Well folks, I am going in for a tonsillectomy tomorrow... I am a little freaked out. While it is not my profession, I am a musician and I do a lot of singing. I am terrified it will mess up my voice. I have asked the surgeon to be extremely careful, and he keeps reassuring me, but it still freaks me out.... At 30 I hear recovery is pretty rough!

Anyone here have a tonsillectomy as an adult? Any suggestions on things to eat?? I am going to be doing lots of smoothies for a couple days, but can't think of much else!!

Had mine out 48 years ago at age 6 and it was a **** even then.

I remember lots of pain, popsicles and Pinky the Puppet (something the Candystripers gave kids after surgery).

I hope it all goes well. Maybe you'll get Candy the Stripper instead .

Somehow, I think Pinky the Puppet won't be much consolation to me

Would suggest soft foods, like applesauce, jello (whipped or not), milkshakes slushies, etc

Popsicles. Lots and lots of popsicles. You probably won't want to be doing to much sucking, so if you do smoothies, make sure to have a spoon handy. I had mine out around 8 and it was no fun. I had a bad infection when they removed them and that didn't help much.

While they're in there, you ought to have them do an upgrade, maybe to Sonitonsils. They should bring a little more clarity to your high notes.

Thanks for the laugh!!!! I will see what they can do!

Good luck on the surgery. I'm guessing your voice will change, purely from the absent of mass being removed. I know my daughters voice changed when she had hers removed.

Curious as to why now at this age you decided to have them removed. Just askin' is all.

Good Luck! But I am a bit confused. This procedure is far more 'rare' these days owing to antibiotics and other drugs. Back when I was a kid, they often yanked them unnecessarily (of course I still have mine). I doubt they do this today.

But have your tonsils essentially failed to function, or do you just have too many infections?
In any case, I hope they don't change anything for the worse.

Why are they coming out? Best of luck though, hopefully the healing is quick.

I still have mine, along with my 4 wisdom teeth and I've never even broken a bone or had any type of surgery, never even had stitches.

They're probably planning to intubate you (put an endotracheal tube in) and use general anesthesia. The tube, while it will slide between your vocal cords, should not do anything to harm your voice. You may be hoarse for a few days, but that will resolve without any permanent issues.

I never had surgery my whole life until the last 18 months. Then I ruptured my achilles tendon. The surgery wasn't bad - the recovery sucked! The anesthesia made me so sick for about 15 hours I couldn't even keep a glass of water down. :frown: Ask you anesthesiologist for medicines that'll prevent nausea/vomiting after you wake up so that you don't have to go through this.

I requested them for my second surgical event last Friday: an inguinal hernial repair. Post op went much better, the anti nausea meds worked like a charm.

It will take probably a week for you to feel normal again as it takes a while for the anesthesia to fully leave your system. You'll think your OK and then you'll feel really spacey - a good time to play some tunes!

    Good luck!

I have had surgery before actually. They put me fully under for a cyst removal on my tibia. No fun, but thanks for the heads up on the anti nausea, that is the last thing I need with surgery on my throat!

I have heard this surgery can be pretty tough as you get older.

Also, you will find out what foods you can stand pretty quickly, but i just dont see acid fruity type foods being a lot of fun, salty also, but as i said you will find out quickly.

As a survivor of 13 surgerys, a car crash, and twelve broken bones, trust me on this, after THREE days you will feel a difference in the pain, there is something about the bodys healing timetable.

ymmv, but that has been my experience.

In a lot of pain, but my doc said it went well. They pulled both tonsils and adenoids. It still hurts a lot even on liquid hydrocodone and percocet. I have just been sitting watching movies all night on the LSiM 703s :) Not a bad way to spend my time in pain.
