Speaker Calibration w/ S&V Disc
Can anyone confirm whether calibration using the S&V disc requires 75 dB or 85 dB test tones, or if it really matters? I thought it was 75, but thought I saw a much earlier thread stating 85.
I believe the disk states anything over 70, but I'm not sure.

I received this response to an e-mail I sent to Ovation Software (the makers of S&Vs Tune-Up disc):
"The tones on S&V are just like Avia. Now, if you set with our tones
using Avia and 85 and then play back Video Essentials at 75, they should be the same. VE encodes the tones at -10 dB, we encode at 0 dB. This is why we are 85 dB and VE is 75 dB.
S&V also contains DTS test tones.
If you compare DD to DTS, DTS will be 4dB louder. This is because our disc is encoded -4dB on DD. This is called Dialog Normalization and it is set to -27. (-31 is 0 offset.) This is done because the majority of DVD movies are also encoded at -27."
Hope this helps.Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support
group for that. It's called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar.

Thanks jgido,
I calibrate to DTS 6.1 on the S&V disk, but it'd be a pretty neat feature on an AVR to be able to calibrate for both DD and DTS, and then just switch between the two (instead of either recalibrating or writing down and changing the numbers for one or the other) when needed.Mains: polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired)

Just saw another post by Doc on using 85 dB for the S&V disc to calibrate for Reference Level purposes.Mains: polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired)

I just received the S&V disc. The instruction on the S&V DVD itself said to calibrate it at 70dB. That's what I did. The disc must be giving erroneous info.

I thought there was conflicting info, hence my question. I calibrated to 85 dB, anyway. Thanks for checking!Mains: polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired)
