Just bought Monitor 5 jr speakers w/SL 1000 and they sound like crap - super bright and response sounds poor. Can I drop SL2500 tweeters or other tweeters in these speakers to improve the sound?

nope but you can use SL2000. you may be able to use the sl2500 with some XO mods. You can also call Polk CS and inquire about RDO-194 tweeters they will cost you 48.00ea be sure to tell them you belong to club polk to get the 48buck price.

Why does the Monitor 5 and 5 JR spec page state that SL2500 is the tweeter used? The speakers sound horrible - super bright. Doesn't even compare to the smooth sound of Monitor 10.

Pictures would help. They're several incarnations of the Monitor speaker later designs used different drivers and tweets as well as XO's so those drivers and tweets could be used. If your Monitor 5's came with the sl1000 then I believe some mods will be needed to use the later sl2500. Have you opened them up? are the tweeters mounted on the face and not recessed into the face? Are there fuses on the back? The components in the XO are at the end of their life and a recap and new resistors would help tremendously. Maybe someone fried the original tweets and just stuck in what the had at the time as I stated in the beginning pictures would help.

Back of the tweeters are stamped SL1000 and they fit into the recessed rectangular hole above the mids. Music thru these is unlistenable. These are the speakers:

wall mount kit? Do they have screw holes that go through them? Can you push in the passive radiator and the MW rise and slowly settle back down or does it fall right away? If there is any air leaks in the cabinet they will not sound very good. Is that what you paid for them or is that a sample of what you got? Those will need a XO rebuild.

I forgot about the wall mount. I inserted the screws in the back to seal the cabinet and it doesn't sound a great deal different. Fuses are intact. These will need new crossover design or just replace caps? I'm not going to keep them - probably sell the components. Tweeters are twice as bright as Infinity 7.0 or 8.1 which I've owned.

    new caps and resistors

mills resistors and if you can swing it Sonic caps or Clearity caps.
If you don't plan on keeping then try the Dayton audio 1%ers then all could be purchased at PartsExpress.com In order to use the new RDO-194 tweeters you'd need to enlarge the tweeter rectangler hole a smidgen. They should sound very good after that.
