I guess you just filled it with premium gas.

I almost bought a 2002 740IL a few years ago. I wanted one with low mileage but could not find one. Then the price of gas went up. I already had a large car with a V8 so I kept my olds Aurora. It's still garaged to this day.SRT For Life; SDA Forever!

Are there cars out there that don't need Premium? I can't seem to find one. My last 4 cars have all required 91 octane min. SVT Contour, V6 Passat, MazdaSpeed3, now my Benz C350. All the other cars I've considered also need premium. Lexus GS430, BMW 540i, Infiniti G35 and M45, Benz E55, G8 GT, CTS-V, etc.

My Mom had this 2001 model and it was a lemon. That being said, she has a 2009 740IL and it is awesome.

There are plenty of non-boring cars that don't require premium (and pretty much every boring car doesn't). But, in general, anything with a turbo or a high compression engine is going to need (or at least run best with) higher octane. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
My Lincoln and Ranger take 87. The Lightning won't run right on less than 92 and not at all on less than 91. BUT! It'll run like a scalded dog on 108!Expert Moron Extraordinaire

2009 model would be the 750iL bro not the 740 model. Still a wicked car man. I have an E65 7 series and will agree it is awesome. I have mine on a nice set of 22" wheels.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Given your list of cars, I'm sure that's true, but you're also probably a lot better off financially than me
Off the top of my head, for "fun" cars that are more than likely 87 octane, a Mini Cooper, Mazda Miata, that type of car. Even a BMW 3-series is going to run fine on "regular."
But I know this debate can get passionate and crazy and is very subjective. When I was buying my car I was really leaning towards the WRX (instaed of the Outback Sport I ended up with) but just couldn't justify all the extra cost associated with the turbo (mostly having to put premium in it).If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

Bob,
Sorry to tell you, but all three cars you listed (Miata, BMW 3-series, and Mini) have minimum octane requirements of 91. They may run on 87 octane, but they will using severely retarded timing and produce significantly less power than specified.
The only car I've seen in recent years that would excite my pulse and get away with 87 octane would be the current model V6 Mustang. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

Eh, it's not that bad. If I still had the Mustang I had put together, I'd be screwed. It barely ran right on 94 octane from Sunoco (Ultra 94). I'd usually search out the Sunocos that had the "purple pump" for the 100 octane stuff. But, Sunoco doesn't make Ultra 94 or Ultra 100 anymore. It's gotta be specially ordered and it's not certified for D.O.T. legal use anymore so race tracks only. Sunoco only sells 93 or less now. On 93 or less, thee Mustang would stumble and pop and sometimes stall. I used to buy octane booster by the case for it. It'd swallow 3 bottles per fill-up just to get it to a reasonable idle. I had to use the over-the-counter junk from the car parts store otherwise it'd never have passed emissions.
At the race track, I ran VP's MS109 with a synthetic octane booster that bumped it up to 112 octane. Ran like a top on that stuff!Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Looking good Lightman. Get you some Zaino wax and you'll see that paint go to a liquid like finish after your buddy does his thing with it. For the wheels, put some Coke in a spray bottle, spray them down then wash them. It will eat all the dust, and give them a nice shine. BMW brake pads are great but suck a$$ for brake dust, I'd recommend Akebono pads if it bothers you. I got so sick of cleaning my wheels on my 7 I changed them to Akebono and now zero dust.

I highly NOT recommend Akebono. The comfort level of that series is a given, enjoy.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

What's your beef with Akebono? They are a favorite over at my Benz forum as well. Low dust and almost as much initial bite as stock pads. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

Just not a fan based on personal experience. I prefer OEM, Hawk or EBC depending on need and application.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -

Frig that! With wheels like that, I'd recommend shields for brake dust........unless you're one of those people that enjoys gaping at rotors & calipers.

My experiences with Akeboner has been poor as well. Only pad I ever had on the Lightning that literally broke off in chunks. Hawk on the Lightning ever since. Had EBC pads and rotors on my Thunderbird. 2 ton pig would stop on a dime and make change. Also used EBC brakes with Wilwood calipers on the race cars. Did a great job of bringing them down from 170+ MPH.Expert Moron Extraordinaire
