I have to admit, I really enjoyed listening to the Rolling Stones, Now ! and Between the Buttons. The Rolling Stones, Now ! includes the classic Heart of Stone and was enjoyable as a whole because it had a real Memphis feel that pervaded the album from start to finish. I particularly got a kick out of the song, Down Home Girl. The opening lyrics go, " Lord I swear the perfum you wear was made out of Turnip Greens and everytime I kiss you it tastes like pork and beans." Sorry, I guess I am just attracted to corney lyrics. Between the Buttons included the classics Let's Spend the Night Together and Ruby Tuesday. I also liked the deeper cuts Yesterday's Papers and Connection. The song Something happened to me Yesterday includes a short little monologe from Mick at the end. Makes me wonder if that's how they signed off from their shows back in the old days. Next up is the CD Sticky Fingers. Cheers. :cool:

Slight change of plans. Their Satanic Majesties Request showed up in the mail before Sticky Fingers so I had a chance to give that one a listen. It was the Stones answer to Sgt. Pepper and is an artifact of the time. Dreamy, trippy, weird and a lot less coherent than Sgt. Pepper. I have to say the more I listened the more it grew on me. Classics include She's a Rainbow and 2000 Light Years from Home (IMO). The song 2000 Man I had heard previously, done by some one else. Didn't realize it was a Jagger / Richards.
Next up will be Sticky Fingers. Cheers. :cool:

I like that album, however, clearly, not one of their better moments. On the plus side, it motivated the Stones to quit trying to be "Beatle like" and go back to doing what they do best, basic driving rock n roll.

Sticky Fingers is way above Satanic(IMHO). Brown Sugar,Wild Horses and Dead Flowers are my favs from this set, however, this whole album rocks hard.I believe due to the addition of Mick Taylor. A short lived configuration, but a good one. Also, the original album came with a real zipper to reveal what?

I was George and the zipper is still a "whatever" moment, but the album rocks and the opener one of their best.

Been listening to Sticky Fingers a lot, on a par with the listen I gave to Let it Bleed. I have to say this is my second favorite Stones album behind Let it Bleed (but not by much). The arrival of Mick Taylor saw a welcome infusion of new blood into the band. Brown Sugar, ****, Wild Horses, Can You hear me Knockin' all great. Deeper cuts include Dead Flowers, You Gotta' Move, I got the Blues, Moonlight Mile and a haunting Sister Morphine still also great. Hey wait, maybe it is my favorite Stones album. Next up will be Exile on Main Street which will be in conjuction with the DVD documentary "Stones in Exile". Cheers. :cool:

Maybe I missed it going through this thread, but did anyone mention if the HD Tracks sound better than SACD? I have an Oppo BDP-93 and want to know if the HD Tracks sound the same, better, or not as good as the SHM-SACD's.

So being a huge Stones fan I decided to give HD Tracks a try and downloaded Beggars Banquet (88kHz/24bit).
I also picked up on eBay, Let It Bleed, on SHM-SACD - the 2010 remaster (looking forward to that).

Like most here I have all of my music in electronic format on my computer (actual on a 1TB drive). I normally use iTunes; S/PDIF (coax) out to my Denon. As most probably already know, iTunes doesn't play FLAC directly, so I installed foobar2000 and the optional ALAC decoder for playing Apple Lossless files.

I already have Beggars in .m4a format, originally in 128kbs (.mp3) and then ran the Apple conversion to lossless format. I don't think the conversion did anything but take up more space on my computer (obviously since I started with a highly compressed file).
Side note: I've read about software that claim to "upscale" compressed music by getting the missing information from the internet. I guess I'm too cheap buy something I'm not sure about and thought maybe iTunes does something like that (I don't think it does).

So...using foobar I played Sympathy for the Devil, back to back in Pure Direct mode (on the Denon); HD Track vs. what I already have (.mp3 converted to .m4a). What a difference - wow! I usually don't run Pure mode because the other (processing) modes sound better, but I figured this would be the best way to compare SQ. The original (compressed) file sounded so harsh that it hurt my ear! The HD Track sounds great.

I don't know what master version my original file was made from, as I got it from someone else. So I can't say if the huge difference between files is from the remaster, the higher resolution (than a std. CD), or both. I just know that it sounds great and now I have another area to spend $$$ on...

This installment is on Exile on Main Street and the companion video Stones in Exile. First the video, it tells the story of how in 1971 the Stones departed the UK to take up residence in France. Keith Richards settled at a villa called Nellcote which became the venue for the recording of their masterpiece Exile on Main Street. The film provides interesting background information on the songs from the major players along with some guest commentary. The film is a little dis-jointed IMO and could use a narrator and some more structure. Still a must have for any die hard Stones enthusiast. I enjoyed the cd a lot, definitely one of those albums that is better start to finish than in small pieces, a really great body of work. It includes the classics Happy and Tumbling Dice which seem to mesh really well with the other songs. On Jessie's (F1Nut) advice I avoided the recent (2010) re-master of the CD. Opting for the 1994 release. Next up will be Goat's Head Soup. Cheers. :cool:

Good to see the Stones getting some love here. Hard to name a bigger group that's overlooked more often.

As for collections... the MFSL vinyl box set does me quite nicely.

