Hey guys...first post, but this forum has already paying dividends.

Here's the story - My wife bought me a USB turntable because I had been talking about loading my old vinyl to the laptop. That was the first domino. I also had an old Pioneer component system sitting in the closet. Given to me by her brother about 12 years ago, it had spent the good part of 20 years in storage. Well, need a stand (domino #2) and speakers (#3). Scored a decent looking stand for $70, off of CL, and hooked up a pair of cheap Sonys just to make sure everything worked (it does).

Now comes the fun part. I set about looking for something a little more vintage to replace the Sonys, and yesterday picked up what I think is a pair of SDA-2As. They have the single vertical tweeter, two mids, and came with the original blade/blade IC cable. The cabinets are nicked up, but pretty air tight per the push test I found out about here. Again, CL...$125. Good deal?

Everything sounded great with the SA9500II Pioneer integrated amp until I played Pink Floyd's Sheep off of Animals. There is a tone about 20 seconds in that results in a pronounced scratching from the left channel outer mid. Any ideas? This is the only issue I've heard so far.

Anyway here's a pic of "our" new set-up. Less than three bills if you don't include the Lava lamp that the wife HATES.

    Welcome to Club Polk!

Don't know what to say about the speaker problem...did it do anything with the previous Sonys? Did you try other source material (other than vinyl, that is?).

I'd say switch out some speakers and try a few different sources to determine if its your amp or the speakers. If its the amp...it might just need a bit of DeOxit to renew and restore its speaker terminals, vol. pots, and RCA input/outputs?

If not, a few SDA masters will be around to take this up shortly. I have a set of SDA 2Bs and have never experienced what you're describing, they are 'stock', no mods and quite old.

Really NICE set up. Love the Pioneer vintage gear!

Welcome! Nice rig and nice score... I'd say the 2A's are definitely worth $125, but it does sound like maybe you've got a bad dimensional driver. I guess from a diagnostic perspective you could move that driver around and see if the scratching follows it. All the MWs in the 2A's are the same so you don't have to worry as much about where you move it to, just keep track of polarity in the hookups when moving them around.

Thanks for the welcome guys. The problem was not apparent while the Sonys were hooked up, so it looks as if swapping around the MWs is in order. Does the IC effect the outer or the inner MWs? (n00b question)

Mrs. Crabapple? Is that you? lol

I had originally written "is the effect heard...", but reworded before posting. Thanks for the info though.

Actually they could be early 2B studio's, I don't think Polk put out a Studio version of the 2A's. The way to tell is to see if they have the single board style crossover with MW6503 & MW6511 mid drivers, The 2A's will have MW6510 mid drivers. $125 I'd say that a great deal especially if there 2B's

I had all most the same thing with my 1C's, it turned out to be the dreaded magnet shift it had come completely off the driver. You should replace it with an original if you can find one. I would start looking now because the original MW6510 (2A) & MW6511 (2B) are hard to find.

Welcome to the Club! I think Gimpod might be right on them being studio 2B's. I have never seen 2A's like that but you never know. Either way, great score!

studio 2B's would be pin/blade right?
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

The first early 1987 versions were blade/blade with the single board style crossover.

This afternoon's troubleshooting went better than I expected, or worse depending on your point of view. Pulled the cover and played Sheep to verify the cone was not doing anything that seemed out of the ordinary during the offending section, and......nothing. No scratching, no static, nothing but pure Floyd goodness. I couldn't make it recur, period. Oh well. I'm now thinking the IC cable may be the culprit. The cable looks to be pulled slightly from both connectors, and I had just coiled the excess cable before this occurred. Weird that every other track played fine though.

Turns out the wife Swiffered around the speakers today says she "may" have bumped the cable.

I was basing the 2A assumption on another thread that came up in a search to figure out what they were. Something about the bottom of the cabinet?

So, not being able to leave well enough alone, I pulled the driver.

The tag on the back of this driver says...

    6511
    SDA 2B
    APRIL281988

There you have it. Thanks much for the expertise, guys. Time to spin some vinyl.

Welcome to CP! Love your set up and the lava lamp.

That stand it is sitting on......looks like a possible DIY sub build to me.

It'd make one heck of a Bazooka tube, huh? It's actually one of those fiberglass planters like you used to see in the mall, turned upside down. My SIL used to work at a place that made them. I have a twin that's coming out just soon as I find one of those balls with the lightning inside. I figure if the wife wants to divorce me over a couple lamps after 27 years, well......I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
