereo side and the 6511 on the dimensional side.

    So you would need to:
1 revamp the crossover 3-400+ because once you open it up you should update the parts anyway. And inductors aren't exactly cheap.

2 get 8 MW6511 or equivalent replacement from Polk to replace the 6503's in the dimensional array. Around 400.00

    3 get 8 RDO198 replacement tweeters to replace the SL2000 400.00

Your looking at 1200.00+ in upgrades alone without the purchase price of the speakers themselves.

Do you see why nobody has done this now?

Thanks Joe, just the info i was looking for. Like I said, I'm a newbie and still learning, I'm just trying to cram a lot in fast.

No problem, Just don't want to see you get in over your head when what your looking for is out there already.

I forgot to mention that spending that much on them will not make them worth 2000+. They will still be SRS's but upgraded SRS's which is more of a niche.

I think this says it all in regards to converting the SDA SRS to SDA SRS 1.2TL.

"There have been questions concerning what is required to "upgrade" the SDA SRS to the SDA SRS 1.2TL. The answer is: NOTHING! Although the original SRS and the SRS 1.2TL look nearly identical to the casual observer, they are entirely different speaker systems. The only things they have in common are the stereo drivers (MW 6503), passive radiator (SW150), and the physical arrangement of the drivers on the baffle board. The cabinets, crossover circuits, SDA interconnect cable, binding posts, SDA drivers, tweeters, and SOUND are different between the two speaker systems." ~ DarqueKnight

thanks for all the input. The price came down, and after a 10.5 hour trip I got them home. They are indeed the SRS's according to the earlier descriptions given here ( I haven't pulled any drivers or x-overs yet). After midnight when I got home Friday night and had to get up early to go with wife and her family for a short labor day weekend trip. Am back home but have to do some outside work now as the rain is coming later tonight, Still haven't hooked them up and listened to them in my house on my gear. Should get this done later tonight. Plan is to replace grille cloth and listen to them for a while before I decide what else to do. I am sure cabinet mods will come first since i can make my own rings, spikes, etc and do almost any woodwork. Will probably mod the 2B's first since they are smaller, and less expensive to perform the mods to. This will give me an idea of what I feel is worth the cost to perform on the SRS's. MAN I'M EXCITED! I could keep typing (rambling) for a while. But if I'm going to listen to them tonight I've got to go get some work done.
