Long term HT Plan, opinions and advice needed

So I am attempting to think long term here about the gear in what I call my obtainable "dream" home theater and figure out purchases in advance for budgeting purposes. This is kinda my 3 year plan lol. Currently I have LSi 15s w an LSiC center for my front and Infinity Primus 162s for my rear. Everything is powered by a Carver AV-705x 5 channel amp connected to a Integra DTR 5.9 via SignalCable Analog 2s.
In thinking long term I wanted to ask a couple questions from folks regarding the LSi series. Keep in mind I am not talking about the *new* LSis since to be honest I wont be able to afford those anytime soon and I am ok with that. If I happen to get lucky and have some fall into my lap then I wont complain thought . I have listed things in the order I plan to address them.
1. The Obvious: Modify xovers on the 15s and LSiC I own
2. Amplification: Obviously my little Carver would be starving for air with any full LSi setup so I am thinking about going w/ a Carver Grand Cinema amp. That would give me something like 450 wpc @ 4 ohm for all 5 channels I currently have. I am open to other suggestions under 1k so feel free to list some alternatives and please be specific (i.e. give me model numbers not just "Parasound" ect). Please note I am not interested in suggestions of amps that are used for Pro setups like behringer, ONLY amps made for Home Theater use. Thanks!
3. Fronts: If given the option should I go with 15s or 25s for my fronts? I have heard the 25s bass is a bit sloppy even w the xover mod. Also has anyone found a drop in replacement for the stock 10, like the db840 for the 15? Should I go w the 15s and then drop in the db840 like I have in my current setup?
4. Side surrounds: I am debating running 15s as my side surrounds for the added bass they give but wanted to know what folks though of that idea over running something like the FXs or the smaller bookshelves
5. Pre or AVR: My Integra works great and wont be replaced anytime soon as I need to get my amplification under control and besides getting more HDMIs or a better EQ I have all I need from it currently. Am thinking about something like the Marantz AV7005 pre or even one of the ICE Pioneer units so I can run the rear surrounds in a 7.1 setup off of it?.
6. Rear surrounds: When/If that happens should I go with LSi 7s 9s or FXs, or even 15s. I believe for rear surrounds in a 7.1 setup you want to go with direct speakers rather than bi-pole dipole but I could be wrong. These will probably be the last thing I do since I am very limited to 5.1 right now and may never even go 7.1.
So please feel free to give me your input, thoughts, suggestions ect. In addition I have no plans to change my wires (IC or speaker) unless I fall into a massive deal on some MIT Shotguns or the like. So assume I will keep running my SignalCable Analog 2's for my IC's and keep using my Audioquest wire for my front 3 and the dreaded Monoprice for my rears.

Amp idea - Parasound 2205
Rear surround idea - OWM3 or 5 so you can mount on wall
Side Surround idea - LsiFX so you can mount on wall
AVR idea - Pioneer SC series
Cable idea - I think cables do matter a bunch for the front 3 speakers, but I wouldnt worry about Monoprice for the rears. -
1. Mod the crossovers first and foremost, it's the greatest bang-for-your-buck upgrade you can make IMO.
2. I run an AVR and that's sufficient for my 12x14x8 room, so I don't have a good answer for you.
3. Use the 15 for fronts, not the 25s, especially if you're getting a good 5-ch amplifier.
4. I think you'd be surprised at how much bass the FXs can really put out. They're pretty shwing as a side surround.
5. I'm not well versed with the pres, but I can tell you that I'm EXTREMELY happy with my SC-37. It powered 7 LSis without a single problem, but keep in mind that I had them crossed at 100Hz, and in a bedroom, and not a larger room. It would be worthwhile to note that the SC-37 or any similar high-powered AVR in combination with a 3-channel amp for the front (or 5 channel and bi-amp the L/R) would most likely be sufficient.
6. For your rears, I'd go with either 7s or 9s. Not that there's anything wrong with the FX, but I think it plays best positioned 15-45 degrees back from directly to your left/right (I hope that makes sense). The front drivers on the FX are very "active" whereas the rear drivers are a great bit quieter, so it helps to have them rearwards a little instead of directly to the sides. My room didn't allow for that, so I went ahead and added the LSi7s to help put more surround information directly behind me. Keep in mind that the 7s have keyholes to mount them directly on a wall, and are small/light enough for doing a mounting system on the wall.
Your cabling is probably fine for now. I've got Monster XP on my front 3 and Monster XP-CI for my rears, and it works pretty good for me, but I do plan on stepping up when I get the LSiMs. x2 on kev's comment about cables- Computer Rig -

