    ok....

    two things....

first - bid on buy it now items. that way you get it, no one else does, it's a set price, it's less than the going price (if you only buy buy it now items that are less than the going price.).

two - just put in your top dollar amount a few hours before the end of the auction - if someone outbids you then say la V

third - if you really wanna game ebay then sign up for eSnipe... that's what someone who is outbidding you with 1 second to go is doing (maybe).

fourth - find better bargains on craigslist.

I love the people that start bidding on E-bay with 5+ days left on the item. Seriously folks, that is the most ridiculous thing to do, do people know all they are doing is creating a bidding war. Hell even if it's 1 hour plus, odds are you are just going to incite people to drive the price up. I've seen items go for more than the buy it now price because of the adrenalin people have in winning an item no matter what it costs. A smart shopper is a well educated one, patient and willing to wait for the right opportunity. Dont get caught in a bidding war, odds are you will lose cash in that battle.

    1. Decide on what you are willing to pay. If you are within 5 bucks off the CURRENT price, odds are you wont be even close on your final bid anyway. People always have a higher price as their maximum bid anyway.
    2. Wait until there is less than 30 seconds on the timer and fire your bid.

If it was meant to be, so be it, if not, at least you will walk away knowing you didnt overpay for something. Or pay more than you actually wanted to, not necessarily overpay.

This may not be the best advice for everybody but it has worked for me. Bidding early has never been advantageous in my opinion.

This is the advice you should adhere to. You are not going to get something for nothing. Savvy buyers wait until the last seconds and then bid the max they are willing to pay for that particular item and hope they get it for less. The dumbest thing you can do is start bidding the item up prematurely or expecting to get it for nothing.
You are likely getting outbid from smarter bidders, although there are always those that overbid an item.

It's not dumb at all to bid early!! Some people can't be at a PC all the time. So we put in a bid and max. amount in reserve and go about our lives and look at the results asap.
I've won some and lost some... I don't consider it a dumb process at all. Heck, I just did that this weekend. Nobody bid against me on one, a little on the second and I only lost the third due to somebody (only 1 person) outbid me due to my max. running its course. I really hated to loose the third item but man, my max was 10.00 more than I thought it was worth to me already. It was a rare item and I still stretched past my comfort zone. If I maxed out 30.00 past, would I have won it?, I'll never know but at least I set a limit. I'm not rich or a power bidder who will win at all costs.

PS. I will go 5.00 more if there is another item pops up like what I missed out on. Or I'll click the buy it now of course if that option is there.

The snipe service...still only goes up to your max alotment also. Ebay does that automatically also as the bids roll in.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I started using Esnipe about four months ago from a recommendation on this forum and so far I have found it worth the extra cost to me for the following reasons:

I am busy and not around the computer much during the week until late at night. The service allows me to find an item and place my max bid easily.

When I just bid my max bid into ebay, I have experienced a lot more occurrences of individuals just running up the costs than bailing out. Many bidders will keep bidding close to their limit to have their high bid in. On lightly contested items, the last minute bid lets them "HOLD" the item until the moment of truth.

Eliminates some of the need for self discipline as it is hard to get caught into the bidding frenzy if you are not there.

You cannot have the last minute problems like having your sign in time out while trying to enter your final bid. Been there, done that!

The last thing I bought was a martin logan center channel a couple of weeks ago that I won in a bidding war lol .Last week though I bought a couple of martin logan matinee's for the buy it now price .They were cheap and did no want to get into a bidding war

The only thing that really got to me about being outbid several times this week was that I can get an idea of who the bidder is by there feedback rating on the bid list . From what you say he must have had esnipe for the fact that his only offer came in at around 1/10 th of a second

I have to go find the esnipe thing, TroyD the reason you have forest gump running around your head is because you may have a sexual crush on tom hanks perhaps ? Why else would you wake up with the morning glory and think about him ?

My lack of understanding comes from how the buyer beat me in the last mili second by $5 . Whats so retarded about that and the only classic here is your attitude/responce to a normal question to a forum member thats new to ebay

Just for **** and giggles, I'm going to just give you an honest, non-sarcastic answer, and see how it goes.

It sounds like sniping was already explained to you - there are programs that can put in a bid at the last millisecond.

Bidding doesn't work like you think it does, and if you had taken 19 seconds to read a FAQ on eBay before using it and then crying like a girl when it didn't work the way you expected, you'd know this. When you enter a bid on eBay, it is a maximum bid, and the system will bid, in some increment set by the seller, on your behalf UP TO your maximum bid. So if your maximum bid was 100 dollars, and someone bid 200 dollars, they're going to win the item for 105 dollars, because eBay bid for them in the bid increment until it beat your maximum bid, but no more. If you then bid, say, 150 dollars, they would STILL be winning, because eBay would again bid on their behalf until their bid was ahead of yours, up to their maximum.

Which is why everyone here, who you have ignored, has said "just bid the max you're willing to pay." That's it. If you're willing to pay 200 bucks, bid tht, and the system will bid as much of that as it needs to for you to win, or you'll lose if someone's willing to pay more. End of story.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
