Our 6 month old has to get a head x ray today...

As some of you may have read from my voting thread, we have 6 month old twins. Since birth Jacob (the oldest one) has had an oddly shaped head (kind of high/broad/and flat in the back). He is also very cranky and fussy all the time and his eyes haven't fully corrected themselves from the baby crosseyed position. Anyway, the doctors have been watching his head and we have made sure to keep rotating it around to try to help.

Well yesterday at the doctor?s appointment when they examined his head the doctor felt that the soft spots might have closed up. She got another doctor to examine his head and they decided to get his head x ray'd today. It is a condition starting with a c that I guess is more common in twin babies. It could be causing his brain not to be able to grow properly.

So today he gets the x ray. Best case scenario the soft spots haven?t closed up all the way and we get him in a custom made helmet right away to help his head correct itself. If the soft spots have closed then they will have to do surgery and cut his skull apart to reshape it.

Sorry to unload on you guys like this, but my wife and I are both very worried right now (as I?m sure any parents would be).

Anyone ever go through anything like this?

What they said ^^^, I think the condition is from the way the embryo's separated in the womb, the spot they were joined at was probably that region of the skull, was there any ultrasounds to confirm this? Anyway, good thoughts from AZ for little Jacob, my crystal ball says he's gonna be just fine!

I know what condition you are talking about but I can't remember the name either. Years ago, it used to be a pretty bad prognosis. Now, not so much. If they act early, they can correct it with a fairly good success rate. However, any surgery on infants is risky. With that said, I can't say I have experience with it. I know someone who went through it themselves but we parted on bad terms so I can't put you in contact with them. I do know the kid turned out healthy with minimal side effects from the whole ordeal. He and his brother are both 10 years old now and seem to be doing well according to a mutual acquaintance we have.

I'll keep you and your family in my prayers and hope for the best!

My sister-in-law has twin girls. One of them has a similar head shape you described and they did pay extra attention to it. They discussed the helmet thing but never ended up having to do anything. They are almost 18 months now and you can still see the shape of her head is not what would be considered the normal round shape (although it is not visibly deformed either. You would have to be specifically looking for it I think), but there does not seem to be any ill effects. Both girls are doing very well.

I will try to find out more details next time I talk to my in-laws.

Hope all goes well! Also consult with your physicians to make sure the little guy is exposed to as little radiation as possible. I think MRIs might be preferable there, but I'm no expert.

My prayers to your family man and keep the faith!
My son was born with a Port Wine Stain that covers most of one side of his face.3 hours after birth they took him for a cat scan and told us he could be brain damaged.
That came back inconclusive so time would tell.
We then spent the next month going from "specialist" to "specialist" and they were telling us it was Sturge Weber Syndrome.Another nasty deal for sure.I won't go into details.
Eventually we ended up at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore where the Doctor scoffed at the previous diagnosis and told us we just need to deal with the birthmark with laser surgery and he would otherwise be fine.We didn't believe him.It sounded too easy after everything we had just gone through.
We started the laser surgeries the following week.and that SUCKED!! He is now almost 16 and goes every few months for maintenance laser surgeries and he takes it like a man.400+ zaps to the face every time.
Anyway,He is now an Honor student in a great private High School and is working on his Eagle Scout as we speak.
My point is...lots of worry and stress and prayers you cannot avoid but all you can do is be there for him and get him the best care you can.
My son gets stared at all the time and will all his life but with our support he is not lacking in self esteem and now just blows it off instead of letting it eat at him.
If anything it put my life in a much better perspective as to how fragile life is and it made me a better father than i think i would have ever been if everything was "normal"
    just my 2 cents.
    Stay strong man.
I know it's not the same but it sure feels like you are feeling what i felt back then.
May God Bless you and your family.
