PFB, if you bite every time some is throwed at you the circle will never end. Just learn to ignore the curved balls and just carry on with what you are trying to achieve otherwise you feed your own post with fuel. Just be patient and maybe someone will provide you with some answers that may be of use to you.

I am not much of an ebay buyer but IMHO, this like any other close bid venture you get involved in. If you are at your first experience(s) with ebay, this is a learning curve and frankly you can bid without successes on many occasions but some day it will pay off.

My personal experience with close bids is to first know your budget; then the second thing is to not provide your full budget until very near the deadline (seems like the cleaver bidder that outbidded you knew that! ), your can slowly up your bid if you so wish but if you really want what's offered, your last bid should come as a surprise, trying to cacth the other bidder(s) with their pants down not expecting at all what your final play is.

Good luck with your next bid(s) and enjoy the game!:cool:

If you win - you paid more than anyone else was willing to pay at that time... was it a good deal?

    Please don't call us dorks.

What might be happening is sellers upping your bid as much as they can and maybe out bidding you by mistake or hopeing you'll have just one more bid-hike waiting to post. Ebay, a year or two ago, stopped showing bidders signatures......why?, for just what I said above. It was easy to track scamming sellers!!! Now we can't..

So bid what your willing to pay. That's what I do if I bid anymore.

I also got very Pissed years ago for your same reason. I then relaxed and bid a set figure in the very beginning or close to the end and let it ride....

    Try that.

When I bid on eBay, I'm usually there to play for keeps or my wife is as she uses my non-stereo account as well. She's terrified of eBay and gets so stressed out its funny. If you really want it, you have to determine how much and stand by the commitment, otherwise, just go home. You may very well pay more, or less, depending on the item but its for you and not someone else so who cares what the others think.

When I used to buy on eBay I used a sniping service that would automatically put in my bid in the last second. You just had to know your price limit up front. Also kept me from getting sucked into a bidding war.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Sometime good, sometime bad deals but what it boils down to is knowing the market pricing and sticking to a budget.

Personnally, I am much more comfortable with live close single bids. I know my budget, bid low on multiple lots (could be 10 to 20) that are of interest and if I am lucky to win 1 or 2 of them, I know I made a good deal as I know probably 80% of the bidders had the intention of selling their winning bids on ebay with mega profit. Actually I haven't been to any Crown Assets bid in a long time, maybe I should go back just to see how rusted are my bidding skills.

Yup. The best ones are in China. Those underage fingers can sure bid fast. Alas they have moved on to WOW farming shops now so I had to find another avenue.

Actually, if you looking for good audio deals just bid on stuff with pics showing the gear with lots of dust on the item. Sure to win every time.

    Indeed it is...
More controversial than manual auction sniping are auction sniping websites. To use an auction sniping website, a prospective bidder supplies the website with his or her eBay account information, the item number he or she wishes to bid on, and desired bid amount. The website then visits eBay to determine the precise closing time for the auction in question, using the bidder's eBay account information to place the desired bid at the last possible moment on his or her behalf.

Ebay is for saps. Find what you want at Audiogon or the Polk FM.
I've seen too much stuff go used for more than you could buy it new for by shopping around. Only the last 5 seconds of bidding counts, so
set a budget, learn to snipe, or just get used to not winning very often.
Losing has it's perks. You still have your money.

I love the people that start bidding on E-bay with 5+ days left on the item. Seriously folks, that is the most ridiculous thing to do, do people know all they are doing is creating a bidding war. Hell even if it's 1 hour plus, odds are you are just going to incite people to drive the price up. I've seen items go for more than the buy it now price because of the adrenalin people have in winning an item no matter what it costs. A smart shopper is a well educated one, patient and willing to wait for the right opportunity. Dont get caught in a bidding war, odds are you will lose cash in that battle.

    1. Decide on what you are willing to pay. If you are within 5 bucks off the CURRENT price, odds are you wont be even close on your final bid anyway. People always have a higher price as their maximum bid anyway.
    2. Wait until there is less than 30 seconds on the timer and fire your bid.

If it was meant to be, so be it, if not, at least you will walk away knowing you didnt overpay for something. Or pay more than you actually wanted to, not necessarily overpay.

This may not be the best advice for everybody but it has worked for me. Bidding early has never been advantageous in my opinion.
