Receiver to drive M70's & CS2 in 3.0?

Lots of threads here (including 1 of my own) talk about the power needs of the Monitor 70s.

I am thinking about a setup in my upstairs living room (18 x 20 with vaulted 20+ ceiling) that opens to the kitchen. Thinking a 3.0 setup with M70s and a CS2. Are there any receivers that could drive this setup adequately? Or would I still need an outboard amp?

There are plenty of receivers that can drive that setup just fine. I suggest a Pioneer Elite VSX-52 or VSX-53 will serve you well and if you decide to upgrade to RTIA models , your still in great shape.
The new Pioneer Elite receivers are packed with Apple Features , go here and check them out. In my opinion , nothing sounds better then Pioneer Elite dollar for dollar

Thanks, mantis. The price tag on those Pio Elites is a bit more than what I'm looking for. As this will be a secondary system, I was looking for a bit more of a basic receiver - probably a 5.1 non-3D would do me for this. Hoping to get something on close-out, open-box or refurb.

The main issue is whether any receiver I can buy will be enough power for the M70s. Looks like both of the Elites you recommend are 110 wpc, so I assume this to mean you feel this will be sufficient to drive the M70s in this application.

Also questioned whether I would even need the 70s here (maybe the 60s would work just as well?), but since I was kind of thinking I wouldn't run a separate sub, the 70s would be a bit better.

Without a sub, definately go for the 70's. The monitor line is very easy to drive and pretty much any receiver will drive them. If your going to run 5 speakers though, pay attention to power specs in 5 channel mode. Also if you think you may upgrade the speakers in the future, a receiver with preouts is a must have.

If it doesn't have to have 3d or be brand new you can find a used Onkyo 805 for around $400, or something similar. That'll drive the 70's just fine, it just won't have a warranty.

Whats your budget jay? Heres an option at $250.00 that would drive them, this seller often has eBay listings with make an offer, you could get this one for less, or the next step up for near this price....

Thanks for that link codyc1ark. My budget is a little flexible. My price expectations are a little skewed because I got such a great deal on my Yamaha RX-A800 for my main system.

As this is for (what will become) a secondary system, I'd like to keep it in the $250 - $300 range, all in. And because I am in Canada, getting things across the border is a tradeoff sometimes because you likely get it cheaper, but you have to pay the duty on it, so you need to know your prices.

I love the look of the Elites, so I'll definitely do some net research and keep my eyes open for a deal.