Amp idea - Parasound 2205
Not sure how I feel about that amp. I realize spec's arent everything but its 300 wpc @ 4 ohm v. the Grand Cinema's 450 wpc. The Grand also has the ability to bi-amp in a way I havent seen in most if not all other amps.....1. Mod the crossovers first and foremost, it's the greatest bang-for-your-buck upgrade you can make IMO.
That was #1 for a reason of course hehe3. Use the 15 for fronts, not the 25s, especially if you're getting a good 5-ch amplifier.
4. I think you'd be surprised at how much bass the FXs can really put out. They're pretty shwing as a side surround.
Yeah I am kinda back and forth on the Fx's. I just know from a THX perspective they want lots of big woofers around and while the 8" in the 15's doesnt truly count it digs deep enough for me if I get a decent sub to fill in the very very low end. However surrounds normally dont get a ton of deep stuff so I might be paying for speaker I dont need w/ the 15's.....
Regarding fronts that kinda what I thought but wanted to make sure it was the general concencus as well...5. I'm not well versed with the pres, but I can tell you that I'm EXTREMELY happy with my SC-37. Yeah, right now I have them in a pretty decent sized area (16x14 and open to a 12x9 dining room) and I have the 15's crossed over at 60 and the LSiC @ 80.
I was also thinking depending on setup of going bi-amped w/ the Grand Cinema due to how you can wire it to do so but who knows.6. For your rears, I'd go with either 7s or 9s. Not that there's anything wrong with the FX, but I think it plays best positioned 15-45 degrees back from directly to your left/right (I hope that makes sense). Yeah 7's were probably what I would go with for rears due to ease of mounting, cost and size in thinking further on it...... I had thought I read that dipoles werent recommended for rear surrounds but again I could be wrong.
Please keep the discussion and comments coming....."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
I've heard less-than-stellar comments about the OWMs, so I'd stick to LSis, or even the in-wall or in-ceiling equivilents, if you have the ability for that option. I'm not too familiar with your room so that's up to you to decide.

1. Obviously mod the X-overs. Great return on the investment
2. You should be able to score an Adcom 5503 for $400 or $350. It's 350 wpc at 4 ohm. Use a receiver to drive the surrounds (it won't break a sweat). Going from 300 wpc (Parasound) to 450 watts (Carver) is only a 1.5 db gain. Not enough if there is a 2X plus cost difference... Money better spent elsewhere.
3. LSi 15's on the front (since you already have them).
4. Play a movie and pull the plug on your front 3 speakers. Listen to what and how much material is coming through the surrounds. I think that will help you make a decision. Move one of your 15's in place of your Primus. Hear what it is like.
5. I would look at an Onkyo or Denon AVR for both the surround channel amplification and the latest in Audyssey room correction.
6. Dipole will be room placement (the ability to place them properly) dependent. -

Right now I am renting so in-walls are not an option. Even when I move into a house not thinking I want in walls at all. I was going to stick with all LSi's or even drop into the RTi bi-pole dipole speakers maybe....What subwoofer do you have? or if not, what subwoofer do you have in mind?
LOL, as stated renting a townhome and currently own a PSW125 which I do not like at all. Eventually its going to either get sold or paired with my 2 channel rig upstairs. For the HT the plan is to step up to either: 2 SVS PC-12NSD, SVS PC-12+, Epik Empire, or 2 Epik Legends (they all cost about the same)....but only once we get a house, until then its money better spent on better speakers I can actually use...."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." My reciever that I have now wont run 4 ohm speakers so it would make a difference until I replace the Integra with something that can run 4 ohm as I wouldnt be able to run surrounds. I realize the difference in db wont be that much, but having the extra headroom cant be bad.....4. Play a movie and pull the plug on your front 3 speakers. Yeah I might do that at some point as its a pretty good idea. I just like the idea of having a side surrounds with the ability to really dig deep if needed (for things like multichannel music which I enjoy from time to time).5. I would look at an Onkyo or Denon AVR for both the surround channel amplification and the latest in Audyssey room correction.
Yeah, I just hate how the Onkyo's look lol, and wasnt the biggest fan of my Denon 1610. I really like Marantz gear and hopefully when time comes to actually buy a new AVR (in prob 2 years or more) they will have one with Audyssey XT32 as right now they just have XT...6. Dipole will be room placement (the ability to place them properly) dependent.
True, which is why I keep being kinda on the fence on them as I would prefer to purchase something that will work in just about all applications for a surround...."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Any decent receiver (especially in the price range you most likely will be looking at) will handle 4 ohms for the surrounds. You are not going to saturate the PSU of the receiver powering surrounds.

Now that is the way to approach things: No immediate deadline. I had picked up an HK 3600. Suffice it to say I wasn't quite happy with it. I started looking and 3 months from the time I started I found a Denon 4803Ci at BB for $420 out the door. Keep in mind this receiver was $1699 when it was released. Just keep an eye out and you will find a killer receiver that you can't pass up. -

Well right now the only reasons the Integra would need upgrading are for 3D, and I dont give a crap about that, and something better than Audyssey 2EQ, which I do care about, but its not worth the cost just for that, especially when I have other things I need more, like more POWWAAAAAA and upgraded xovers."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." You'll be surprised at how much more you like your system as is, with only the crossovers upgraded, especially once they're broken in. Seeing as you've read my review of the 703s, I'll remind you where I was talking about how they couldn't hang with the depth of my modded 25s. Granted, I'm still unsure if they were broken-in or not, but either way the 25s beasted on them in that area, and I was only upgrading with intermediate parts (Sonicaps/Mills/Daytons). Switching up to Duelunds, Mundorfs, ClarityCaps, etc will yield an even better result, but also come at an added cost. I venture to say that an LSi with those could easily hang with or better the LSiM, so keep that in mind when it's upgrade time.

