Wanted a cheap PC desktop or laptop

REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Im not particular on what it is, it will be used for web surfing and emails etc is all my old PC was a 7 yearl old dell dimension 2400 single core 2.4OGZ 40GB hardrive and I was happy with it till it died this morning so something similar or better would be fine. The cheaper the better

I would watch Tech Bargains dot com for close-out non-Sandy Bridge Dell Vostro 220 / 230.

They have been as low as $269 + tax (no monitor) and even the newest Dell Vostros with LCD are sometimes on sale for $400 + tax.

Might want to wait to see what Fourth of July sales show up tomorrow, and I think (not sure) new Dell deals show up on Tuesdays.

Dell deals are pretty decent. Are you capable of building one yourself? You can build a pretty good pc sans gaming. I see tiger direct deals for like $299 pretty often. This is like a quad core, 8 gbs of memory and a tb drive. Case and all.

    Rear - RTiA3's
    Center - CSiA4

That Dell isn't worth repairing at any cost. You could buy another one like it off Craigslist for $50 with a monitor around here, and the processor and video are getting too slow for even basic tasks like browsing websites with lots of Flash or video.

I'd probably see what I could get with a dual core CPU for around $100 on Craigslist. Reinstall Windows (you can use the disc and key from your Dell if needed) and you'e good to go.

What died? I had about the same machine, a couple years newer. The power supply died. Looked at New Egg and for $25 I bought a power supply and the unit is back up and working. I use it for my music server running the Squeezebox application.

    Worth a try

Thanks for the suggestions guys, im not sure what died Brock I know the fan quit working so there was a thermal shutdown so I cleaned everything up and went into bios and cleared the previous alerts but now it refuses to re start.

I have a PC coming, an HP workstation not sure of the model # it is a quad core from what I understand with windows XP installed so in a week or so I should be up and running again. I may keep an eye out for another Dell so I can use the hard drive from the one that died and retrieve all my old files and info.

I see, with mine I came home and the computer was off, never to power up again until I took a shot in the dark that it might be the PS. I figure for $25 it was worth a shot, it worked out in my case.

If this PC wasnt so old bought new in 2004 and it wasnt so cheap to buy a working one I would start replacing parts, I know I need a new fan + perhaps a power supply by the time I bought them + shipping it would cost more than if I bought a working identical Dell PC. I feel like I got more than my moneys worth out of the one that died it was only $150.00 after a rebate and lasted 7 years.
