Conversation with a visitor last week:

Him: Those speakers sound great! I've never seen in-wall speakers that big. Who makes them?

Me: The gray panels on the wall are acoustic panels. The speakers are the large black things.

Him: I though the black things were some type of cabinet.

    Me: Nope. They are speakers.

Him: (Stands up and goes to the center acoustic panel) If this isn't a speaker, how am I hearing sound from the middle?

Me: (Takes the center acoustic panel off the wall to show that is not a speaker) See? No wires, no nothing. (Takes right speaker grill off) Here are the speaker drivers.

Him: So where is the sound in the middle coming from? (He was then looking down at the center of the equipment cabinet.)

Me: The center sound is an illusion generated by the left and right speaker. It's called "stereo".

Funny stuff...I always get a kick out of non-audiophiles staring oddly at my porcelain speaker cable risers.

Perhaps if they were 'arty' Chinese cloisonne

    http://www.chinahighlights.com/image/travelguide1/culture/cloisonne/9chinese-cloisonne.jpg

They would ask how much you paid and and comment on how great your taste was?

On another note....4K for a rack? You should just hire a carpenter who could produce something fantastic for about half that price. Otherwise I'd just put some tires on it and add an engine and it would be worth more than my current 11 year old Chevy?

This is pretty much what I need. I'm keeping an eye out on craigslist for something similar. The most I want to go is 45" wide. Height doesn't matter.

    8409652_ra.jpg

I went to a "nude oak warehouse" got a bookcase turns out they build it to any size you want and its nice .
the cost is very good , I ordered a 18" deep 40" tall w/3 shelves for like $150
all oak very heavy duty my version was extra cost due to a heavy duty top and bottom (like a base).
All I had to do is finish the wood and build doors , I just bought deft ($5)satin sealent in a rattle can 3 coates came out nice .
All the shelves are adjustable .

    My rack.

It's a sheet of 3/4" birch veneer wood core plywood, seven lengths of 3/4" re oak edge banding, seven 36" lengths of threaded rod, 56 1/2" nuts, 56 1/2" flat washers, 56 neoprene rubber washers and 7 rubber feet, a can of minwax polurethane and a can of minwax golden oak stain. All metal is 4340 stainless. It barely wiggles and will hold up the Earth

Holds up the plasma in the picture as well as a Denon DVD player, Onkyo tuner, Adcom pre-amp, a pair of Silver 7t's, the DVR, a UPS and the Veebeam.

Cost me about $180 in parts and a weekend's worth of time.

Same situation with my buddy a few weeks ago. He was looking at the drywall as if something were hidden behind it. The SDA's have the phantom center speaker effect unlike any speaker I've ever heard, including the Maggies I owned.

Best I can do (no awards for aesthetics... sounds good, though)

    mrhrack061111.jpg

Current configuration includes new to me JE Labs "Simple 2A3" (modified) and Dave Slagle transformer volume control (both DIYs made by AKer Redboy in MN). The Marantz/Clearaudio tt is out of rotation; in its stead is a dump-find :-P Technics SL-Q2 with a Denon DL-103 (the latter from Comet Supply when they were available for $118). Sound is far superior, to my ears, to the expensive Clearaudio Virtuoso Ebony MM cartridge bundled with the Marantz. The Clearaudio arm is just too dang light for the low-compliance Denon.

Even though my "rack" is a cramped corner of a hutch from IKEA, and thus I have nothing to contribute, I am very glad I read this thread. The culmination of the exchange between DK and his guest was the best thing I have read on the Interwebs in months!

I could not find where I found this picture originally but I found the answer to your question. Electronluv speakers. I linked to some more pics. These things look like a transformer in mid transformation to me.
    http://electronluv.com/images/audio/horns/index.html

After looking at the site a little more some of the amps are out of this world looking. If they did not sound good at least you have a work of art. I went to Google and typed in 'electronluv amp' adn then clicked on pictures and there are quite a few that are just frickin' crazy

Thanks for looking for the answer. But I think you got it. It may just be Electronluv designed and custom built by Electronluv or Acapela or using some of their tweeter.
