Morning guys,
First i'd like to wish you and yours a happy and safe 4th w/ all the trimmings. Now for my question. I have my Klipsch rears set at a height of 6ft
and towed in towards the center of the couch about 30*.At first I was not getting the effects that is promised w/ a system like I have but fine tuned them to be higher in vol then the fronts and still not detracting from the center. I think now things are dialed in but Iam always curious of what others are doing .So is there a true definition of height for your rears or just if they happen to be on end tables or true ceiling mounted fireing down what is the concencuss. Also if you guys are not aware all the speakers are the same size except of course the sub and center.

The height is not relevent because of every room being different. You have to play around with the height in your own environment to see what works for your ears. Mine are only 4.5 feet off the floor, partially because of room layout, partially because of the wife.

I think rears within a 5.1 system should have the tweeters close to ear height, or 2-3 ft. above ear height....within a 7.1 as long as they are aimed toward the seating area, you should be OK. I have OWM3s for rears within a 7.1 mounted in the ceiling corners due space constraints, and they sound good to me. Like Tony said, space and room considerations will determine the best setup.

Polk suggests that six to seven feet is normal... I don't know what Klipsch recommends.:smile:

Mine are about 5 and a half feet up but angled down in their mounts. I use these: http://www.sonicboomaudio.com/btech-bt77-side-grip-speaker-brackets-p-22.html Could probably find them cheaper but they work great.

Yes, I've got a pair of RTi4s mounted with those - excellent brackets! However, I think the OP has a set of small satellite speakers, so he'll probably not be needing something so substantial.

Room constraints definitely will force some compromises from an ideal set up.

My HT room is not deep, has windows on the back wall and on the right side - had to mount my RTi4s from the ceiling:

Works pretty good, not perfect....but - sometimes you gotta compromise.

Exactly! Gotta work with what you've got! That's a tough layout, Erik, but it seems you made it work.

My rears are LSi15s without stands sitting directly on the ground. They are too close to my rear row of theatre seats due to space limitations, and are poorly angled as well. The height is not ideal - they are too low - because the rear row sits on as platform that is about 12 inches tall. I might be able to alleviate some of the issues (too close and angled) with the replacement of my old RPTV which would allow the seating to move forward at least 2 feet, but this won't solve the height issue.

When we move, one thing I would like to do is build a dedicated theatre room that has none of my current problems. At first I thought I would have platforms built for each LSi15 to further elevate the speakers, but then I thought I would just place them on large sturdy subwoofers.

But since listening to my dad's music studio, I have been having second thoughts about using the LSi system in a dedicated theatre room. Frankly, his pro-audio gear sounds awfully good (and loud).
Do you hear that buzzing noise?

With surround speakers the height can be important but perhaps not so much as the direction they are pointed. Surround should never be pointed directly at the listener where the sound can be "localized" to a particular point. Content in the surrounds should be diffuse which is why dipoles have the null facing the listener. With non-dipoles the speaker should be angled upward toward the ceiling if possible - or to the side (rear) if not possible.

As with any of this however, it ultimately boils down to whatever makes you happy.

I would like to experament w/diff heigths but one side goes down a hall and the other is a where the front door is , so both are 8 feet up in the cornor facing where I sit , I am sure there is a more dffuse sounding solution but I havent found it yet .
maybe a multiple driver on a curved face with a driver facing downward ??
but all I tried was booksheves 13" or shorter or else the door hits them :(

What works best in a ideal room is 6 feet to the tweeter.
