All I know is my Sterns and Foster, when new, talkin' box spring and matress, king size, was just shy of 5 large. What the heck justifies 5 large ? Beats me, except that maybe people tend to keep them 10+ years so they want to make all their money upfront. Maybe some sort of alien technology I'm not aware of.

Believe it or not I bought a bed frame, head board, night stand, mattress and slatted bed base (instead of a box spring) at IKEA for about $800 and as long as you don't but the least expensive mattress and slatted bed base it's excellent quality stuff. I've had it just over a year now and best night sleep I've had in a long time.

The slatted bad base: - 39 slats of layer-glued birch, divided into 5 comfort zones, adjust to your body weight and increase the suppleness of the mattress.
    - Ten slats are adjustable to give your shoulders and hips just the right support.

    Mattress - 506 springs/Queen size.
To be completed with a slatted bed base, a box spring or foundation.
    - High resilience foam cushioning responds to your body's curves.
    - Active-Response Coils respond independently to cradle your body and help relieve pressure points, while keeping your spine properly aligned.
    - Active-Response Coils are individually wrapped to insulate movements so you don't disturb your bed partner.

Really is sleek Euro looking and I have no complaints about the quality at all. It's been assembled, disassembled, moved and reassembled without issue. I'd buy again.

Did you grab that from Ikea's web site bro ? C'mon, funky terminology for stuff thats been around for ages. It's cool you dig it though because in the end that all that matters. Still looking for that alien tech though that makes 5 large worth it. Though I have slept on lesser quality in the past and the couch is actually more comfy. Regardless, we all have our preferences for a good nights sleep. Mine usually are peace and quiet above all else.

Yep, cut and paste. Just to give an idea that it ain't some cheap-**** crap. The slatted bed base was a pretty cool design, especially that it's firmness is adjustable. Not rocket science for sure, not like a $3K mattress and box spring, but I continue to be damn impressed with the quality

    Tempur Pedic Cloud Luxe.

It is the softest matress that Tempur Pedic makes. I really like it but have only had it for about a month. I dont sleep to hot.

Do you guys who sleep hot have a mattress pad on? I have kind of a nice one on my bed. I feel the same temperature wise as the regular mattress I had before.

The memory foam bed gets hot fast. There is another material out there that uses latex, without the heat build up and feels very nice. You may want to look into that.

Just curious, when you two...uh....get together, which side do both of you use ?

I only ask because of the big difference in the numbers.

I have a Sterns and Foster matress, sucker wasn't cheap either. Could someone please tell me why these things cost so much ? There's really not much to them. Is it all in R&D...like razor blades ?

This seems like an awfully forward question, but for some reason I don't mind answering. We..uh.. get together on both sides and have also been kind of across the bed a bit too. Really it all depends on chance as to where we've ended up when we "get together."

I've slept on a tempurpedic once and didn't like it at all. It was a very comfortable feel, but I was way too hot! I am always warm and our sleep number doesn't feel quite as warm, but we have some special temperature regulating thing that my g/f had to have, so that might actually be helping.

Getting rid of the waterbed 10 yrs ago was the best investment EVER!!!!

The one I have today is a double pillow top California King, you have to just about crawl up to get in bed and slide out of it to get out..

I have always wondered about how hot you would get in a Tempur-Pedic. We have one of those 3" mattress pads made from Tempur material and it does get stupid hot.
I easily defeat (or most of the time  ) the mattress heat issue with simple new habits. No heavy blankets even in the winder, just the sheet and thin blanket over the bed all year around and...

Keeping the heat lower than most people would do; winter is the electronic thermostat brings the temperature down (max is around 70 degree) and it pays of as my electricity bills are decent even during the winter months (electric heat all over the house). In the summer, same blanket arrangement but during the hotter days, my combo de-humidifier/air conditioning and ventilation is pushing cool air away from the bed foot but the ceiling fan circulates the cool air evenly in the bedroom. Believe me; it works as I unfortunately found out one morning how effective it was. Middle of the night, air conditioning stops as the water thank was full and was too lazy get up and empty the stupid thank. I was soaked and wet and had to strip all sheets and blankets and put some fresh ones on. Yep, the heat in foam mattresses bed can get quite uncomfortable but there are ways to work around that.

    I am seriously looking at organic mattress natural memory foam for the next purchase round (however, some better may come around before than);

The above sentence gave me a visual memory of my little sons way back then when they were just toddlers, I visualized the little ones crawly up the bed with just enough strength to get to the top and slowly crawling down as if they were worried about a quick fall of their large and high bed for their smallish size.

What's up with this TFLF? Is the bed actually too high or is the problem being a short (_I_) ?:tongue:

I fully agree with you that a mattress is a very important purchase. When you think about it, an average of 6 to 8 hours is spent on it trying to recover of a stressful day, be physical or psychological. A good night sleep is imperative.

I get hot in just about any bed that I sleep in. I rarely move at all in my sleep, so I just continue generating heat in one spot. The Tempur-Pedic seems worse than the Sleep Number to me, but a regular $hitty bed is cooler yet.

That being said, I would take either of those beds in an instant!

I don't sleep well as it is. I'm particular about the bed, but my wife doesn't care much what we get. She could sleep on a rock if she had to. She falls asleep in 2 minutes, and it takes me at least 30. If I have to spend more for the "right" bed, so be it. I'm a little concerned about the temperature issue with the foam... I can't sleep when I'm too warm. Think I might need to head over to the Select Comfort store.

I wonder if the US has similar mattress store policy as some of our CDN stores offers, some like 90 days trial period as long as you buy the mattress cover? Worth spending a few extra $$$ to have the security of being able to return your mattress and trade for something else if the mattress is not suited for your personal needs.

You can buy a nice one for a hundred bucks, and yet Select Comfort charges thousands, more than a traditional mattress in most cases. It's a rip off.

I have trouble sleeping due to neck pain, and a Tempur-Pedic pillow was one of the first things I tried. Very comfortable, but I would get way too hot and I would end up sweating before I even fell asleep. My wife on the other hand loves it, but then, she gets cold while sitting in the sun when it's 85 degrees out.

I wish I could tell you what this thing is, but I just know that it goes on the bed before you put the sheets on. I just signed off on the bed and was approved for the 18 months at 0%, then she went to the store and looked around. She came home and told me what bed we should get and what other stuff we "needed." I didn't feel we needed it, but it wasn't worth my effort to actually object. I'm sure that many of you understand this:rolleyes:

I see and agree with your point up to a certain point as I can relate to bobman1235 reflection and frustration.

When I go visit my sister I actually sleep on an air mattress and I find that my sleep is often better than on my own home memory foam electric bed and her mattress is quite simple, yet seems of quality, not sure if it cost over 100$ but definitely did not cost 1000$s. The portable air mattress has evolved greatly, many are firmness adjustable and definitel don't cost an arm and legg. However I too realize you get what you pay for so not too sure a portable air mattress in the 100$s would last as long as one in the 1000$s

My dad bought one. I watched them put it together. It is exactly an air mattress with padding around it. Or, two air mattresses I guess. ANd a bunch of foam rubber blocks.

I understand that it's worth it to you,a nd I'm happy you found something that works and that has lasted. I don't make any claims against its durability or efficacy. Merely that from both an R&D and a materials standpoint, it doesn't seem like a reasonable price to me.