This installment covers the album Goats Head Soup. I had this album on cassette back when I was in the fifth grade. I had not listened to it in its entirety since that time. The album starts out with the very melodic and deliberately plodding Dancing with Mr D. I never fully understood what they were talking about at the time but I always liked the song. Hearing it again took me back to that space in time. Other cool tunes on this album are Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker), the rocker Star Star (I wonder why it never received more radio airplay) and the ballad Angie. Deeper cuts include 10 years ago, Coming Down Again, Silver Train and Hide your Love. All in all kind of a cool trip back to the early seventies. Next up will be either Balck and Blue or Its only Rock and Roll. Cheers. :cool:

Just finished listening to Black and Blue which saw the arrival of Ronnie Wood. The album is a bit of a departure for the Stones. A little indulgent with some interesting tunes. I really, really liked this album. Hot Stuff, Hand of Fate, Cherry Oh Baby and Memory Motel and the ballad Fool to Cry. Again, some of it not typical Stones material but one of the reasons they lasted so long, not afraid to branch out and take chances. Next up, Its only Rock and Roll ..........but I like it.

Great reviews nap. I just got Exile on Main Street, deluxe remaster. Great album. Now i think i'll have to go on a feeding frenzy to get the rest of the remasters. Your reviews made me remember all the choice goodies that are on these albums. Thanks again, keep it up.

I was sticking with the DSD remasters which came out around 2002, 2003 (I think). I was able to pick these up gently used, rather cheaply off of Amazon Marketplace. Happy Listening. Cheers. :cool:

I have some Rolling Stone remastered CDs, but I have no idea which version they are. Anyway, while I have zero experience with this subject, I have read multiple times that the high-res file versions of these CDs are better than the CDs. However, it is the highest sampling rate versions that are the best, and coincidentally, they also cost the most.

Thanks BlueFox but i'm gonna have to go with nap on this one. Allthough the high-res versions of these may be better. Its not in my nature to pay $30 for something i can't actually hold. I'm thinking about dusting off my turntable and sending it to the repair shop in the future. But for now i think i'll take naps advice and buy used. Thanks for the information nap & BlueFox. This installment covers Its Only Rock N Roll their final album with guitarist Mick Taylor. I found this album to be a very strong outing from the Stones. They open with the upbeat If You Can't Rock Me followed by a rocked up cover of Ain't to Proud to Beg. Generally, with a few exceptions I don't care much for cover songs but the Stones do it up right aided with a guest appearance by Billy Preston. Also featured on this album is the radio staple Its only Rock N Roll, Fingerprint File and Dance Little Sister. Till the Next Goodbye, Luxury and the ballad If you really want to be My Friend round out the lot. Now for the good stuff, this album contains two favorites of mine. My favorite title of a Stones song, "Short and Curlies" and my favorite Stones Song, "Time Waits for No One". The latter of which is my favorite for several reasons 1) The Riff 2) The subject matter 3) Mick Taylor's soaring guitar work and 4) It didn't receive a lot of air play. Next up will be Some Girls. Went to order the Some Girls CD and found that a DVD/Blu Ray "Some Girls Live in Texas 78" was coming out November 21st.

From Amazon - The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that years Some Girls album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the Some Girls album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July the album had hit the No.1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a back to basics approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront and little or no elaborate staging. Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on July 18th, 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with the Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from Some Girls are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums. Originally shot on 16mm film, the footage has been carefully restored and the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes. This is undeniably the Rolling Stones at the peak of their form.

The DVD, it was only like $12 clams or so. A heck of a lot cheaper than concert tickets that's for sure. :cool:

No lie. It cost me $83 for ticket to bridges to babylon tour. And that was in the nose bleed seats. GOOD SHOW. But you add in travel expences , food , drink, parking, after show bar hop. Probebly cost $300 when all was said and done. Good thing i went with my buddies or it would have been double that.

Nap the Mick Taylor era in my opinion was the best I read somewhere that Jagger and Richards did not give Mick credit for a couple of songs off Its only Rock and Roll and he called it quits oh well Jaggers and Richards loss, as Ron Wood was no where near as talented as Mick Taylor do yourself a favor and pick up the Blu Ray of ladies and Gentlemen the Rolling Stones and see for yourself how good Mick was.

Time Waits for No One is an all time fave of mine too and going back to Sticky Fingers so is Sway. Mick Taylor's guitar playing is great.

I have a copy of the Abkco 2002 DSD remaster of Let It Bleed and on the inside of liner notes the songs are listed as follows:
1. Gimme Shelter

7. You Got The Silver

However on the back of the part of the packaging the songs are listed as:

I just picked this up yesterday DVD/CD set. It the concert and the recording of the concert. It is bad **** stones footage and the sound quality is quite good. I highly recommend it.

The pre-release reviews were good. I haven't watched it yet but I will try to get to it this weekend. Been listening to the CD which I like a lot. This album came out when I was in high school so naturally there are a lot of memories there. The set list includes: disco Stones mega hit Miss You, the country foray - Far Away Eyes, the anti-love Beast of Burden, Keith's anthem to the drug bust in Canada - Before They Make Me Run, and a cover of Just My Imagination. Also included are the tracks: Some Girls (which contains Mick's soundbite rundown of women from around the world), Lies, Respectable, and the radio favorite Shattered. Not a loser in the bunch IMO. Next up will be Emotional Rescue and I will try to review the DVD as well. Cheers.

Watched the concert DVD yesterday. I agree with your assessment, if this is not the Stones at the top of their game its darn close. Some of the things I enjoyed about this show were the lack of any production, just straight ahead rock and roll. Also, there was limited dancing around by Mick, hence his vocals were much better than a lot of the other live recordings of the band. I had to laugh when I watched the ABC interview in the extras section and Geraldo Rivera said, "you've been together for 16 years". To think next year marks 50 years, 16 was just child's play. If you are reading this and have any Stones fans on your Christmas list, buy this DVD for them. Cheers. :cool:
