Possible SRS 3.1

Hello,

Tomorrow I go to look at a pair of what may be SRS 3.1s. The seller didn't know the model. Asking price $300. Since they are in a storage locker with maybe no power I probably will not be able to audition them, although I will bring an amp and my MacBook Pro just in case I can run some iTunes. I can do the press test and check for frozen drivers. I have the SDA Quick Test file but it doesn't list voltmeter values for the SRS 3.1. Does anyone know what they are?

I worry about how they have been stored for the last six months. I imagine it must be well over 100 degrees in the storage locker. All summer. Can this kind of heat cause damage to any of the drivers or crossover?

Is there anything else I should look for? Is this a reasonable price?

Finally, I already have a pair of SDA-1bs to which I have not yet done much work. I have Dynamatted and Mortited, but that's it. My intention has been to replace the SL-2000 tweeter and rebuild the crossover (probably $400). But now I wonder if I can avoid that expense by buying the 3.1 pair. Would the SL-3000 tweeters be due for replacement? Would the crossover rebuild be more costly for the SRS 3.1?

I sure would appreciate any guidance you can give.

Thanks,
Jim

The price is more than reasonable, and the closer to perfect they are the better it gets. I can only guess that the temps inside that locker have been brutal, and maybe exceeding 140 degrees on the hottest days. I too would be concerned about how the heat affected them, and would consider offering less if you find them to be needing a lot of work. Sorry I can't be of any more help than this, but congrats on the find and I wish you the best.

Polk tests all their drivers, etc. for temperature extremes. No worries there.

Hell yeah, the RD0198-1's are much better.

I found the RD-0198 tweeters to be a stunning upgrade over the SL3000's. I expected a modest, subtle improvement - but what I got was a nice surprise!

I believe I remember an informal "opinion poll" on here about the "best" SDA's and if memory serves the general consensus was SDA 2.3TL, 1C's, and 3.1's (close on the last two). It may have been a bang for the buck thing rather than simply a best thing. Regardless, $300 sounds like an amazingly good price even if a little work was needed.

Well, these turned out to be SRS 2.3 with SL-2000 tweeters. Here is the link:
    http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/fud/2523124867.html

They are way too big for my space so I passed and clued the seller in to their real value. It seemed that she really needed to get a fair price for them.

I think the heat may have affected your brain just a touch. The 2.3's for 300 bucks?? walking on those is like walking away from an SL500 for $20.00.

The seller was an unemployed young woman who needed to get a fair price for them far more than I needed a giant pair of speakers. This was my good deed for the year.

Before you all start singing praises to my name, keep in mind that if I really wanted a giant pair of Polks I would have bought them on the spot for $300. All I really did was forego the opportunity to flip them for $700.

Now the next person in need of a cheap pair of SDA's is going to have to pay 400.00 more...

    Thanks.

But for now, her price is still the same it seems. The one's lying on its side. I think they rescued from more than getting a fair price for her.

I'm not sure the speaker is laying on it's side. It looks like the picture is 90 degrees off.
