I guess a lot of speaker grills... especially the curved ones let dust in on the top. I'm always nervous when I dust off delicate speaker parts!

One thing about grills... they aren't sexy, but they keep little fingers from being tempted!!!!

Haha. Same here for my Rti's in the HT.

In my office, my Monitor 70's are always naked, and my new LSi 9's replacing the M70's will most likely also be naked.

Always on. I tried off, but the wife (cleaning expert) said there is beagle hair and too much pollen in the air- our cars turned green this Spring. Don't need that in my speakers too.

Always off when set up to be played. On and facing the wall when not in the rotation. I dont have a wife and my kid had been around my gear all of her life and knew better when she lived with me( 19 yrs) not to poke the buttons. She did ask a few times what they were so I let her touch them to feel them and that was the end of that.

    On.

But people who have not seen what's behind the grills almost always wonder what kind of speaker layout is hidden so you have to show it of course. Then the grills go back on.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Always on, but only out of paranoia of tripping and having a fork or something flying into a cone.. though really, it's never happened.

Though they do seem to sound a wee bit better with the grills off, and it certainly looks nicer.

You're on the right path. In general, speakers that come with grills are sonically engineered with that in mind. By removing the grills you alter the intended sonics. However, in recent years there has been a trend to use sonically transparent grills, so on or off shouldn't alter the sound.

Another thought on the matter, if you are sitting there staring at the drivers moving, you really aren't listening to the music. Since I always listen with the lights down low or off and with my eyes closed, the grills stay on all the time.

Always on for protection. I feel if I leave them off I'm gonna come home to a damaged speaker. I don't have young kids in the house anymore as my youngest is 13. I have no pets so no damage there. But I still feel unprotected when I take them off.
I do however love taking them off when I'm gonna sit and listen for a while. Movies they are always on.

I clean them off with a 2" soft paint bush .
I guess if a speaker was to bright it may help tame it , M&K used foam pads under 1/2 of the tweeter ( I am not sure why they did that) .

With my HT setup, they're on unless I'm having a "serious" music listening session. The imaging & tweeter dispersion seems better with the thick-framed RT7 grills off. With my computer setup (RT3/PSW10), they're always off for the same reason. The monitors are up on the desk away from danger, and I listen to a lot of music with them.

On currently, I bought cherry RTi12's recently, I like the look other than the silver fronts. Part of me wishes I'd forked out for the RTi A9 in cherry instead, but the price difference was too much.

When I had the stepkids around, definitely on. If your kids have small animals that can get loose you might want to put some kind of grill on the speaker ports too. My stepdaughter's hamster got loose once and decided my subwoofer was an awesome place to build a nest, and stole a bunch of foam from another speaker to make it.

Turned the sub on one day (usually left it off at the time to let kids sleep) and I had a horrible rattle from the sub. Went to look at it and found the hamster running in circles behind the sub and caught it in a towel and deposited it back in it's cage. Didn't think much about it until I got the sub apart and found dog food, shredded foam and other junk packed around the cone and the wires chewed on. I'm sure it got a rude awakening when the first bass note hit.

From then on I kept some wire mesh duct taped to open speaker ports until the stupid animal finally died (of natural causes).
