My flippin power went out.:eek::mad:
Funny how cruising around in my air conditioned F-150 at 16 mpg seemed like a better option than hanging out around the house.
At least it was only three hrs.

Did you hear what happened? I came home from work and the grocery store and the power was out at Shannon & Overton.
Gotta love a "cooling trend" later this week of 104-106...

It is hot, but grid problems....I doubt it. TEP's system was under threat from the Wallow Fire earlier this month but those threats have subsided considerably. TEP has also brought a ton of solar online without retiring any baseload or other fossil generation facilities. They also have tons of peaking units scattered all over town, enough to have covered any Wallow Fire-related outages over 1,000MW.
Planned outages to due to loadshifting, typically only run 15-30 minutes per circuit and rotate around. Lots of planning goes into deciding which circuits get dropped for a few minutes and which stay on.
That being said, it may be an overload, just not of the broader grid. Maybe an elbow in a switching cubicle or cabinet wasn't terminated properly or a squeeze-on burnt up on the overhead somewhere.....

105F out the other week, and it hailed tennis ball sized hail, for 15 minutes straight.
The sun never went away either.

my ac went out for half the day yesterday. almost called Hamstra heating and cooling but ended up in touch with a guy close to me that made a house visit on a Sunday and got me up and running (for now) after a couple hours troubleshooting and drinkin' beers atop my roof. almost went up with my shirt off but have a sunburn from the weekend previous and it was the better choice to go up with a white t-shirt.
don'tcha just love taking a cold shower in luke-warm water?

Buy a cheap gasoline generator & a big-assed swamp cooler for emergencies. My folks used to live on E. 2nd.St near Speedway & Country Club, those temps can kill ya out there!

it's been so dry this year that the swamp would work great. i didn't turn mine on this year because it's finally starting to rust away. i do however have a portable one for the porch and it kicks ****. well, until monsoons start.

I swear summer in the desert is like winter in New England - you're miserable spending ore than a few minutes outside, and if your climate control dies for more than a few hours you're in trouble. If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Yeah, a pool at anything above 85 degrees just doesn't feel refreshing. But it helps for late night skinny dippin' since the pool retains enough heat.

It was 104* at my last track day. Yay for full leathers...that are all black...with a black helmet...and black gloves...FML.
It was still fun as hell though...had to drink a s@#t ton of water the entire week just to prepare for that one day...haha. Next one is this weekend, supposed to 'only' be 97*, but I'm going Saturday and Sunday.
But our humidity, even though we're all in a huge drought, it still averaging 50-60% since we're a few hours from the gulf.

Why not get gear that... you know... is'nt black? Or some of that synthetic mesh s@#t they sell? I know it's not cheap, but small price to pay for not being miserable.
The folks who insist on never riding their bikes (obviously on the track is a different story) without having FULL gear ... I just don't understand. If it's 93 degrees and I wear anything with sleeves I'm uncomfortable, let alone heavy riding gear. How do you enjoy it if you're uncomfortable the entire time?If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

You'll enjoy it a lot more when you come off, if your skin isn't being ripped off on 120* pavement. :cool:Ludicrous gibs! -

Yeah yeah yeah mom, i've heard it all before. The fact remains that if the act of riding is miserable just for the sake of safety, I'd just as soon take my car.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

Its only miserable when your not moving. I've ridden in 98 (in humid GA) with perforated leather jacket, mesh pants, full face helmet, leather gloves, and leather calf high boots. The only thing that was uncomfortable was my feet.
One of the tricks is to wear an underarmour type shirt and shorts to help wick away sweat. It also keeps the riding gear from chaffing you. With that type of fabric next to your skin, any air movement helps cool you significantly. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

Because any other color besides white doesnt match my bike, and white gets dirty too easily
Mesh isn't allowed on the track and textile is only allowed in the beginner level. I have all mesh gear for commuting though.
And I really don't feel the heat when I'm on track to be perfectly honest. It's hard to explain, but you'll feel the effects of the heat (fatigue, etc), but I don't really feel the heat. The suit I bought used and it was a great deal. My next one will have white in it. The gloves don't really affect me...I'm not entirely sure a white helmet would help any more since there's the padding that separates me from the outside of the helmet.
It's when I get in the paddocks that I feel the heat.
As far as commuting goes, I'll do it year round as long as its not raining or ice on the roads. So anywhere from 25*-110* which is about our range of temperatures here. I have a few stop lights, but I'm never sitting in traffic other than those stop lights. Even if full gear (regular clothes + mesh jacket/pants, boots, helmet, full leather gloves) it's not terrible, even at 105* heat and 50% humidity. I still enjoy riding. If my truck got mileage my bike does, I'd be more tempted to taking the truck every now and then on those hot/cold extremes, but 40mpg vs 13 mpg...I'll stick with the bike and save the money (which, ironically, tends to get put back into the bike...haha)
-CodyMusic is like candy, you have to get rid of the rappers to enjoy it -
ha, yeah, the swing for me is 50-60MPG on the bike to 30MPG in the Subaru, so at least taking the car sometimes doesn't KILL me.
Of course, I hate riding on the highway on the bike so I'll generally take a longer back-roads route, which likely negates a big chunk of that MPG gain. But going to work is actually fun on those daysIf you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

110 degrees in Illinois?? Are you adding up days or something?
Mid-90's is quite enough in VA. The humidity is ridiculous here, so breathing when it's 90+ degrees is a challenge...2007 Club Polk Football Pool Champ

I think so, the highest weather.com says is 97* for the last 2 months. Heck, they've only had (8) 90* days in the last 2 months. We've had that in the last 9 days (we had an 85* day last week when it rained...that's rare for us, both parts--80* AND rain...haha)

Sweat washes off, road rash does not. In a lot of ways you're better off wearing full gear in the heat and sun since it is actually protecting you from the elements. I have full mesh gear for hotter days. Last summer I went for a day ride on one of hottest days of the year (105). Coming back on the interstate I passed a couple on a Harley. They had skull cap helmets, no gloves or jackets, wearing sandles and shorts. Even though I was quite warm in my mesh gear, I can only imagine how miserable they were. Sun and wind burn from being totally exposed to the elements. Plus the addition of the radiant heat coming off the road. They were in for a wold of hurt the next day. I also wear a camel pack for longer rides.
105 degrees might not seem like much to some folks, but here in the pissy Pacific Northwest it's a bit warm for us. I didn't mind it so much, but many other people thought the world was ending. -

After around 10 years I finally got my AC fixed. I had to since I have two amps in the two-channel system, and they run class A and then switch to class B. These things get hotter than hades. In the winter this is a good thing, but in the summer I close my windows so I do not disturb the neighbors when listening to music. So, I have been suffering the last few years, and I couldn't take it anymore. Now, I am going to have $500 electric bills. :eek:Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

2 years ago this month my AC went out during a 100-degree heat wave in SD.
The fan was working, but the compressor had spewed its contents on the inside of my AC.
Seems like every brand I researched there were complaints of various sorts - ended up with a Goodman and a 5yr waranty from the contractor who installed it....crossing my fingers....
