hey there!

My name is Zach and I've been dabbling in HT for a few years now, I am 22 and have much to learn. I got this disease from my dad who has a full Krell HT setup, seeing as I don't have that much cash laying around, I just put together a full polk HT system. My last set of towers was an old pair of RT800's that finally gave up the ghost. I'm moving across country from Seattle to Virginia and starting my career, so I thought I would get my new APT set up right (on a budget of course)

What I have- Aquos 46" 1080P
BDP-S250

What I ordered
(2) Monitor 70's for the fronts
(1) CS-2 Center
(1) PSW-505 for sub duty
A set of OMW3's for surrounds
Denon AVR-2112CI
Belden Speaker cable terminated by yours truly

All in a 1000 sq ft apartment, so I will have to keep volumes moderate or my neighbors may just gang up against me

How'd I do??

You did pretty darn good for a starter setup. I started out with Monitor 60's, CS2 & Monitor 40's driven by a Integra DRT 5.9 in my apartment. I think you will be happy for sure starting out....but if you stay here too long you will be jumping into the RTi line and a dedicated amp (if you have pre-outs)

I went from my small setup to LSi 15's, LSiC, Infinity Primus 162 setup powered by a Carver 5 channel dedicated amp connected to my Integra

Oh I know, there will be significant upgrades once I start making some real money in 4 years. I think I'll be going PSB on the speakers though (been a huge fan for awhile)

The 2112CI has a front preout if I ever wanted to amp the fronts but I probably won't be doing that

And I'll be moving to VA Beach

    Welcome to Club Polk!

I run a system with M70s and a CS2 up front and a doorstop of an Onkyo AVR (130/7 channels, 9.5 amp draw).

I also own an older Denon AVR 2807 (110 W/7 or a 6 amp draw). It weighs about 31 lbs. 20 less than the Onkyo?

You have a nice system there. But be warned that Denon has been cheaping out their AVRs over the years, so I might suggest a higher model.

Let's look at a comparison. The Denon AVR 1909 was over 25 lbs., it drew 5.2 amps from the wall, was rated the 'same' as yours at 90 W/7 channels. Your 2112 (basically a lighter weaker 1900 series) weighs 3 pounds less and draws about 3.92 amps from the wall?).

The pre-outs you speak of are actually outputs for Zone 2.

Sometimes Zone 2 outputs don't let you use 'digital' sources?

If you already have the 2112 ordered that's OK. But I'd really think about stepping up two models on Denons!

    Otherwise, nice system.

You will want those 7.1 pre-outs eventually.

I would try and stay on Dad's good side.

Indeed. His setup is pretty trick (certainly not the best Krell stuff though). Home Theater standard Preamp and Amp, Res 1's, matching center and sub. Truly awesome sounding speakers.

Any recommendations on an amp other than the 2112ci? I was also looking at the RX-V867BL, HK AVR2600, or I might still be able to swing the RX-A1000 or HK AVR-3600.

My last receiver was a HK avr-235 and I loved it to death but the lower power ratings comparatively scares me away from them now. Any suggestions on the A1000 vs the 3600 if I was to fork over the extra money?

Sounds like a plan. I don't know much about the new line of Yamahas. I hear they've tried to address the 'brightness' of their previous sub 1000 models?

But if you like the Harman Kardon sound, which I do myself. I think it would sound great with your speakers! The 3600 has almost everything you need, including the pre-outs. M70s benefit from a little extra power in two channel.

Don't be worried about the HK power ratings because it's probably a little more powerful than the 90 watt Denon! HK is one manufacturer that gives you truer all-channel power ratings. I doubt the Denon puts out even 40 watts or so per channel to all 7?

The HK also has more 'heft' to it. It's more like a Denon 3312, IMO.

The only problem you're left with is that the HK does not have HDMI 1.4 for 3D TVs? You'd have to get the newer HK 3650 for that, if it matters to you.

AHHHHHH you guys already have me spending more money lol. The 3600 is a full 10 pounds heavier than the DENON, and i do love the modern look of the HK's (always have). The a1000 i'd have to still buy the 100 dollar yamaha Ipod adapter so that adds up to even more.

Good news is the speakers are already sitting here, can't make me spend more money on different speakers! I was about to pull the trigger on the 2112ci until I head that. I messed with one inside of BB (not hooked up unfortunately) and I though it felt oddly "cheap" and light for 650 bucks.

I am actually now leaning towards the Yamaha, the reviews make the HK seem ancient. Audioholics basically put it on blast in their 1k receiver challenge, while the Yammy took the cake.

Just got back from BB. I forgot about the 3312CI. So back to the decision board. Price is a wash because I'd have to spend the 100 to get the Yammy dock while the denon I can plug my ipod directly in or just use Airplay. The Denon has the technology on its side, the Yammy is an obvious win in aesthetics for me. I'm not sure I'd really use airplay all that much if I can control the connected ipod via remote, seems airplay just won't be all that reliable of a transfer source.

    Decisions Decisions.

I've got my eye on the A1000, too. BB recently lowered the price on the A800 by $150. Maybe something soon on the 1000? Btw, a local BB here has an open-box unit for $699. I'm tempted!

Take a good listen if you can. BB does have some Polk stock so see if those boys and girls will let you hook some Polks up to your choices. Also bring some of your music with you for testing.

I am 'really' interested on your take on the 'new' Yamahas. I know the HK will sound fine (if they still have those). Yamahas have been too 'bright' and forward for me, personally. By that I mean those models that are in the sub $1000 dollar MSRP class. The more expensive Yammies have always had a slightly different sound signature--that was more pleasing.

Hopefully, Yamaha has decided to 'trickle down' some of that to the lower series in their latest 'reboot'.

    Have fun!

Best advice is (assuming they both have pre-outs) buy recievers for video features over wattage and buy dedicated amps for wattage .

So if you can get the AVR w/ the video features you want and pre-outs you can always augment the wattage with a 2, 3, or 5 channel amp (thought I would recommend a 3 channel max for your setup)...

Enjoy the ride (I know I have so far :smile)!

I listened to a few receivers last night but the store was closing so I didn't putt around too much. The A1000 wasn't hooked up but I listened to the a800 instead along with the 2212ci and 3312ci. The a800 sounded quite good to me, the differences were almost indeterminable on the 800/2212 while the 3312 added better high volume performance. All listening was done through Energy CF70's in a not so ideal setup but they sounded great to me. I'm gonna give a few of the pioneer elites a listen to as they have some greatly reduced open box VSX33's and higher end models.

On side note, I listened to some ESL8's which were another speaker I was seriously considering and I was in awe. But in the end I am glad I spent my money smartly on this setup and didn't blow everything, that will come later in life

I know what you mean. But I spend my real cash on the two channel system which is in a separate room. That way you can keep the HT system longer and not have to worry about its musical limitations?

There are a number of people here who have MartinLogans.

Energys are also not a bad speaker. I have some older model bookshelves which I like quite a bit (now the Veritas series).

Elites are also a good choice!

The Energies sounded great, they were just spread out super wide on the outside of 4 other pairs, and the room was very short so I couldn't get in the sweet spot.
