i considered a used AV Receiver but not sure if they will accept a Toslink input ... and of course find a unit with a 2 channel pre out .....
how I long for the days of simplicity & TV's with RCA outs ...lol
Tony
Nearly every AV receiver that has Dolby Digital/DTS processing will have optical input. That should be just about anything from from the last 10 years.
It is a bit more tricky finding one with preouts though. Most will have 5.1 preouts. You would just use the Front R/L and set the receiver up to be in stereo mode with large full range speakers in the front. The receiver will then down-mix the 5.1 mix to 2-channel and output through the preouts.
One might think that the Tape output would work, but most digital AV receivers will not convert digital signals to analog for the tape out.For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

So I could connect my Quad Stereo amp mains, to the Front L & R RCA's on a multi channel pre/ processor ... ?

Yeah, but a 10-12 year old mid-fi receiver would probably be cheaper than a pre-pro. Find an old Denon 28xx series or similar quality. Might be able to find one used on CL for $100 or less. People are dropping the old receivers like flys to get newer ones that can do HDMI, HD audio decoding, and 3D.For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
I just purchased the Outlaw Audio 950 pre/proc on polk classifieds ...

it also has a bypass for analogue ..... once I get it all figured out I will let you know ..
I am curious to try this out,
my Panasonic st30 series has the ability to use SD cards
I tried a 720p .mkv file via the sd card and it played the movie in hi res and it was fantastic, clear and detailed picture ....
so with that in mind i will try to add the toslink out audio to the new preamp/proc and see what I get ...
who knew? ...lol
I am an infant with all this updated technology

That should work nicely. The output from the TV will either be Dolby Digital, or PCM audio. The Outlaw can handle either one and downmix it to 2-ch for your system. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...
