I had to go to Houston this weekend for a field service trip, and I did not want to go home. Yeah, it was hot, but I don't mid that. Most places are well air conditioned, and even though it was 94F I was comfortable in the shade.

I stopped into Blackdog Records, and scored some more vinyl for my growing collection. The store was well stocked, and I found some lp's that I have not been able to find in PA. Awesome!

The food was fantastic! I went to Papa's Barbecue and ate the belly buster Texas platter. That was the biggest pile of meat I've ever had the pleasure to stuff myself with for only $10!!!!!!!!!!!! That together with 2 beers for under $14. It was delicious, and I was so stuffed that I couldn't eat breakfast or lunch the next day.

Oh! I have to mention that the women in Texas are HOT, and not due to the weather!!! I spent a few very entertaining hours in one of Houston's many establisments that feature ........ Well you know ; ) Lets say they were dressed for realy hot weather! Damn! You guys got it all going on!!

Glad you enjoyed it. C'mon down - just don't bring the PA liberal political views and you'll be fine. Oh and just so you know, this is a "right to work state" and unions don't fare well at all. That's how we roll.

Skip, when funds permit you guys should invest in a good AC unit if you think you're gonna be there for a long time. Those builder grade units typically aren't very good.

When we first moved into our Frisco house (2400 sqft, one story, one AC unit built in 2001) our electric bill actually hit $500 one month in our first summer there. That was mostly my fault because I kept it at about 68 degrees all the time and somehow that unit was able to keep up, but it ran nonstop.

During spring going into our second year I replaced that unit with a good Trane unit and the bill never again eclipsed $350.

    Also dude, get some trees!!!

Spent some time in Houston last yr and the yr before that. My stay was the same as yours minus the vinyl. Loved the place and cost of living is fairly good. I was actually thinking of coming back there after Japan, VA would be other choice.

What time of the day was it when it was 94? Midnight. I really enjoyed the 2 years I lived in Texas even if the summers got extremely hot. It seemed like almost every day in the summer it was over 100 by noon.

Plenty of great food from all kinds of ethnicity, very friendly people, mucho adult entertainment, a bunch of professional teams and gigantic stadiums, cheap housing, no state tax, no snow, no tornado (at least in the Houston metropolitan), no earthquake... Well, that's enough for me to stay in this area. But of course the heat is extremely terrible!

That much sq. footage in one story would be great. This place deserves a second unit or at least a much beefier single unit. Yeah, its 2400 sq. ft., but its like cooling 2800+ with all the open air. Our first tactic is to talk to DR Horton and see if the warranty was transferrable. Then, we will get someone out to work on the ducts since the insulation is coming unglued around the unit. Lot of lost cooling there. We've been so busy prepping the house for our son's 2 birthday parties in the first month in the house that we haven't taken care of a few bigger items we need to get on top of.
Well the good thing is we're almost through July, so likely only another month or two of really bad heat, then you have all winter to save up for it :-)

That's what we did, the first year by the time we got that first really high bill we were almost through the summer anyway so we decided to take the extra few months through the winter to save up for a TOTL unit.

My first summer in TX - 1980 in the DFW area - I believe there were 42 consecutive days of +100 deg heat (69 days total with 3 consecutive days of 113 deg). I thought what did I get myself into - haven't looked back since.

It's only 86 right now down here in Granbury. But, we hit over 100 on July2nd (when DFW didn't), so it's been like an additional 20 straight days of 100+.

We keep the temp right at 76 or 77 and my highest electricity bill has been $259 for about 2780 sq feet 1 story with a large media room up. The builder installed a single two-stage unit with electrictonically controlled zones and used foam insulation. My attic is almost completely decked for storage and it will only vary about 8 degrees from the house temp.

Yes it snows (occasioally),Yes they have tornados (urban areas are not immune to them), earthquakes can happen anywhere, and you didn't even mention the "H" word (as in hurricane) or the gang problems.
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

EDIT: Actually, I see now it lists to Washington D.C.'s. One seems to be more humid than the other. So between the two, one has higher humidity, the other is lower.

Average relative humidity in morning / afternoon for the year:
    DC1: 83/55
    DC2: 75/54
    D/FW: 81/59
