    Job loyalty....

Doesn't mean much anymore. Look what happened when Orange County Choppers hired a shop forman instead of giving it to Vinny. Vinny was so upset that he had to leave. Did Senior or Jr. care?, Nope.

Then look what happened to the original OCC and then the family.

    Karma...will prevail everytime.

I stopped watching that show after they did that to Vinny. 2 yrs. now or so I haven't cared about OCC, but I did catch where Jr. is doing his thing with "JR custom designs" but has Vinny and Cody helping like in the good ol days. That was nice to see.

Everybody can be replaced is the phrase.
I've seen so many people jet replaced by others who can't do 1/2 of what the previous people were capable of. But that's just fine in the eyes of the ignorant bosses or owners who think they can just wave their hands and say , oh well, I'll just hire another.

I saw someones replacement last night at a store and what a joke. The new person was 1/5 on many levels of who they replaced. Paid the same but does 1/5 as well. Corporate America at work there to. Sad..
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

As a general rule I'm pro-owner, but this decision was just plain stupid and wrong. Yep, I'm guessing it will come back to haunt them and they will really end up having to cut their staff hurting even more or their employees.

There are FMLA laws in this country which protect people from this type of thing. BUT, you have to request FMLA before it is granted by the employer.
The Manager of this employee should have informed her employee of this option when he first approached her.
With my employer, it is SOP when an employee comes to their Manager with this type of situation to hand the employee the FMLA request form and copy of FMLA policy...this is just good business / labor relations.
It is also no conincidence that my employer has been on the Top 100 employer ranking for many years now.

it is sad to hear of stories like this, but it tends to paint all employers with a broad brush and I would wager that for every sad story like this there are a few to counter it. Example: it's no secret that I work part time at Best Buy to pay my *&$#@* ex-wife her money, but my oldest son also works there and is the Supe for the Geek Squad. On December 1, 2010 his oldest son was coming home from work and slid through a stop light and dwas hit by a semi...he was critical for two weeks and then transfered to a rehab center after that. Because my son hadn't been there that long he only had acquired about three days of paid leave, but BB has a corporate policy that allows employees to "gift" their acrued time off. The managers of the store "gifted" my son 6 weeks of paid time off so he could be with my grandson through his entire in hospital rehab stay...Make fun of BB as much as you want but I will forever be thankful for this "benefit" and the people in the Mishawaka Indiana store for their generosity.

haynesmanagement.com is down, but google caches pages so I looked at a stored copy of their homepage and found 781-235-4300 is their phone number.

    http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:vqSYsYpqhskJ:www.haynesmanagement.com/+contact+site:haynesmanagement.com&cd=9&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&source=www.google.com

When the receptionist answered, "Haynes Management", I politely asked if she knew their website was down. She said yes and that they are working on it.

I asked her, "Is it down because of Carl?".

There was a long stunned silence before she said no, and then asked if there was anything else I needed.

I said no and ended the call.

FMLA only applies to employers that have over 50 employees. The accounting firm is apparently under 50 employees. That is why the article said he didn't have any legal recourse.

In any case. This is 'harsh' treatment. Having grown up in what used to be Industrial Pa. I have little good to say about 'management' and 'owners' so unlike some of you, I almost never side with the owner unless it can be shown that said owner has some compassion and concern for the 'humans' who are his workers. They are not just tools or objects of 'business' I'm afraid.

But working class America has always been a semi-functional place even in good times! The fact that the responses above are fairly uniform does give one some hope that we can reach agreement about a few things across our divides!

And that is a start. I can't see how ANYONE can blame this couple for anything. But I have NO doubt there is a politician out there who can argue for cutting their benefits! And that's just SAD!

I wonder if his wife was under his employers health insurance plan or not.
    *
What a lot of people don't realize is that most large companies self-insure their programs, and the medical expenses of their employees and their dependents are expensed dollar for dollar from the company's financials.* In this arrangement, United Healthcare and Aetna merely administer the account.* If this is your typical large accounting firm, its likely that his employer is on a self-funded plan.* You can imagine the costs involved with a person going through treatment for stage iv cancer. Easily several hundreds of thousands of dollars.
    *
In the past couple of years employee benefit costs has become a pretty hot button for a lot of a our clients at work, and we?ve been focusing more heavily on employee benefits in the consulting we do recently....particularly with healthcare reform being*passed and the financial turmoil companies are*still wading through.* I won?t go into any details, but I?ve seen some ugly things go on behind the scenes.*

I took a week off when my wife had major surgery (not that I think any surgery isn't major). When I got back, I was told they were letting me go unless I could find another department willing to take me in the midst of a hiring freeze. Nice.

Word on the streets is that Haynes Management also told the unemployment office that Carl Sorabella quit and was not fired. Can this be verified?

Man, I hope this isn't the case for the company or Carl and his wife.

Why would any business not do this exact same thing? It makes complete sense from business point of view. This woman's bills are going to cost a fortune and the business saw an opportunity to avoid paying their part. Smart move, now the company can stay profitable and keep the other employees employed.

Its completely legal (different rules apply to larger companies) and a brutal example of the ups and downs of capitalism. Sometimes you are just unlucky in life and totally screwed, even if you work hard and are a decent person.

    Sucks to be them.

Bingo. "Profitability is more important than 'life' itself! And you wonder why there is so much lying, graft and corruption in the business world.

With ethics like these 'anything is possible as long as 'money' is made.

Sheeesh. Is there any responsibility even shame left in this country? I guess not.

How about some 'right to life arguments here?'

    Ciao!