True, but I would hope the 703's wouldnt best the 25's considering the 25's have a powered woofer whereas the 703's dont.
Now if you said the modded 25's bested the 705's or even the 707's (which is doubtful given the comments I have seen already) that would be intriguing"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." 707s eat 25s for breakfast. 'nuff said.
Now, the 705s vs hotrodded 15s would be interesting to hear. I'd pay for admission to that show.
What I'd fight to the death to hear though, is 707s with external XOs using Duelund CAST resistors, Clarity Cap MRs (and whatever caps necessary for the larger values), and some sick-nasty air-core inductors. I'd be willing to bet those speakers would slaughter anything under 50k.- Computer Rig -

Thats what I thought lol, but I wont be ponying up 2k per speaker for em anytime soon lol.... will be happy once they actually get into full production so they drive the prices of the LSi's I might be able to afford down lol....Now, the 705s vs hotrodded 15s would be interesting to hear. Im not trying to step on anyones toes, because i understand that this is a polk forum...but if it was me, I would get a set of the Kef Q series speakers. We have them in our showroom and they are unbeleivable. They are priced somewhere inbetween the rti and lsi series of speakers. They have bookshelves that you could use as a rears or they also make a dipole.
Have you given any thought to what type of projector or screen to use. Depending on the application the black diamond by screen inovation is the best on the market (in my opinion) I would love to have one but they are expensive so i am going with a carada screen because my room is light controled.
Again, i am not trying to step on anyone's toes i have the polk rti line and actually really like them, but I couldnt beleive the difference i heard with the kef Q series.Harman kardon signature 2.1 amp

There are only a few recievers capable of driving a 4ohm load on the mains, much less doing it on the surround channels.
'shadow... you are thinking correct about the amp choice. You heard what the Sunfire is capable of on the LSi's already, and it is a great match. I think a regular Cinema Grand 225/5 or the seven channel version would do just fine. Just make certain the reciever you settle on has pre-outs for the external power and you will be good to go.

Please, before new gear, investigate bass/high/mid frequency trapping. You can never have enough bass trapping, but the mids and highs can be overtreated so be frugal in those frequencies.

Just make certain the receiver you settle on has pre-outs for the external power and you will be good to go.
Yeah the Integra has em obviously and the next AVR or pre I get will be required to have them lol. Really wanting a Marantz as the wife loves the way they look so that would help me "sell" it to her
I am thinking of just going w/ the 5 channel as I dont know if I will ever go 7 channel and if I do, I would rather buy another amp at that point, or just run the rear surrounds off the AVR and use 8 ohm speakers...
Dont wanna buy 2 amp channels it will be years before I would use, if ever.nooshinjohn wrote: »I loved the 15's as rears, with the big SDA's up front, it was a potent combination.
Yes, yes it was. I wish we had watched a full movie on that setup at some crazy volumes when we were there to truly appreciate it lol...."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Why not look at getting some SDA's up front? With the right amp, you will have an awesome combination ht/stereo rigThe Gear... Please, before new gear, investigate bass/high/mid frequency trapping. You can never have enough bass trapping, but the mids and highs can be overtreated so be frugal in those frequencies.
Been down the road your about to travel and just wished somebody (and the internet was around) had recommended at least looking into this part of the package.

Well right now Nooshin has some acoustic panels I need to pick up. And since WAF factor plays a very important role, there isnt a bunch I can do.
I have my sub on a Auralex isolator, have the LSi's spiked and once I get those panels installed behind the LSi's there isnt much I can do.
Check this thread for pics of the furniture layout. What you will notice is that the room is open on one side, and the window on the other is at the first reflection point. Its got curtains, but anything more wont work. The ceiling isnt high enough to think about installing anything on it, not to mention I rent.
So basically there isnt a bunch I can do besides possibly elevate my sub up a couple feet which is a BIG WAF no no"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Both can be answered with two words: WAF Factor
@Nooshin: If you really need to unload your SDA's I will happily take them off your hand free of charge and even come cart them away for you
@Sherardp: Check the thread I linked to above and you will see my layout isnt the most condusive for a PJ and the main thing is the WAF factor.
Basically here's the deal. The wife and I agree on 1 Major thing. When we get a house it will have a basement and it will be my HT room to do with as I want.
So I am focusing on getting the audio gear portion of the future HT now so when it happens I can focus on acoustic's and video once I get the room"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted."
