Guys,, I just got these,,put one in the Dared and one in the Cornet,,same issues with both tubes,,I pulled one out of the Dared just to take some pic's for the upgrade thread, and I found this brown goo on the tube and circuit board,,nothing appeared burned,,so I thought I would take the other one out of the Cornet,,here's the pic's.Both units work fine, the "goo" appears to be coming from the tubes,, any thoughts, experiences,, innaresting ain't it.Maybe I'm too anal and need to get a life.
The source appears to be the tube,,center pin and the two small holes in the base.

George, were these sold to you as NOS or used pulls from period gear? Perhaps it came from whatever gear it was previously in or perhaps from where the tubes were stored. I have a 6106 and it's not an issue. Since they came from the same seller at the same time perhaps it's how/where they were stored.
Does it seem to be oozing from the inside of the base? There are 3 holes plus a center pin hole, I bet something spilled in there and now when it heats up (they get pretty hot) it's liquifying and oozing on your gear.
I'd contact the seller if it's a lot of goo, if not maybe you'll have to clean up a few times until it stops oozing. I don't think it would be anything other than some foreign matter that got in there. I've done a lot of reading about the 6106 and no one has mentioned this issue in any of those discussions. The Bendix tubes were made to such a high standard, anal standard, I can't imagine it being a defect.
The 6106, unlike other 5Y3 rectifiers can be mounted upside down in gear so if they were used pulls perhaps it was mounted upside down and something found it's way into the base holes. Did you smell it? Taste it? Try to grease your hair with it?

Thats why I posted here--smells like old electronics',, damn good observation on the upside down possibility--I'll ask the seller for any history,,right now I've got em in the tube tester,, cooking em' up--I'll report back .JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Might want to try some mineral oil to clean it up, followed by De-oxit. Never seen that before, George.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

Here is what I know so far,, 1956 Bendix-- tubes were purchased by GE/Aircraft Gas Turbine Division,,Cincinnati,15 Ohio(before the 5 digit zip,,,the boxes are stamped "QC BA 107 "(Boeing),,they test new in my tube tester,,these things have an innaresting history,,here's an excerpt regarding the MIG 25 Foxbat
The aircraft's true capabilities were not discovered until 1976 when Viktor Belenko, a Soviet MiG-25 pilot, defected to Japan. Subsequent analysis revealed a simple-yet-functional design with vacuum-tube electronics, two massive turbojet engines, and sparing use of advanced materials such as titanium. The MiG-25 series had a production run of 1,190 aircraft. The MiG-25 flew with a number of Soviet allies and former Soviet republics and it remains in limited service in Russia and several other nations.JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut) -
My box, printed in old typewriter font, says:
JAN-CEA-6106
MFD BY BENDIX AVIATION CORP
DATE PKD 8/59
The tube has the Bendix logo and the number 852 on it.

Here's and interesting article from VTV

Someday when I have an extra $300-400 lying around I want to try a quad of Bendix 5992's in place of my 6V6's "Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Be careful, military stuff has a history of going BOOM.

Bendix tubes are BADA$$, period! So over engineered and ridiculously over built. They are just fun to look at even if you don't have any gear that can use them"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. They are wicked looking. I've referred to the Bendix as the Rectifier from Hell. I harvested this killer image of a 6106 from Rich and use it in my wallpaper rotation.
Ironically, IIRC, that is a photo of the Bendix in the Hagerman Rich built for Carl which George now owns.

I think that's the pic of the Bendix in Carl's Cornet that Rich built.A great phono pre,,I would like to say--outstanding build quality too.
Thank you sir,,and thank you Rich and Carl. I had the pleasure of meeting up with Carl and listening to his rig,,IIRC he has an Audio Reasearch PH-3,,which is just dead quiet and sounds stellar to boot.Fortunately,,he kept the Kraken at bayJC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut) -

Ok heard back from the seller-- he states that he picked up a batch of these some years ago when he was in the aerospace business--he states that they are NOS/NIB,,and they test that way on my tester,,now for the goo,,apparently from sitting on the shelf for 50 plus years a little 'gunk" built up in the three small holes on the base of the tube,,I cleaned them up/out,and sure enough,,a little brown goo came out,,I've since cleaned, tested and re-installed them. Brown goo mystery solved.
BTW-- well built tubes,,no runs, drips or errors.JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)
