Powered sub for surround channels?

While perusing the Polk University pages, I came upon what seems to be a rather unorthodox suggestion, at least in terms of how HT systems are configured and marketed today:
There are lots of indicators on these pages that would suggest they haven't been updated in some time, including the sentence preceding the one above:
So, while I doubt many people are currently choosing RTi28s for their new systems, I was wondering if anyone here had tried using a powered sub with their surround channels...?
If you really want to push the performance envelope, add a powered subwoofer to the surround channels!

A very popular choice for surround channel use is the RTi28.

In order to fully understand the goal , one must embark on the full Home theater journey. Learn what the goal is and tell you if using a powered sub for surrounds is the way to go.Dan

I have a 7.3 set-up at the moment, but will be abandoning that as new equipment is coming in...
Using the RM6750 series, I have an AVR doing Bass management sending all sound 80hz and below to an Energy sub via LFE.
Both the center channel and the L/R fronts are wired speaker level to two subs... these two subs are PSW10's. I set the x-over on the backs of each sub to best accommodate a range between 80Hz and up.... with the upper echelon being when the sound from the sub began being directional.
It was cheap quick fix to boost my system... the sub that came with the RM6750 just wasn't doing the job.
Truthfully, the real problem is that the RM6750 system is good but I needed something bigger.
In the end, it worked pretty well. It was a little muddy... but gave the front channels some depth that they were missing....
