Hear in Easton MD we're about 120 miles from the epicenter as the crow flies - it was a short and sharp quake - not the rolling kind you get in california....

Sorry, I just saw you were asking about NYC...

    oh well,anyway incase this thread gets answered by all;

I've have a bad neck ache for weeks and I'm low on meds,I get refills tomorrow, so I went and laid down to rest a bit. At 2:00 I felt what seemed to be our cat jumping on the bed and actually walking up to my head. I opened my eyes to look at her but she wasn't there..
Then my bedroom closet mirrored bifold started to try and open over and over again...

    Ghosts, I thought.. maybe....but doubtfull.

Then It seemed like the house was getting pushed by a VERY LARGE truck in a rythmic manner.

Lasted about 15 to 20 seconds all total.

we had sliding, mirrored closet doors in our bedroom in Milpitas, CA - they were excellent detectors of minor earthquakes, rattling on their tracks.

Yea, looks like it was centered about 1/2 an hour to the east of us, 1/2 way between Cville and Richmond.

Me and a guy from work were walking across the street for lunch when it hit. We looked at each other kinda crazy and he basically said "what the hell kind of train is that?" and then I realized we're about a mile away from train tracks where we were. We took a couple more steps and the second tremor came through and we realized it was a quake.

You could hear buildings rattling, and it "looked like" a quake was happening if that makes sense. Good thing we're in an ex govt building; our work building is actually a nuclear bomb shelter in Cville, so we are way safe here. Still, they wisely evacuated the building till the tremors stopped. Craziness!!

Around noon, I felt something but tought I was feeling sick as I was not feeling the ground shaking but just a feeling of slight motion. I am not sure how strong it really was here as I was sitting on an 8'' mattress (electric bed) and I believe this might have tempered the real effect. I realized I was not sick and something else was going on but couldn't say for sure it was a earthquake. Few minutes afterward, I've seen Serendipity's post.

When Serendipity originally posted I did not dare reply as it seemed impossible I could have felt it in Gatineau but in fact, it was felt all the way to Montreal; http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/East+coast+earthquake+felt+Montreal+Toronto+Boston+York+Washington/5295180/story.html

A friend told me a similar story a minute ago. He was in a recliner and it felt like when his son shakes it from the arm rest. His son was not at home at 2:00.

Didn't feel a thing guys. Too far North? I do remember a morning quake in NYC back in the '80s. I was on the top floor of an East Side Apartment building and woke up about 30 seconds before the quake. The ground shook, the building rumbled--it felt like a giant were pulling the structure like a toy wagon that lost it's wheels. After a minute, I fell asleep again.

Not a big quake, but certainly a wake up call to how 'small' we are, or at least, how helpless I would have been had things continued.

It is my understanding that small quakes are quite common, though?

A vast majority of the population on this coast has never felt an earthquake before... Do I think there's overreaction? Sure... But I'll tell you right now, it freaked me out...

No, it's not an over reaction nor is it due to inexperience with earthquakes. We don't get big quakes here on the east coast often at all so the buildings are not built to tolerate quakes like that. in addition, there are structures in this part of the country that are much, much older than those young whipper snappers on the west coast. They are brick and mortar and not very good at standing up to an earthquake. Same for lots of stone bridges. So lotsa stuff needs to be inspected by engineers to determine structural integrity before it can be used/occupied again.

If not and there is something wrong, lotsa people could get hurt/die.

BTW, my building at 15th and Market was moving a good deal. The floor was undulating several inches. windows were vibrating like the building was breathing and I'm told the floors above me, the drop ceilings were coming down. They said the building was OK but I left anyway because the commute home took 2.5 hours at 2pm. At 5:30, when I normally leave, I'm betting at least an hour longer.

I was working in Arlington, va, accross the street form the pentagon and TSA headquters. My building was evacuated, as was theirs. I was on the 9th floor of a 12 story building, and we were swayin pretty good. No injuries, though!... I was just glad it wasn't a bomb or something...
