Driving down the street ..im in my car....

i mean, yeah. I was driving home from Goodwill this morning and took a detour around my neighborhood to see the sights, and came across a house with two of these cars in the front yard. Anyone have any idea what they are? My friends and I were thinking mid 70s Toyota, but we cannot seem to find an exact match on google.

Thanks!

Late 60's Datsuns, 410 or 510's as mentioned above. Strange to see rust in the front 1/4's on that Chevy in Oklahoma, maybe it came from up north?

I just watched an SCCA sanctioned race up here at Summit Point, WV. A whole host of cool grassroots racers in everything from Datsun 510, Porsche 914, Corvette, Z28, Lotus, Subaru to Ford Pintos. You would never make fun of a Pinto again....believe that.

Definitely has the lines for a 71-73' toyota corona. Had a friend with a 71' Datsun 510 so i knew it wasn't it:)

yep, its definitely an early 70's corona as the previous posters have suggested. the angled grill is a dead giveaway. I'll see if I can find a pic confirmation.

Here's Datsun Bluebird, otherwise known as a 410, this is a 64 so it's a little older. I don't think that's a 410 but if it is, that one is probably a 67-71 model which would be the 510 :

    datsun410side64.jpg

    Here's a 510:

    510BluebirdSSS.jpg

But look at the corner markers, the picture is vertical the 510 is horizontal. Also, look at the c-pillar. The angle and shape are off. The 510 is a straight shot to a steep angle at the base of the pillar. The car in the picture has a Hoffmeister kink at the base of the pillar.

    Here's a 70-73 Toyota Corona:

    800px-Toyota-Corona.jpg

A much better fit even if that grille insert doesn't look the same. Has the vertical corner marker as well as the Hoffmeister kink in the c-pillar base. I think it's an early 70's Toyota Corona.

How high res is the original of that picture? You might be able to just zoom in and see what the name badge on the front fender says....

I was going off the top of my head when I answered. It is definitely a Corona looking at the pic John and Newrival posted. The grill through me off.

Had a buddy with a 510 so I knew it wasn't one of them.

Thanks for helping me to learn something new, although I have to say it might be one of the most useless terms I've ever come across!!

It's really only used to describe the feature on a BMW but lacking a specific descriptor, it'll suffice. Unless there is an alternate name and I just don't know it.

Gonna depend on what engine is under the hood. One of those two might be a parts car too.

If it's a 12R, it's going to be a 1.5L or 1.6L I4, over-head valve design (means cam in block actuated by pushrods) and making a miserable 90 HP. Should get fairly good gas mileage for a 40 year old car.

If it's a 6R, it's going to be a 1.7 L I4 with about 107 HP. I think the 6R was fuel injected while the 6R-B was carbureted. Then again, since the 6R was a New Zealand/Australia only engine, it's unlikely to be found in a Corona here.

The other available engine was an 18R. Had two flavors, 18R-E and 18R-B. Both were 2.0L engines. The E was electronically controlled fuel injection. The B was twin SU Carburetors. The E was japan-only but I know examples made it over here. Either that or people were buying the FEI setups from junked Coronas in Asia and shipping them over here to put on the carb'ed Coronas here. Then again, the SU setup probably wasn't that much of a slouch. The numbers I found for the E say it made about 110-120 horsepower and the B was around 95-110.

If it has an 18R, I doubt you're going to get it out of his hands 'cause he obviously has a clue what he has if there are two parked there. If it's a 12R or 6R, it's not going to be much fun unless you do an engine swap with, say, an 18R-G which would drop right in since it's teh same as an 18R-B dimensionally or, one of these:

    800px-First_Generation_4A-GE.jpg
    That's a 4A-GE by the way.

Up to 140 HP in stock trim but there are hop up parts galore for it and it's a very easy cylinder head to work on for port work. I've seen 200+ horsepower N/A in race trim out of those little beasts and well north of 300 with a turbocharger.

The later model is the 4A-GE which has 20 valves and Toyota's VVT technology. (non i though) Depending on what version, they make about 145-160 horsepower.

You could also do a 4A-GZE out of an MR2. You don't have to do anything to the engine to throw a turbocharger on there and turn up the wick.

It seems to have been adopted by other makers, too, to denote a higher-end model... whodathunk?

Evidently, it helps make a car seem like it's worth an extra $5K or so... Check this out:

Camry and IS250 are not the same chassis.

Lexus ES series is the gussied up Camry

    800px-Lexus_ES_350_Royal_Ruby_Red_Metallic.jpg

    Doesn't really have a kink.

But compared to the Camry, it does have a truncated window with a slight kink.

If you're going to do that then forget the Nissan and go with the power king of Japan, the Toyota 2JZ-GTE TT I6 from a Supra. I've seen those engines lay down over 700 horses to the wheels with next to no engine work. I know of more than a few that are well over 1,000 horsepower pushing full bodied 3500 pound Supras deep in to the 9's on slicks.

He isn't. The 2JZ-GTE is a legend. Way overbuilt and easy to boost like he said.

Here is one that took a built up Ford GT in a drag, both supposedly have 1000HP.
